Roger Friedman is reporting that the rumors of Jimmy Fallon replacing Conan O'Brien as host of NBC's Late Night are true, and that NBC will make the announcement next month (as you know, Conan is leaving to take over for Jay Leno next year, so his 12:35 gig is now open).
There are two reasons why I think this story might be wrong. One, it's Roger Friedman, and scientific studies have shown that he's wrong 9.2 times out of 10. Second, Friedman says that NBC will make the announcement at their upfronts in May. Well, the network already made their fall annoucements a few weeks ago.
But it could still happen. Maybe NBC will make the announcement when they make some other announcement about their schedules (a smaller presentation could take place the same week the other networks have their major upfronts). This rumor has been floating around for quite some time (even pushed by Fallon himself once, on Howard Stern's radio show), so we'll have to wait and see what happens. NBC seems to like Fallon; he filled in for Letterman a while back, and I'm sure NBC wants to make an announcement way ahead of time so there are no controversies.
Update: Looks like it's true. NBC might announce it soon.

NBC wrote the textbook on smooth transitions with Brokaw/Williams. Only problem is Leno doesn't want to go!
And let me get things rolling by saying what an overrated unfunny tool this guy is. Thanks!

Well, he would be better than Carson Daly, but that's not saying much.

an hour of a fish in a fish bowl on a desk would be a better alternative then jimmy fallon. at least the the fish won't crack up and laugh during the live skits between guests.

If it keeps Carson Daily in the 1:30 slot where no one can watch him I'm happy.

Chevy Chase can finally relax. There will be a worse talk show host than him.

I love Jimmy. Although at first it seems like a strange mix, Jimmy and Late Night, I definitely can see it working. His problem has always been that he was just too goofy, too unserious as a performer on SNL. He sure can't wreck a talk show with laughing in the middle, so maybe it'll work out perfectly.

Oh God no! Kimmel, Conan, Carson and now Fallon...yikes!
SNL actors are cursed on tv shows such as Dennis Miller who attempted two talk shows or Chevy Chase with his failed attempt. And then there was Dana Carvey's zany show on ABC which failed. All I am saying is that it has been proven to be a problem. I'm far from thrilled and I used to be a big SNL fan from 1987 till 2002.
Fallon should stick to doing movies like Will Ferrel.
