Dancing With The Stars: Week 5 results

Dancing With The Stars pros

(S06E10) There wasn't much room for mistakes in last night's performances, and several of the stars needed fan votes to make up for lackluster scores. I panicked after realizing that I forgot to vote on Monday, and wouldn't you know it? One of my early favorites landed in the bottom two. This week's results show brought us performances by James Blunt, Ozomatli, and more of the aspiring Dancing With The Stars Junior Champions.

The evening began with a recap of Monday's routines. Kristi came out of her shell, and believed that her special glance at Len helped her scores. Jason was pleased to have a new nickname, courtesy of Bruno. Marissa had the most fun ever with her performance, and admitted to feeling sexy. Mario was on "Cloud Thirteen" after getting his scores. He promised to weep if he gets a 30. Cristián and Cheryl disagreed with Carrie Ann's remark about the couple's lack of chemistry. Any more chemistry would be illegal, they argued. Marlee was teary-eyed and upset after her low scores. She didn't want to let Fabian down. Shannon was hurt by the judges' comments as well. Priscilla added that the missed turn during her routine was her worst nightmare.

The encore wasn't much of a surprise. Kristi and Mark's rumba got the highest score and the most flattering remarks from the judges. There really wasn't another choice, apart from Jason and Edyta; no other couple came close to achieving that level of success. I hope the remaining contestants up their game next week. Nothing against Kristi and Mark, but I'd like to see other couples turn in encore-worthy performances. I'm worried that nobody can catch up to Kristi at this stage in the competition. The others are improving steadily, but most of them are far from looking like pros.

Backstage, Samantha interviewed two of the lower-scoring ladies, Shannon and Marlee. Shannon thought she did as well as she could have. She's still learning and working on her cardio, but acknowledged that she did make some visible mistakes. I was impressed that she didn't use Derek's illness as an excuse; she certainly could have. It must have been incredibly stressful not knowing who your partner would be until the last minute. Marlee made an odd joke about strangling Samantha if she gets sent home. She got serious after "joking" with the co-host and said that she would leave with pride in what she accomplished. She learned to become a dancer and improved each week.

Ozomatli, a Grammy-winning Latin band, gave us the first musical performance of the night. They were joined by eight of the pros: Derek, Fabian, Jonathan, Louis, Anna, Edyta, Karina, and Kym. The routine was a show-stopper, and was one of the best Results Show performances I've seen this season. I loved the vivid costumes.

Tom gave us a quick reminder of the standings, and went straight to the first phase of the elimination. Surprisingly, they revealed one safe couple and one couple from the bottom two. Kristi and Mark were the first couple to be put on the safe list. Sometimes I wonder if Kristi practices looking nervous in the mirror. She cannot possibly think she's going home. Cristián and Cheryl were given the dreaded red-light treatment; they landed in the bottom two this week. I didn't expect this at all. Cristián's scores put him near the middle of the pack, so he must be hurting in the votes department.

It was time for another set of performances from those darling ballroom kids. Ten-year-old dancers Dmitriy and Michelle did an amazing jive for the judges. In their video introduction, the kids played on the swing set and did some hula-hooping. Dmitriy said that their secret was not to blame one another for poor scores. I'm glad that they showed the couple doing normal, childlike activities. I always worry that little prodigies like Dmitriy and Michelle are overworked. Apart from being phenomenal dancers, they seemed like average ten-year-olds. They danced a charming jive to "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray. Len told Michelle that she looked like Edyta for a minute. Bruno said that the kids didn't appear to be nervous at all. Their kicks were precise, and their showmanship was right on. Carrie Ann called their jive a sassy, energetic routine.

Jaryd and Cara (ten and eight years old, respectively) were next. Cara mentioned that she practices her facial expressions regularly, and Jaryd said that he loves hip-hop dancing. I couldn't get over how tiny Cara was; too cute for words! They performed a cha cha cha to Bruce Channel's "Hey! Baby." The routine was so much fun to watch, and I think those facial exercises paid off. They looked more relaxed than the previous couple. Is it wrong that I was jealous of an eight-year-old's shoes? These two were my favorites, hands-down. Bruno called Jaryd and Cara the cutest little gremlins he'd ever seen. Carrie Ann told Cara that she danced like a pro, an impressive feat at her age. Len complimented their sharp, crisp leg action. In the end, the judges chose Jaryd and Cara to move on to the next round (Carrie Ann was the only judge who chose Dmitriy and Michelle).

Tom dealt with a slight teleprompter malfunction, then introduced a "Show Day" interview package. Some of the guys play football while the ladies are in makeup. Jason's lack of hair gave him the advantage of extra time. Priscilla and Mario do yoga and lift weights to relax. Marlee prefers to spend time with her kids before dancing, and Shannon likes it when Derek serenades her. Naturally, everyone gets tense as showtime approaches.

In a quick round of results, Jason and Edyta were declared safe. James Blunt performed his new single, "Carry You Home," from his album. He was joined by world champions Eric Luna and Georgia Ambarian. Kudos to the pros for proving that you can, in fact, dance to a James Blunt song. Backstage, Samantha talked with Cristián and Cheryl about landing in the bottom two. Cristián graciously called Cheryl the best dancer on the show, and emphasized the importance of challenges in life. He really believed that he was going home this week.

Two more couples were put on the safe list. Marissa and Tony were cleared for another week of dancing, as were Mario and Karina. After the break, Shannon and Marlee got the thumbs up as well. This put Priscilla and Louis in the bottom two with Cristián and Cheryl. Len told Tom that his heart wanted Priscilla to stay, but that his brain was rooting for Cristián. In the end, Priscilla Presley was sent home. She was a good sport about agreeing with the judges' assessment of her performance. Tom pointed out, for some misguided viewers, that Priscilla does not have a psychic hotline. Apparently some fans didn't catch on to the April Fools' joke.

It's always a shame when the icons leave the show. Priscilla brought a lot of elegance and sophistication to her routines, and it was nice to see Louis van Amstel's return this season. Now that a significant chunk of the cast has left, I'm eager to see what the final seven stars bring to the dance floor.

Next week, Brett will be back to review the final seven couples' performances. In the meantime, check out AOL's extensive Dancing With The Stars coverage, which includes photo galleries, polls, and a live chat.

Can anyone give Kristi & Mark a run for their money?
