Def Leppard and the pros

(S06E14) Going into tonight's Dancing With The Stars results show, fans had one question on their minds. Would Cristián continue to dance after his injury, or would he withdraw from the competition? Naturally we had to wait until the very end of the show to have that question answered. The ballroom kids were replaced by Kenny Mayne and Def Leppard--definitely an adults' night.

Our hosts started things off with a recap. Marissa was bouncing off the walls after she received nines for her tango, and was glad that she put her sexuality on the line for the rumba. Cristián took issue with Carrie Ann's criticism; his sweat spoke for his energy level. Everyone was worried about his injury during the Latin round. Kristi rolled with the punches after her waltz took some hits. She admitted the difficulty of pleasing all three judges after her hip-hop cha cha earned her an eight. Mario said that his foxtrot was his worst dance, and praised the band for making his mambo fun. Shannon made a second apology for last week's remarks. She added that her fake hair worked well with her bionic bum. Edyta called Jason her superhero after their quickstep earned some tens. Jason dedicated his paso doble to Cristián.

Jason and Edyta's quickstep got the encore this week. Len's paperwork was spared this time around. Afterward, we got a look at the overall leaderboard. Cristián was in sixth place, with Mario and Shannon tied for fourth. Marissa and Tony landed in third place. For the first time ever, Kristi was in second place; Jason and Edyta took the lead. I was beginning to think Kristi would keep the top spot going into the final weeks of competition. Way to go, Jason and Edyta!

When Len began his comments about the lift rule, I was sure we were in for another judges' lecture. Imagine my surprise when he announced that each couple was allowed to do one lift next week! The only condition was that the lift had to be consistent with the character of the dance. I didn't see that coming at all. In the first phase of elimination, Kristi and Mark were put on the safe list.

DanceCenter is back! I've been waiting weeks for this. Kenny Mayne, Jerry Rice, and Len sounded off on Shannon, Mario, and Cristián. Kenny took shots at Mario's good looks, Derek and Shannon's chemistry, and Len's advanced age. Classic DanceCenter at its best.

Musical guests Def Leppard performed "Pour Some Sugar On Me." Pros Tony, Karina, Mark, Anna, Louis, and Cheryl accompanied them. It's hard not to like this song, and the pros' routine made it even better. They wore black leather costumes to show that they meant business. Backstage, Kristi said it was only a matter of time before she lost the lead. Jason thanked Kristi for letting him have the spotlight for a week.

The second segment of DanceCenter took aim at Kristi, Marissa, and Jason. Kenny called Jason out for re-using moves in his routines. Jerry revealed his crush on Kristi with a flirtatious wink. I couldn't stop laughing when they teased Tony about his super-white teeth and Marissa for her speed talking.

The second elimination stage put Mario and Karina on the safe list. Def Leppard performed their new single, "Nine Lives." They were joined by U.S. National Rhythm champions Jose DeCamps and Joanna Zacharewicz. Do any dance professionals have names that are easy to spell? Where's Jonathan Roberts when you need him? Samantha's attempt at a hard rock introduction for Def Leppard was hilarious.

Before the final elimination announcement, we got a 24 style walk-through of the contestants' week. Conclusion: it's hard to learn two dances in six days. Cristián finally explained what happened with his arm and his intentions for the remainder of the show. He had a ruptured tendon in his bicep and would need surgery to repair it. After getting an MRI the doctor decided that they could delay the surgery. Cristián wanted to continue competing if the voters wanted to keep him around. This sounds like a dangerous risk to me. I'm a fan of Cristián and Cheryl, but he could aggravate his injury by pushing himself too hard. They were immediately put on the safe list, as were Jason and Edyta. This left Shannon, Derek, Marissa, and Tony in the bottom two. Finally, Shannon and Derek were sent home.

I'm wondering if this was part of the backlash after last week's interview. Shannon went out of her way to apologize several times, but was it enough? Did Cristián get an influx of sympathy votes from concerned fans? Shannon took the loss gracefully and said that she had a lifelong friend in Derek. I was way off with my predictions this week, but I don't mind a bit. That's what makes the show exciting.

Next week, Brett will review the final five couples' performances and the show's 100th episode. In the meantime, check out AOL's extensive Dancing With The Stars coverage, which includes photo galleries, polls, and a live chat.

Why were Shannon and Derek sent home?
