(S07E33) It's really coming down to it now. There's only six contestants left and we get back-to-back mentors. Following on the heels of Mariah Carey is Andrew Lloyd Webber. Don't know the name? He's the mastermind behind such Broadway classics as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. So now Simon has an excuse to say everyone sounds like they're in some Broadway musical production rather than a pop-star. We're going to keep liveblogging these bad boys, tonight's starting just before 8:00pm ET.
You can join the chat by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.
When Ryan came out on stage he was encompassed by a live orchestra right there on the stage with him. As it turns out, at least for tonight's show, Ricky Minor and the band have been joined by a full orchestra to flesh out the music of tonight's theme and celebrity mentor, Andrew Lloyd Webber. I'm not ashamed to admit that I love musical theater, and Webber's had a hand in some of the most important musicals of the modern era. For Webber, it's all about the words and the story that the songs tell, so that was his focus in working with the contestants.
Syesha Mercado - "One Rock and Roll Too Many," Starlight Express
Webber thought she had a chance to bring the house down with a fun and sassy performance, which would be a stark contrast with the string of ballads she's been hitting us with the past many weeks. It's disappointing that she started ahead of the music, but the band recovered and she was able to get into the piece. Of course, Syesha got stuck with the dreaded first is worst performance slot so will people remember that enough to vote for her by the end of the night. Her vocals were solid enough but there were parts in the middle where she lost the performance side of it and on her way into her final line she nailed a note that was a bit flat. Overall, this was a good move by Syesha to showcase a diversity and a not-Whitney/Mariah side to her. And it didn't hurt at all that she wore that incredibly hot little red dress to spice up her look.
Judges: Randy said that she gave her best performance to date and could be a huge Broadway star. Paula said she's real good at this, which she dubbed her "happy place." For Simon, it was a sexy performance and one of her strongest performances thus far in the competition. She showed tons of personality and she is definitely well-suited to the style.
Jason Castro - "Memory," Cats
Well, he's still clearly uncomfortable with interviews, but at least came across as goofily charming when he admitted he'd never seen any of Webber's work. Webber was surprised at the choice and told him he'd really need to let himself go to achieve something wonderful. But then admitted on camera that it might go better for Jason if he ignored everything Webber said and just ran with it. The song's tone and mood is perfectly suited for Jason's mellow vocal style. He looked nice all decked in white and perched on his stool, but I worried about his lower register as he didn't seem to emote when singing down there in nearly the way he can at his upper reaches. Luckily, the majority of the song melted right into the Castro-Zone and he came across very, very well with it.
Judges: Vocally, Randy compared it to a train-wreck but liked the visual of Castro singing it. He felt it had too much melody for Jason. Paula said it was a wise song choice that further identified his uniqueness as an artist. She liked it to Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful." It felt to Simon like the longest two minutes of his life and said it came over as a young guy being forced to sing a song he didn't want to. So apparently the judges didn't like it as much as I did at all. Could Jason be in trouble then?
Brooke White - "You Must Love Me," Evita
Webber wanted to make sure that Brooke knew the story of the song. Once she knew the story, Webber got behind her performance and the emotion of it. He called her a natural actress. For the second time this season, Brooke blew the beginning of a song, but this time she stopped the whole band took a beat and started again. Which makes that maybe the second time in seven seasons we've seen a contestant start over like that. I'm not sure how to take it, in all honesty. I love the reports that the mosh pit kids are recruited and told to wave their hands like they did through this number because they looked like idiots. As for Brooke, once she got into the number I really thought she did a good job with it. She strained her limited vocal range but did manage to sell the story of the song, especially in her ending. Reportedly, the standing ovations are mandatory as well.
