(S07E35) Hey look, another mentor that's a solid hundred years older than every single contestant. But Neil Diamond's still a cool cat so I forgive him. Oh and what do you know? Neil has an album, Home Before Dark, coming out next week. I'm sure that's just a coincidence. He really did the show because he enjoys it and truly wants to help the contestants. Not to promote an album. That Neil he's a swell guy. Why don't you drop by tonight and chat us up about it in our live chat?
You can join the chat by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.
Well, it was inevitably coming but I have to say that I'm disappointed that in the week in which the contestants start singing two songs a piece, they had to pull both from Neil Diamond's catalog. This was an opportunity for the contestants to finally sing something without a theme behind it and give us an idea of what kind of singer and performer they see themselves as. Since we were robbed of that in the rounds up to the Top 12, I thought we'd get one Neil Diamond song and one contestant's choice. But no, it's Neil Diamond and Neil Diamond. To speed things up, the contestants ...
Jason Castro
"Forever in Blue Jeans"
For his first song, Jason started out way too restrained for the first few lines but quickly settled into his mellow groove. Neil Diamond's music is a good fit for the folksy intonations Jason uses in his performances. All in all, he did a nice job on this one.
Judges: The judges gave a quick run-down of the first round's performances at once. Randy said this was better than last week but still just okay. Paula enjoyed his lower register and then reviewed his second song which he hadn't performed yet. She later explained this off as saying she thought he'd performed twice already, and then that she was reading David Cook's notes. What the hell was that? Simon came right out and said he didn't like any of them. His one word review for Jason: forgettable.
"September Morn"
So, did the contestants listen to Simon and up the ante for their second song of the night? Well, the audience did their cool arm waving thing; can't Simon tell them to knock that off? Jason again missed an opportunity to take his performance to the next level as we know he's capable of. When he stood I thought he might find that magical place, but other than the fact that he was standing, there was no change in what he gave us. Ultimately it was a pretty dull and lackluster night for Jason. Somebody should have warned him that when you sing first you really need to do it well.
Judges: Again, it was just okay for Randy. Paula agreed with me that both performances were safe and in his comfort zone. Simon said that the Jason they initially put into the competition appears to be gone, as he did nothing to the songs to make them his own or make the performances special at all.
David Cook
"I'm Alive"
David, like Jason, brought his own guitar to the jam, only his was electric. Everyone has settled quite comfortably into their musical niche and David brought a rock vibe to this number. I wasn't blown away by the vocals he presented here but, at the same time, there aren't any specific complaints I can make about what he did. I guess I could just call it a very safe performance whereby he didn't challenge himself at all.
Judges: Randy felt he was grooving in his zone. Paula never recovered from reviewing both of Jason's songs before he'd sung the second. Simon's two word review: above average.
"All I Really Need is You"
David went acoustic guitar on his second number. He gave us a little more vocally, and I enjoyed the intimacy of his performance. Then, as is usual with David, he rocked the song out a bit toward the middle. His voice was on pitch throughout and he treated us to a wide range of voice throughout, from tender to falsetto to raw, with that edge of rock. All in all, head and shoulders above his first song.
Judges: Again, Randy said he rocked the house and that he was a huge fan. Paula was proud of him and felt she was already looking at the American Idol. Simon said the first song was okay but the second was brilliant. He actually made the song feel like it was written this year, modifying the arrangement to make it sound current and relevant.
Brooke White
"I'm a Believer"
Brooke joined the guitar brigade at the start of the show, taking on a song that quite honestly rocked out a little more than she does. If the judges were commenting I think they'd say that she should be grateful she has a second song to come. And for some reason, the expressions she was making throughout came across as comically earnest rather than sincere. Man, I like Brooke, but if this is what she has to offer tonight she may be singing one of these again tomorrow night in farewell.
