Dating rumors are a major part of the hype surrounding Dancing With The Stars. Every season, a different pair is suspected of being a couple behind-the-scenes as well. Some of the rumors turn out to be true, and some do not. Partners Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff started dating after they were paired up on the show.
This season, fans have been speculating about the chemistry between Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough. Rumors have been circulating all week after People caught them kissing on the beach. Hough and Elizabeth even poked fun at the rumors after this week's romantic rumba. Is their relationship the real deal, or is it all for the fans' benefit?
On this week's performance episode, co-host Samantha Harris tried to ask if they were in a relationship, or if it was just a "show-mance." Does all of this speculation help the couple earn more votes? Derek and Shannon have been getting way more exposure than the other DWTS couples. Ryan Seacrest has been trying to get to the bottom of things on his radio show, and shows like Entertainment Tonight have also been discussing the rumors.
I'm not more inclined to vote for Shannon and Derek because of the speculation, but it does give fans something to talk about. What's your take on this?

I could care less if they are or aren't, but watching it with friends we noticed that in some of the behind the scenes type clips (the confessionals and the group dance practice) he calls her "babe" and "honey" a couple times. Doesn't sound platonic to me...

I doubt there's anything going on ... it's just a ploy. I do think, though, that the pros seem to be "touchy feely" types. You see that with Mark B. and how he hugs Kristi, so I'm sure Derek is the same way ... except he uses words as well as hugs.
I also think the confessionals that are broadcast on TV are edited to make people *think* there's something going on, even if there isn't .

I totally agree with Karen. I think their close relationship is what caused Derek to flip out about last week's scores and be critical of the judges' ratings for other couples in spite of "error" like lifts, etc. If they are dating, it certainly shouldn't influence voting. If they dance well, they deserve good marks; if they don't dance well, they deserve lower marks.

To me is just a publicity stunt, clearly they are friends, but the way both try to implied someting else without saying it is just to heat the discution (see?? it work, we are commenting the news:), plus i think that kristin do santos or ausiello (don't remember who), sad that derek was in a relationship and that the rest was just a showmance, so that settle the question for me anyway.
Plus, and maybe im way off but, wasn't shannon married???, did she divorced o she never was married???

I think it is GREAT if they are together....they make a perfect couple..I love them both and they are my favorite...I hope they win..I watch it every week just to see them...and forsure it is NOT for the votes...they work hard together..god works in funny ways..I hope he keeps blessing them....Donna

I find these supposed romances each season so tedious. I don't care, and Samantha is more ridiculous than usual when she talks about it with these two. It makes me less likely to vote for them since it is so obviously done just for publicity and they play coy about it. I think it is a complete bore and can't stand when the show hypes these romance and sickness "dramas".
