Is Nicollette Sheridan leaving Desperate Housewives?

Desperate HousewivesOne of the ongoing rumors about Desperate Housewives is that one of the ladies will be leaving the show at the end of the season. It's a rumor we actually heard almost every year. However, it's been growing lately, especially in light of the big twist set to happen at the end of the two-hour season finale and of recent cast interviews in which we learned that no one is safe.

Of course, it's pretty much a given that the four main characters (Bree, Susan, Gaby, Lynette) will be returning next season. Word on the street is that Katherine will also be coming back since fans have been responding positively to her addition. With that info in hand, fingers were pointed at one housewife: Edie, played by Nicollette Sheridan.

I've read many Desperate Housewives articles lately about the big twist and next season and, in some, Sheridan said that she was worried that Edie would not come back for the show's fifth season. The fact that Edie is a minor regular character, that she is not set to appear in the season finale, and that the big twist could change Wisteria Lane more than the twister did doesn't help her case.

If the rumor is true, it will not be Edie leaving the show permanently. Entertainment Weekly reveals that Edie will be returning next season for "several appearances." This choice of word is interesting. Could it be that Edie will become a recurring character, meaning that Sheridan will not be billed as a regular anymore? If so is the case, it will not make a big difference since Edie hasn't been seen that much this season. Maybe Edie will leave Wisteria Lane and will only be seen in flashbacks. Who knows?

And if the rumor that one housewife is leaving turns out to be true, can Marc Cherry have Gaby and Carlos move away?

The DH two-hour season finale will air on May 18 on ABC.