Judges: Brooke, too, was better than last week per Randy, but still a little karaoke. Paula was out of her gourd and didn't review Brooke here. Simon's one word review: nightmare.
"I Am I Said"
Brooke seated herself behind the piano for this number. Some of her best performances have come behind the comfort of the ivory keys so maybe she'd find herself again here. She tweaked the lyrics to speak about her own experiences, living in LA away from her Arizona home. Maybe doing so made the song speak to her in a very real way because her performance of it spoke to me. This was the Brooke that has wowed us in prior weeks and eluded us these past few. I'd say that performance spells trouble for Mr. Castro.
Judges: Randy told her that that Neil Diamond song is one of the tougher ones to sing, but nice job. Paula liked the piece for her vulnerability and the connection she made with the audience. Simon reiterated that he hated the first song but confirmed that this was the Brooke they liked. It was a million times better than the first song, if still not incredible.
David Archuleta
"Sweet Caroline"
It must be a night for rocky starts, because it took David a few words to find his own groove vocally. He found it quicker than Castro managed, but again I didn't think he really did anything that challenged him. Maybe Neil's songs don't lend themselves to amazing performances, because there hadn't been one to this point on the night yet.
Judges: Randy simply said that David was "da bomb!" Paula was probably thinking about his performance in the finals. Simon's one word review: amateurish
"America"
Is it just me or does the emotional vibe that you get off of David the same for every song no matter what he sings? He's got an impressive voice and is truly an amazing singer for his age, but I seem to get more that he's trying to showcase his singing prowess rather than sell the story or message of the songs that he sings. You can commence slamming me in the comments now.
Judges: Randy said he was in the zone with another good performance. It was a perfect song choice for Paula. Just as Simon credited Kristy for singing "God Bless the USA," he credited David with another clever and smart song choice to appeal to his audience, guaranteeing his place in the Top 4. Does he think Americans are so easy to manipulate? Are we?
Syesha Mercado
"Hello Again"
I think Syesha was Neil's favorite as he had nothing but nice things to say about her command of his music and he wanted to hug her. Or maybe he just thinks she's hot. I'd certainly hug her. Syesha put a little bit more into her opening performance than any of the other four finalists. There was a sincerity to her expressions and the way she emoted the lyrics. Maybe she just connected with the story of the song in a way the others didn't. After the first round of songs, Syesha stood as the strongest on the night.
Judges: Randy thought it was strong but not amazing. Paula was restrained and given Valium. Simon's one word review: old-fashioned.
"Thank the Lord for the Night Time"
Syesha was just adorable with the attitude she gave the opening of this number. She was clearly having a blast singing this number. I think Syesha may have made the smartest song selections on the night. She followed up her opener with this up-beat number to showcase her diversity. And, of course, her power and range was on display again here. She's definitely got one of the strongest voices left in the competition. But does she have the support?
Judges: Randy thinks she's finally realizing who she is, and he likes her in the genre and style of this number. Paula loved the vulnerable texture of her first song, and appreciated the theatrical showcase that this second piece gave us. For Simon, she demonstrated that she's a very good actress/singer, but nevertheless thinks she may be in trouble tonight. He didn't think she had a really memorable second song like some of the others. Maybe Simon said that to try and save her; you know how those psychological games of his garner sympathy votes.
Best of the Night
Syesha (both songs), David Cook and Brooke White (second songs only)
The Bottom Two
Jason Castro and Brooke White (should be, but I worry about Syesha)
Going Home
Jason Castro (at this point it's almost impossible to say for certain as I have no idea what America's voting for anymore, but Jason has consistently shown he's falling behind the pack, and Brooke's second number should be enough to buy her at least one more week)

