One of the funniest guys in show business is coming to TV; and not just voices like he's done on The Simpsons. E! News has reported that Albert Brooks will appear in four episodes of Weeds for in the upcoming season. The Showtime comedy returns with new episodes beginning June 16. Albert Brooks -- whose real name is Albert Einstein (and his brother is comic Bob Einstein, aka Super Dave Osborne) -- has been making people laugh for nearly four decades. I distinctly remember his bits on Love, American Style and his hilarious films on Saturday Night Live circa 1975.
Those movies led to features like Real Life, Modern Romance, Lost In America and Defending Your Life, among others. He is the epitome of the word droll. I even liked his last film, which tanked in the box office -- Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World. And he was brilliant as the voice of Marlon in Finding Nemo. It will be fantastic to see what he brings to the already fascinating Weeds, already a smart, funny, idiosyncratic show.
He'll show up as Nancy's (Mary-Louise Parker) father-in-law. As viewers know, it was the unexpected death of Len's son, Judah, that forced Nancy into the line of work she's been pursuing -- dealing marijuana throughout her suburban neighborhood. Of course, now that she's torched her place, the story will be going into a new direction. According to Showtime, in the new season, Nancy and her family will move to the fictional beach town of Ren Mar on the San Diego/Mexico border. They plan to start over, but don't expect them to give up the business. Instead, the new locale opens doors for many new opportunities.

I love "Lost in America", "Defending Your Life", and "Mother". I always wondered whether it's complimentary or not to refer to someone as "funnyman". I can imagine people cringing at that. It's not "comedian" or "comic actor"--"funnyman" sounds kind of condescending or ironic (like "he's supposed to be funny, but look what he's done"). I know that's not your intention, Allison--Brooks is one of those guys that almost every media story calls "funnyman". But I wonder if it grates on him?

I agree! The guy is a legend. "Defending Your Life" was one of the best movies ever, and his work on The Simpsons always makes me smile. Call him legend or comedy legend or don't call him at all. :)

I didn't know Super Dave Osborne and Albert Brooks are brothers. You learn something new every day.

I think the best part about this will be him interacting with Justin Kirk (Andy).

Albert Brooks is da man!
He should be a great addition to the show as long as Nancy & Andy don't touch his nest egg.

I just hope that Season 4 doesn't suck so badly as Season 3 did, with its haphazard plotlines.
Frankly, I don't know what groundbreaking contribution that Albert Brooks will bring to Weeds, but any improvement over last season would be appreciated.
Boy, aren't I a bundle of fun?
