Many people think that the term "cougar," which is loosely defined as "older woman on the prowl for younger men to date" was introduced on last season's How I Met Your Mother episode that had Jane Seymour seduce Neil Patrick Harris' Barney. But like I said in my review back then, I had heard that term before that episode aired. But we can definitely say that HIMYM popularized the term. Now it seems like TV Land, which is becoming the network for reality shows starring people over 35, has decided to pick up a Bachelorette-esque series where a number of young men will be competing for the affections of "sexy and accomplished mature woman." The show is being produced by Mike Fleiss, who was the executive producer for the network's version of High School Reunion.
This is the second time cougars have tried to find love on TV. Remember Age of Love, that was on NBC last summer? In that show, a younger guy was trying to pick between someone from a group of young women and a group of older women. This time, the cougar is the one doing the picking, and the men are the ones competing. The show has yet to be cast, but if the cougar looks anything like Seymour, I bet the competition will be fierce (actually, I'd love to see a Christine Lathi lookalike, but that's just me).

I guess this can only mean that "MILF Island" will soon be on some networks' schedule.

Completely inappropriate for TVLand. They should stick to what they do best....CLASSIC TV. All these reality shows do not belong on the channel (NOR do movies). TVLand is nothing like is used to be or like it SHOULD be any longer.

I don't understand why TV Land has to even be obsessed with ratings. They show old TV! There's always going to be an audience for them, and they should stick to that mission. Viacom really needs a good kick in the groin for trying to turn it into "MTV (in the reality TV sense) for old people".
Anyone who actually watched that "High School Reunion" should be ashamed of themselves, because that gave them the green light to make more crap like this. Good job people!
Thank goodness for RTN and MeTV (broadcast equivalents of TV Land), which actually show classic shows and have no need for ratings at all.

You lost me on the first paragraph. Is that some kind of inside joke? I don't watch HIMYM, but I looked at the review from 2006 and didn't see anyone question the term. I only saw you nearly bragging that you knew about the word before the show used it much like you do in this post. Whenever HIMYM is mentioned on TVSquad, the uncertainty of the show's future is brought up. Are we really supposed to believe a show that few people watch is responsible for the popularity of a word that has been used in the real world for much longer and has even been featured on shows like the Today Show and Oprah? Honestly, if older women(not exactly underground trendsetters) have a term for themselves, it's going to be pretty mainstream. Can somebody explain what I missed?