Judges: Randy liked that she took guidance from Webber and believed what she was singing. But the vocals were a little tough. Paula nailed her for starting and stopping saying she must never do that. She liked that she didn't overact, but Paula really struggled with to say this critique. Simon said because of her flub, she was strained and struggling throughout the performance and ultimately gave a disappointing performance. On questioning, Simon agreed with her decision to stop and start the number, which should help it sit better with the voting public. One thing that comes from Brooke screwing up like that is that she's quite while the judges' critique.
David Archuleta - "Think of Me," The Phantom of the Opera
Again, a song tailored to a female performer, Webber had no idea about how David would approach it. Webber enjoyed the way it was arranged but felt that David needed to work on keeping his eyes open so he can connect better with the audience. David felt right at home in this song and his vocal working of it was masterful. I appreciated that you could see him struggling to keep his eyes open throughout his performance, which means he was receptive to the advice given. I think this is one of the strongest performances David's given thus far on the show and definitely the strongest overall performance of the show so far.
Judges: Randy officially declared David Archuleta the one to beat for the night. Paula essentially seconded the notion by saying that what he just did was absolutely perfect. Simon, however, thought it was pleasant but one of his weakest performances. He didn't think it was a memorable performance, but was good enough to get him through to next week.
DOUBLEPLAY
Carly Smithson - "Jesus Christ Superstar," Jesus Christ Superstar
Carly tried to sing "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera, but Webber pushed her into singing her second choice. He said she has a huge barrel chest voice and simply had to go with "Jesus Christ Superstar." So she did. I loved that she came out in a crazy patterned short dress with energy, smiles and a big voice. She managed to turn the number into a good-time rock and roll jam and had a great vocal. I still might have liked to see her voice soar on "All I Ask of You," but she nailed this one, too.
Judges: Randy didn't know that this was her best performance, but it was good and he also liked her outfit. Paula liked how unexpected it was and loved her vocal work in the chorus. For Simon, it got a bit shouty in the middle but still rang in as one of his favorite performances of the night. She then ran and grabbed a shirt that says "SIMON LOVES ME (this week)." That was a very cute move that showed a lot of personality.
David Cook - "Music of the Night," The Phantom of the Opera
This is one of the most passionate songs from The Phantom and generally brings the house down. I love that David isn't vamping this into a rock number but rather relying on his voice to sell it as Webber wrote it. The song has enough of an edge to it that he can keep his rock roots. I've seen this song performed brilliantly and performed very badly and David definitely steered toward the side of amazing. I could hear that performance in the show itself and wouldn't think twice about it. This was an absolutely amazing night for David Cook. And he definitely proved that he's no one-trick pony as he was tender, passionate and brilliant.
Judges: Randy said that was an amazing vocal performance. Paula thought it was fantastic and showed how well-rounded a performer he was. Simon doesn't like that side of David but felt he made the most of what he was given.
DOUBLEPLAY
Best of the Night
The Davids Two
The Bottom Two
Brooke White, Syesha Mercado (if they still do three, we'll throw Jason in there just for fun).
Going Home
Brooke White (Syesha Mercado may get cursed by having gone first, but I think Brooke's time may be up)