Dude, how do you trash Neil? They guy has written more hit songs than anyone in history...songs that you like that you don't even realize were written by Neil. These contestants would be lucky to even come close to giving a Neil-type performance. Poor form man, poor form.

Since I don't really feel like going over each song in depth, I will just review each singer. Is it me or do Paula and Randy really need to go? Simon is the only one who really says anything relevant, as Paula is clearly not all there and Randy simply has no credibility because he doesn't seem to actually listen to the performances at all anymore. If we had three Simon type judges, you know, honest people who actually try to give a true critique, this show might actually have some credibility.
Also, Neil Diamond is clearly an amazing performer, because I loved him in concert (was forced to go by my family, I was NOT a fan of his music) and these Idols were simply terrible in comparison. Neil Diamond sings with true conviction and has a gorgeous voice and it really showed last night that he is a special kind of performer because these Top 5 singers couldn't hold a candle to the mentor.
Jason Castro
"Forever in Blue Jeans", "September Morn"
Both of these songs were kinda "eh". Maybe the Idol people wouldn't let him do "Red, Red Wine", but if they did and he chose not to, it was a huge mistake. He just did his forgettable thing instead of his memorable thing that he's done 3 or 4 times. And at this stage in the competition, it's a dangerous thing to do. I just think that Syesha or Brooke are in more danger than he is, and David Archuleta deserves to be, but Jason needs to come through next week with a showstopper to make it to the top-3.
David Cook
"I'm Alive", "All I Really Need is You"
Honestly, I thought that David Cook could take a Neil Diamond song, rock it out a bit and kill it. I was wrong. I completely forgot both performances before the end of Brooke White's and that's not normal for Mr. Cook. That being said, he was still the 2nd best last night.
Brooke White
"I'm a Believer", "I Am I Said"
Wow, that first song was terrible, and the second was mediocre, yet I have a sinking feeling that Miss "Oops, can I start over?" will be safe yet again. When she started singing the first song I turned to my girlfriend and said "She sounds like Kristy Lee Cook." She then started to sound even worse. She was flat on basically every note throughout both performances and her lack of range was apparent on the difficult "I am, I Said" and I just don't see a reason why she should stay anymore. They gave her a third chance after last week and she didn't do anything to prove she belonged.
David Archuleta
"Sweet Caroline", "America"
So did David get first choice of songs this week? It seems like he did considering the fact that he got the two most recognizable songs in the Diamond songbook. His first performance was so painful that I was clapping because he finally had another trainwreck bad enough to get a negative comment from Randy...guess not. "Da Bomb" must be a dud, cause if that was "Da Bomb", would the original be "Da Supanova"? At least Simon was honest. Then he sang "America" and it was even worse. Listen to the Diamond version then this one. It's like David Archuleta is one of those performers in Disney's Toon Town at Disneyland that only those under age 12 can possibly enjoy.
Syesha Mercado
"Hello Again", "Thank the Lord for the Night Time"
Is it me or did Syesha seem to hold everything back until she felt she had a chance to be kicked out? I feel like she was trying not to impress people too much earlier so she wouldn't disappoint later on, and now she's going all out. This week she made a smart choice by singing one slower song and one fun one. They gave her the prime closing spot and she made it work for her. The last song was really cute and fun and I enjoyed watching her on stage. That being said, Syesha is destined for Broadway, not a recording career.
I hope Brooke goes away because while Jason hasn't been consistent from week to week, he hasn't screwed up royally and has always been on key...which is more than I can say for the FLAT (pitchwise) Brooke.

Watching Paula struggle with commenting on the first round of songs made this whole night worth it. What a trainwreck.
Once again, Simon is the only intellectually honest person up there. He trashed all 5 first songs, rightfully so.
Can we skip to David v. David in the finale, please? The rest of this is uninteresting to me. Bye bye Brooke, bye bye Syesha, and bye bye Pothead; I don't care in what order.

I think Paul was right, David Cook is the next American Idol. David. A always gives a stellar performance, but he feels a bit too young and too everything. I wouldn't want to see him in a concert, but David Cook? when and where is the venue, I want to see him! Jason doesn't seem like a pothead like someone before me commented. Just because of his hairstyle choice, doesn't make him a pothead. He sings at his church! I'm very tired of Sayesha. She is just a little too haughty for me.

I'm a Neil Diamond fan, but I didn't think any of the performers captured the songs in a really good way. Syesha was the closest to doing any of these songs justice.
Jason: terrible performances both times, but he'll probably skate through because of his fan base.
David C: first song was bad, second song was a lot better. I agree with Paula, he should be the next American Idol.
Brooke: I really didn't like her performance of "I'm A Believer." Too downbeat for me, but it certainly wasn't a nightmare. Loved the second song, especially how she changed up the lyrics. This is the Brooke I first enjoyed hearing.
David A: I hated his take on "Sweet Caroline." This song needs to be rousing and David was too laid back. Carly Smithson said she planned to sing this song and I would have loved to hear her take. "America" was better, but still he sang it too low key for my taste. Doesn't really matter, he's destined for the top 2.
Syesha: I really think this was Syesha's night. Her song choices were perfect for her voice and she really seemed to be having a good time. I didn't think the second song was as strog as the first and I don't think the 'tweens will be able to relate to either of the songs. Even worse this song had the Lord in it, will Conservative American turn against her!?
By the way, the two-song format was a bad idea; it was just too rushed. Also, did someone forget to give Paula one of her pills?

