Things are looking good for Ronald D. Moore as Battlestar Galactica wraps up its run on SciFi. Brad already posted about the new show for Fox, Virtuality. Now comes word that the former Star Trek scribe has a new deal with United Artists. It seems Tom Cruise has tasked Moore with creating an original sci-fi trilogy. Feel free to insert your own Scientology joke here.
Details of the trilogy are, quite obviously, scarce at this point. That being said, if you want to go out and make a big budget sci-fi epic, having Tom Cruise on board is a great first step. It means this thing has a solid chance of actually coming to fruition. And while I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, I'm on board to give anything Moore pens a shot.

It is almost a guarantee that Cruise needs Moore more than Moore needs Cruise. You can all the money in the world, but if you don't have good writing, you fail.

Cruise is screwed, that WW2 movie is done and they are just letting it sit. The only reason I can think of is they are waiting until the bad memories are out of people's heads, kind of like what they did with X-Files.
And Moore is great, not only does he know what he is doing, but he doesn't come off as a jackass, and seems like a real nice guy.

Moore is hitching is trailer to the wrong star. Cruise's time in the spotlight is over. I don't think he'll be able to open a movie with anything near the success that he used to. He's primarily known now as that crazy and creepy celebrity with the fake wife who jumps up and down on couches, hates therapists, and is a Scientologist. In other words, one more tabloid "star". And once his Nazi film is out, that'll hurt him even more.
Moore can do much, much better. Especially since Cruise is also known to be a control freak on his movies. Moore will lose every argument and have no say about how his vision translates to the screen.

I would love to see a proper adaptation of Battlefield Earth! The Travolta one was just horrendous ... seems like the only thing taken from the book was some of the character names! A trilogy would be the best way to adapt that book. It is really a pretty good sci-fi story if you can look past the author and give it a read. Same with one of his earliest books, To the Stars.