First, I love how Andrew Lloyd Weber took this seriously and was honest, brutally so in some cases, with each of the contestants. He gave them all great advice; some succeeded, some didn't.
Syesha: I think this was her best performance in a long time, but I don't know if it will keep her out of the bottom three. She did take Weber's advice and really pulled it off.
Jason: wrong song choice, I think Weber knew it, and if he doesn't end up in the bottom it will be based soley on popularity not talent.
Brooke: going into this night I knew these songs would be a struggle for Brooke. She just doesn't have the voice to pull off Weber's songs. She did herself no good tonight. I really think she'll be the one to go.
David A: unlike Simon, I thought David's take on Think of Me was fantastic, and not the boring choice I thought he would make.
Carly: She totally blew me away -- totally! I can't wait to download this song. Thank you, Andrew Lloyd Weber, for suggesting she sing Superstar.
David C: man, is this guy talented. He totally got Weber's advice and sang this song with passion. I think this was the best performance of the night. Hands down. Simon's comment was just stupid.
Bottom three: Jason, Brooke, and Syesha (the others were just too good).
Leaving: Brooke.

Jason, usually I agree with your comments, but I'm afraid you were way off on last night. perhaps you're not familiar with the professional productions of these shows but as someone who has seen all of them in NY or London, let me reiterate that Jason's performance of Memory was an absolute disaster. his voices was thin, weak and lacked any of the emotion that the song is meant to convey. David A. turned a pretty song into a Disney-esque ballad that could've been on the Lion track soundtrack. on merit, top 3: David Cook -- he amazes me every week and my wife and I eagerly tune in to see what he will do with a song. even signing Phantom straight he was brilliant and has the voice to pull it off. 2. syesha; 3. carly. bottom 3: 1. jason. 2. brooke; 3. David A (although the judges continue to over-praise him and the tweens will I'm afraid vote him all the way through.

I'm from Rockwall TX so I've been rooting for Jason all along but man oh man, did he suck tonight. If Brooke's performance -- complete with forgetting the lyrics -- wasn't so bad, I'd be writing Jason's eulogy right now. Now I figure he might still have a chance to go on to the next round.

THANK YOU PAULA! I cannot believe that Simon and Randy let Brooke get away with her starting-over bit. Do you EVER see a singer/performer stop the orchestra and start over again? Since when has that become acceptable? What if she had forgotten the lyrics in the middle of the song? Would she stop and start over again? I am STUNNED that Randy and Simon said it was OK, and they would have done the same...It is NEVER OK to stop and start over again...yes, they may be nervous...but these contestants are in a competition to get record deals and give concerts...is she going to do the same thing in a concert? I swear I was going to throw the remote at the TV.
I almost always wholeheartedly agree with whatever comments Simon has, they always make sense. But this time? C'mon!
Just typing about this makes me mad....I still cannot believe they let Brooke get away with this...I'm hoping that all the blogs and websites and reviews and stuff will make a BIG DEAL out of this, because it is.
You can NEVER stop an orchestra and start again...you just can't...

Get over it, PinkLady.
She did what was right for HER.
It was at the beginning, same as earlier this season when she started and stopped at the piano.
She said she lost the lyric. To me it looked as tho the emotion of the song got to her and caused her to go blank.
BTW, forgetting the lyric is not uncommon. We don't see it happen often cuz of the retakes. But it does happen during live performances, especially from cover singers.
Had she flubbed in the middle, she would have gone on, just as David A. did earlier this season, tho her flub would have been obvious. But it makes sense to stop right at the beginning and try again, and Paula was the one who was wrong.
Your reality check is in the mail, dear.

When Andrew Lloyd Weber said Brooke was a natural actress, I had to wonder if he saw what I think I see in her...nothing but a big fake. She acts sweet and kind-hearted, and pouts up her bottom lip, like she's just so touched by everything that is said. But something about that chic leads me to believe she is a B----. I thought it was hilarious when Carly got called to the bottom 2, and as she headed to the stools where Syesha was seated, she laughingly yelled out, "But i knew all the lyrics!"-definitely a sarcastic remark thrown Brooke's way. You can see that the other girls have bonded with each other, but Brooke just fakes her way in. At this point, I even hope Jason makes it longer than Brooke

That's a misconception on the part of a lot of ppl, that David A. is boring.
It isn't that he is boring---he ISN'T---but rather that the ppl who think he is boring are actually Neanderthals.
Like YOU.

Both David A and Jason are 'one trick ponies' - meaning (for you neanderthal joe) they can only sing in one style. Both are in my bottom 3, along with Brooke.

Joe, are you kidding me? He's boring because he only sings one thing mediocre (and everything else terrible) and that is the boring ballad that plays on Adult Contemporary radio. How is not liking some stupid kid being a neanderthal? And he's not even that good otherwise, his voice is nasal and his range is not all that big. I'll admit that he wasn't the worst last night (Brooke was, if she stays on, this show really has no purpose as a competition), but come on man, name one successful artist under the age of 50 who sings nothing but ballads! I bet you think Michael Bolton's "When a Man Loves a Woman" is better than Percy Sledge's too...