LET'S BE HONEST...Archuletta seems like a nice kid, and he seems genuine. He has a nice voice too. BUT...he's not marketable. He has no personality, he's not particularly good looking, he doesn't seem all that smart...WHO is going to pay $$$ to go to a David Archuletta Concert? I can't think of anyone in their right mind that would dole out cash on this kid. No offense to him, but AI needs David Cook to win.

umm...jimmy...you obviously have no clue what sells musically in this country. dude... win or lose Archuletta will have a platinum cd by christmas '08 because every 'tweener in the country will want a copy, even if its crap. this show is not/has never been about good music. its about sellable music and sellable performers. that's call marketability. and if u don't think this guy is marketable to young girls and/or the mothers/grandmothers who buy for them you are dead wrong.

That's because he's not a good singer, he's mediocre at best. His voice is decent, but so is every lead in every high school drama program in America. Where's his originality? Where's his stage presence? HOW DOES ANYONE LIKE HIS NASAL SINGING? It is beyond me that ANYONE could like him.

Nobody is saying he has a bad voice. He just sings everything pretty much the same. He's selling his voice, not the song, just as Jason mentioned in his critique. His fan base will most likely consist of 12 year old girls and the parent or grandparent who buys for them.

This is the 1st time I have commented on this site. I love Jason's comments, although not always right.
PAULA is the one that needs to go home, especially after she referred to Syesha as Brooke, and tried to comment on JC's 2 song's after he only sang 1.
David C reintroduced me to songs I have previously heard by Neil Diamond, but made them his own. They will do better then when Neil recorded them himself.
Jason should be going home tonight after those terrible performances.
For those who comment about the voting, This is "American Idol", not "Judge's Idol". The "Judge's idol" will end up with the better recording contract, but they are seeing who America chooses, or it would not be a profitable show.

Neil-Fan here, and I know all the songs that were performed, so lets go one-by-one:
Jason: "Forever in Blue Jeans"-right song choice for him, but he couldn't pull it off. He doesn't have the voice for a Neil-song.
"September Morn"-another good choice, but he doesn't have Neil's baratone voice, and he didn't do anything to change the song to fit his style.
David C.: "I'm Alive"-Fantastic choice for him, a Neil-song that is not well-known but very popular among his biggest fans. Cook did Neil proud.
"All I Really Need is You"-another song that's not well known, but Cook performed it extremely well. He was the best of the night.
Brooke: "I'm a Believer"-Contrary to Simon's opinion, I thought she did a nice job with this song. It's meant to be an up-tempo, fun song, and Brooke stayed true to that concept.
"I Am, I Said"-I was worried how she would do with this one. This is Neil's signature song, it's autobiographical, and I've always thought no one should sing it but him. However, Brook changed it up enough to make it work for her, and she showed some real emotion, so nice job by her.
David A.: "Sweet Caroline"-Great song for the A.I. Crowd, a tune that gets you on you feet and singing along, but David is sooo laid back that he didn't give the song any life. This one was a dud.
"America"-Better move for him, picking this song. He changed it up a little, rearranged the verses, and seemed to get into it. Clearly his best performance of the night.
Syesha: "Hello Again"-This was a good song for her, and she got the emotion out of it that it deserves. However, she really just sang it like Neil sings it, she didn't put her signature on this one, so it was just okay.
"Thank the Lord for the Night Time"-This was her best song and she performed it well. She got into it, gave it more of a gospel-beat, and make it work.
Safe: David C.,
Bottom 3: Syesha, Jason, and Brooke...UNLESS the viewers realize that David A. was not on his game tonight and show that they have some objectivity...but that's doubtful.
Out: Jason (sorry dude, but it wasn't happening for you tonight. luckly, after you smoke a few, you won't even remember you were on the show in the first place)

I have been trying to get through to David Castro's number and all I get is how to get to a chat line between adults. I now know that this show is not on the up and up. The producers already know who they want to be the American Idol. I'm sorry about David Cook's brother but he stinks as a singer and is getting by because of symphony. If David Castro is voted off I will call the FCC about this show........................

Mary, chill. You probably called using 1-800 rather than 1-866. I did that once a few years ago and some adult business came on the line. Note that they tell you maybe 20 times during the show that it's not a 1-800 number. If "Jason" makes it to next week (not likely), you can vote all you want to with the 1-866 number.

Who the heck is David Castro? And why would David Cook get by on "symphony"? Is he in an orchestra? Not sure you even know yourself what you are talking about, maybe you got hold of one of Paula's pills. Anyway, David Cook is the best singer and best performer, and no one else should win American Idol.
