The LA Times ran a piece yesterday stating that American Idol's ratings are down for the first time in its seven-year run, with a 7% lag this season. Hmm, seven years and a 7% lag-- does that mean the show's viewers are showing signs of a seven-year itch? The Times story reported that shows typically show signs of a crack in the ratings veneer between seasons five and seven, which means that it is probably really smart for shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica to determine their own ending dates, well before their ratings start to drop. Granted, a 7% decrease is not really anything to write home about. Simon, Paula, and Randy don't have to start paddling quite yet.
But does the drop in ratings have any larger meaning for television in general? Are viewers becoming tired of reality TV in general, or Idol specifically? Executive Producer Ken Warwick blames the ratings drop on recent contestants and their song choices, rather than anything inherently Idol. Other insiders don't think viewers are going to leave Idol to watch other shows; they suspect that viewers are simply finding alternatives to television in general, which may be fallout from the recent strike-- and may be temporary.
Whatever the ultimate outcome, it's going to be awhile before the fat lady sings.

Maybe America is slowly coming to its senses and realizing that this Gong Show knock-off is crap and doesn't really need to fill the schedule the way it does.
Sadly, I think this is just a temporary thing and AI will rebound...

I HATE the effect American Idol has had on network Television. A seeming endless parade of great shows cancelled in the wake of the AI ratings juggernaut. I can understand why it’s on television, just not why it’s the ridiculous success it is here and around the world (guess I'm just missing something).
Never-the-less - I will be thrilled when American Idol is just another show and not the show killing bully it is.

Does this mean you finally can drop American Idol as the only show with it's own category on your website navigation?

All network TV of the last year has really taken a decline in ratings. It didnt start when the the strike started, and clearly the strike didnt help. You have to take into account the other so many ways to watch the same TV show and the fact that in springtime there's always a drop because of newfound good weather.
But there's a good question out there: Is this drop and other shows' drops temporary? I don't think it is. I think the bar for what good ratings is, is being lowered overtime because ratings just are not as high as they used to be.

I do enjoy wacthing American Idol, but was disappointed in the show America gives back,
There is so much poverty in the US that I think the money donated should be given to our citizens not third world countries.

They're doing both. Plus we really need to stop the "us vs. them." We all live in the same planet.

The exec producer blamed the contestants, but thinks nothing is inherently wrong with Idol? WTF? How can he separate the two?
I blame both. It seems like most of the top contestants this season all have previous experience. There aren't any Carrie Underwood type stories this year. She was the waitress who had never even been on a plane before. Now, that's a story that the audience can get behind.
Instead we have Carly Smithson -- the failed recording artist who already had a record deal.
The producers need to ban contestants with a certain level of professional experience. Will they lose some quality singers? Probably. But, the audience needs to connect with a great story and not just a polished professional.

They gave us better contestants (more professional) because tv types (this blog included) whined and complained about the focus being on the train wrecks and said they wanted better singers.
Only it isn't true. We don't want boring better singers, we want the train wrecks and the sob stories and the other stuff that makes it interesting.
So I think it is a combination of the contestants being boring, it is spring and there is more to do and people are ticked off at tv because shows get cancelled and then there was the strike. It is easier to watch reality than get invested in a series that will likely be cancelled anyway.

Hopefully the low ratings mean that it will not return next season and they can put House, MD back on Tuesday nights!

Well my personal experience, I have been flip flopping between Idol and whatever else is on just to see when David Cook and Brooke White sing; once I see them two sing I watch something else. Same goes for the results show, they should only have 15 minutes for that, just enough for the featured singer/coach to perform and then announce the one that gets voted off. Heck they should just randomly stick the "results show" somewhere in between a regular FOX show to get more viewers.

a producer complaining about the song choices is patently ridiculous. It's the producers who pick the themes and mentors. What sort of songs are going to be picked on Mariah Carey week or Andrew Lloyd Webber week? And everyone knows that the contestants are given restricted song lists -- the fact that Idol made such a big deal over finally being able to use the Lennon/McCartney songbook just reinforces that.
I would love to see unknown songs getting spotlighted by the show, but the producers understand that they want the focus on the singers, not the songs. The reason you enforce singing the same old songs is so that everyone knows the song. David Cook just emphasized that. The general public did not know the song he sang on "Inspirational Night," so it was difficult for people to judge how well he sang it.

I love American Idol just the way it is and look forward each time the season gets started. I do think there should be a way to limit how many times a person can vote. America seems to be voting on looks, not so much as, who is the best singer. This is clearly coming from the younger generation who is judging with their eyes and not their ears. Maybe Idol should exclude America from voting and replace it with a more extensive panel of judges to include past, present top artist and producers.
I was disapointed when Christy was voted off, I thought she had really stepped it up and is extremely talented, much more so than Brooke. David A. is a good singer but stays within a safe range of slow songs. The one time he did try to step it up, he didn't do so well. I believe David Cook has it all. I don't think he has a cocky attitude what so ever. I believe him to be very sincere. It is clear that he has the most talent.
Huge Fan of Idol

first of all...a few select kick-ass contestants that got voted off shouldn't have been... and the same with a few select contestants that are still there..shouldn't be there and the theme of the week needs to be not so boring and who the hell knows these songs...for ordinary people these songs suck...

i am a huge fan of AI...i do think it is discrimination on the age.... if you are over 28...you cant even audition... AI should give everyone a chance... at least try it once to see that there are excellent singers over the age of 28.. also they need to have a country night or country idol with no limit on age...they may just be surprised...

I don't watch it anymore since Michael Johns got voted off. It is clearly a contest based on popularity instead of talent. I think that Daughtry & Aiken both proved they have more talent than the winners in their season. I was certain that it would come down to Carly, Michael & David Cook. They are the three most talented & now 2 of them are gone. Hats off to Carly & Michael. Now you guys can go out show them just how talented you are.