I actually thought Syesha was brilliant. I really liked her in the beginning of the season and eventually totally lost interest in her. Tonight she reminded me why I was initially so fond of her performances.
Whew, after that performance I thought to myself "tough act to follow," and of COURSE it was Jason to go after her. This is NOT his musical style and I think any song he would have picked wouldn't have come across well. If he gets sent home, it will be unfair because he would never be doing a show or concert singing with this type of musical style.

Loved Syesha! This is her niche and she wowed. She should have a great career on Broadway.
Best of the night was David C. Though he didn't give me chills, his enunciation was perfect, his pitch sweet and the rock note at the end just great.
Surprise was Carly. Loved it and her. She properly rocked out and, for the first time ever, looked like she was actually having fun on stage.
Just an aside, Jason, if you read these comments. It's Andrew Lloyd Webber, two 'bs', and he did more than have a hand in those musicals...he bloody wrote the music. Sorry, but it's like saying that Lennon had a hand in the Beatles hits...

David Cook was brilliant yet again tonight. It seems like every song that guy sings turns to musical gold (with maybe one exception). and I loved the fact that he had the good sense to not screw with the arrangement this time (except for his little rocker-boy last note).

I agree with both of you guys. I mean, I don't know what show Randy was looking at and hearing tonight, but what I heard and saw was the same old boring-ass David Archuleta. He has no stage presence. And to boot, he didn't listen to Webber and closed his eyes during a portion of that interminably boring song.
I just don't get the hype and hoopla over this kid, who continues to pale in comparison to those who are much better IMO like David C., and yes, Syesha. At least she could hold notes and could sell a song, rather than being a one-trick pony like he is. Every song this kid sings seems like the same. And he does the same with it -- the half dipping with his knees, the lip-licking in between phrasing and the eye-closing. There's no appeal except for those clueless teenyboppers, who, by the way, I don't understand why they were allowed on the stage to hug David A. WTF !! Talk about hype !! The producers were wrong in doing that, giving David A. a step up from the other contestants. They were pandering to that contingent mercilessly tonight. And it stinks !!
Brooke needs to go. She should have left last week, IMO.
I'm so sick of her backtalk and that phony "I'm about to cry" look that she gives week after week when she's getting feedback from the judges. But tonight took the cake !! This is the SECOND time that she stopped at the start of her performance, only to begin again. Why didn't somebody correct that liar when she said that was the first time that she did that. Ryan should have jumped all over that. Do they really expect us fans at home not to remember that blaring faux pas ? Puleeze !! She's gotta go !!
And I don't know what Syesha did to piss them off, but I can't understand why until tonight, she had been getting only lukewarm critiques from those three. I think she has a big voice and is one of the strongest on the show this season. But she keeps getting these half-hearted comments. Poor Syesha. I love her though. And I keep voting for only her. I sure hope she is one of the Final Four, where she belongs.

Time to visit the optometrist, dude. You need new contacts.
At NO time during his performance did David A. EVER shut his eyes. He took Sir Andrew's advice completely. He may have squinted a bit, but his eyes were open and alert. The fact that you thought otherwise proves that you weren't paying attention.
If any contestant on the show this season has been a one-trick pony, it has been Syesha. ALL of her songs have been sung the same---big voice with bone-crushing intensity, even when it wasn't appropriate to the lyric. She thinks she is Whitney or Mariah; she has no variety. Her voice is suited for the stage, but that's about it. There are times when you need to use nuance when you deliver a lyric, but apparently 'nuance' is a word Syesha doesn't know.
Her attitude about her style and song choice mirrors Amanda's. Remember her? The rocker chick? She wouldn't try a ballad cuz she didn't like them? So everything out of her mouth was the same identical hard rock delivery. She had the pipes, and she's a great rocker, but NO VARIETY.
Same with Kristy Lee Cook. Everything had to have that country vibe, proving that she could not sing anything OTHER than country. And cuz of it, she was very predictable and tedious.
So please don't try to invalidate David A's performances by using this lame 'one-trick pony' crapola. Your girl Syesha is guilty of the same thing. Just cuz she has a big voice doesn't make her a winner.

If Brooke should go home because she forgot the lyrics, then shouldn't David A. have gone home during the 2nd Beatles week? I'm just sayin' . . .
