Mormons have multiple wives.

Muslims tend to have multiple wives.

And Scientologists have their own personal plays about popular fairy tales - like "Snow White".

If you read the wikipedia article - this thing was already "proven" not to to a damn thing a long time ago.

I would stand by the fact that that Scientology was the only religion created so a guy could get a tax right off. . .

I'm not a scientologist. I think e-meters are bunk. However, what's the point? There are three categories of people when it comes to e-meters: people who believe in them, people who don't believe in them, and people who have never heard of them.

Scientology has gadgets and part of the word "science" in its name, but their beliefs include the supernatural. Some alien soul in volcano thing, if that South Park is to be believed. The scientific method ignores the supernatural. If you believe in an all-powerful God, it might be God's will that makes the apple fall from the tree, and gravity is bunk. Since you can never disprove the supernatural, science just ignores it.

So what scientific value is there in looking at a device that measures... whatever it is that it's supposed to measure? None. You'll be preaching to the choir for people who already don't believe in e-meters, you'll be ignored by those who do believe in them, and otherwise you'll be saying "hey, this thing you've never heard of? it doesn't work." Exciting television.

Anyone with half a brain can easily see why being an athiest and a socialist is the way to go. I mean, they never look down on the beliefs of others, they're quick to forgive and they understand that diversity is a part of life!

They are, in a word, "Hypocrites". They talk about how silly religion is and how intolerant they think religious people are while being worse in those very regards than anyone their ignorant fears have them believe exist. They believe one way and hate anyone who believes differently, but of course *ALL* religious people are like that, not them!

They are ignorant and fear the unknown, exactly like ancient man. I wonder if they, too, live in caves?

I don't begrudge people for their religious beliefs and i'm an athiest. To each his own. But wouldn't it be great to see their faces if they were to Mythbust "god". lol. sorry, i'm not trying to offend, i just had this thought and had to type it out.

I don't know diddly shit about Scientology, but it sounds like they could make it into a pretty good sci-fi show if done right. Nothing inaccurate or mocking or anything, just based on regular happenings of your average Scientologist. It could be interesting.

All this talk about religious persecution is utter nonsense. If science wants to look at the e-meter, it can do so. We are allowed to take a critical eye at ANY claim. This isn't persecution, it's freedom of thought and belief. Persecution is when we tell other people they're not allowed to believe something, which is worlds apart from critical examination. Trying to claim "persecution" as a defence to criticism is, in fact, persecution itself: since you're trying to tell people they're not allowed to form opinions.

Religion often critiques the fundamental tenets of science. They don't seem to feel any shame in doing so. Why should science feel shame when they invoke turnabout as fair play?

Scientology is a religion just like Christianity or any other religion, except you have to pay as you go; there are RTF slave labor camps; Critics are harassed and occasionally "vanished"; members are told their lives are meaningless because they will be reborn; there is absolutely no room given to interpretation; Interfaith association is frowned upon or forbidden; families are broken up; abortions are mandatory to stay in in some cases; "excommunication" for no real reason is common; familial murder; rampant extortion; faulty medical advice is mandatory; the unalterable source text is being altered; government infiltration; attempted coups; extortion and attempts to exert influence on governments; and hundreds of other things.

Other than that, it's virtually identical to any other religion.

you equate the humanity of 5000 years ago to todays, vastly interconnected and increasingly vocal global community. we are not a crowd of club-weilding heathens, nor a stadium full of screaming blood-thirsty romans. we have evolved, some of us, at least, and when we see injustices being perpetrated upon our fellow man, we want to speak up. when a large (tax-exempt, at that) corporation is abusing its employees and harrassing its critics, cowing even youtube and amazon into censorship...something has to be done.

sure, there are "worse" things going on in the world...but if we do our best to stop scientology from gaining the power it so deeply craves, we might be able to avert political/economical/(and even) spiritual disaster.
