I finally caved. After all the hype and all the buzz, I gave in. I'm sick of avoiding headlines on blogs and it's frustrating to hear everyone chatting away about "Cylons this..." and "Caprica that..." while I stand by mute and clueless. I've finally started to watch Battlestar Galactica.
I should mention that I'm not completely in the dark. I've tried before. On a couple of occasions actually. I've had a burned copy of the three hour mini-series that started it all for some time now. I could never get through it. This time, I went all out though. I even shelled out the $55 for the season one DVD set. Now, I'm through the mini-series and I'm nine episodes into the season. Four to go before the finale and all of a sudden, I've stopped. I started thinking. What if I had watched the show, right from the get-go when it premiered back in 2005 along with everyone else? Let's pretend. Let's say it is 2005 all over again and episode nine just aired last night -- the one where Tigh's estranged wife shows up. Let's pretend that seasons 2, 3 and 4 don't exist yet. Cool premise? OK...
I don't see what the big deal is.
To be completely honest, I'm a little bored. For the most part, the acting is stale and rigid, it's chock full of sci-fi clichés, endless good vs. evil rotes, and I'm really not sure that I care if the humans lose to the Cylons.
To be fair, I suppose I should preface all of this by saying that I've never been a huge sci-fi fan. The genre never really "took off" for me? Get it? That's a rocket ship pun!
Bear with me though and hear what I have to say. Picture the mind-set you were in at this point in 2005 when you only had a few season one eps left. Were you really that enthralled? Were you already anticipating season two? Here's some of what's bugging me...
- The Cylons don't seem all that smart: They keep screwing up! It's a wonder Adama and his people haven't beat them at their own game of cat and mouse. If these things are so good, then why haven't they won? Which leads me to my next point....
- The humans don't seem all that smart either: They're scrambling around just as bad and at times, it's comical. I specifically remember one scene where a bunch of Viper pilots were goofing off around a pile of live rockets and one went off! If we're ever under attack by robots we built, I'd like to think we'd be less careless.
- I don't buy the Cylon technology: Someone want to explain to me how they made those human Cylons? Don't actually explain it to me... I don't want to be spoiled. Again, remember "this is 2005." I'm sure the answers come in a later season. But this is a big one, and some hints now would be nice. I just don't see how they made the jump from "toaster" to full blown human like that. Why aren't there any intermediate models with metal feet, human fingers, and ears all over the place? I assume they made some mistakes perfecting the 12.
- Baltar is a tool: I don't like him. Ignoring that fact that he got duped by Number 6 and unknowingly aided in the attack, he's still a tool. But by virtue of his knowledge and connection to the Cylons, he's a sort of anti-hero that we're forced to root for. I don't like that.
- Now that the whole fleet knows Cylons look human...: There's no way it stays that calm. There's what? Around 40,000 people on the remaining ships at this point? There should be mass panic and widespread rioting. My point is that I don't feel like anyone is afraid or worried. As a result, I don't feel that way either. It should feel frantic. It doesn't.
Now I realize just about everyone is going to rag on me for speaking too soon, before I've watched the rest of the show and caught up. But remember my original point. This is what I would have written back in '05 if I had seen the show then. Something must have really changed, because at this point, I don't see what everyone is so frakking excited about.

Oh, you're toast, Jonathan!
I think the beauty of this show is that the humans are flawed. And so are the Cylons. The good vs. evil storyline gets really murky as the show continues. Do the humans deserve to survive? Do the Cylons?
As for the Cylon technology... I'm afraid you're not going to get much. I don't remember hearing any specifics about it--just that it took a lot of trial and error (and experimentation on humans). All you need to know is "they evolved" and then suspend your disbelief.
But, if the mini-series didn't hook you, maybe this show isn't for you. I was salivating for more at the end of the mini-series when Sharon was revealed as a Cylon.

i agree,
i think what makes this show different and special are:
1) the acting is incredibly awesome, believable, esp for sci fi show! thats saying something!!
2) the analogies they make with real world problems, terrorism, labour unions, class distinctions etc... its amazing, how they get it so right!
3) the line between good and evil is a gray one, and 99% of the people are in that gray line. in times of war, morals take a back seat, and sometimes it has to! for the survival of the race.
4) Baltars story is far more complex than you realise, you have to watch all the episodes so far to get an idea.
he resembles Joseph Smith, who founded the mormon religion, a man who gets instructions from an angel and eventually establishes his own colony, unfortunately dying at the hands of a mob.
this again is an analogy, an insight to HOW religions develop. a seemingly miraculous event here and there, the right group of people who have nothing to lose, and boom, you have a religion. now whether he is insane, or really a prophet remains to be seen.
5) and finally: quality and detail. the sets are meticulously designed, the space battles are awesome, you can tell every single person involved is giving it their all, and probably at some great personal cost too. when the shows actors, writers, producers, crew all believe as much as they do on this show, you have to be blind not to see it.
this is a top notch , high quality show, have an open mind and try season 2. if after that you still feel the same, well then, there's always CSI.....

On behalf of BSG fans everywhere, I will beat them all to the punch: Frak you! So say we all.
To be fair, when I saw this post I thought I'd have something to come in here with and point you to where you are dead wrong. But, honestly, if this is your perception of the show at the point you're at, then I don't see why anyone would be able to change it.
Hell, my wife still mocks me for watching a show that uses a fake curse word ... many, many times per episode. She laughs every time.

If you don't like Si-Fi, don't watch it.
But don't be a prick and start attacking one of the best shows witch has seen the light in ages.
This show is so mutch beter when you reed between the lines. The psychologie about some of the storylines is daring in a post 9/11 era.
Few dare to go where this show goes all out.
So stop crying and go watch some "I love Lucy" wanabee.

Jonathan, as a fellow TV Squad writer, reading that post was a lot like watching someone cliff-dive into waters of unknown depth. Kind of cool to watch, but it made me scared to death to see whether or not your head is gonna pop back above water when it's all over. Godspeed, my friend.
(And I thought I was gutsy for taking on the Claymates...)

Don't you guys know better? What's the point of reviewing a genre that you admit up front to now liking? Unless it's to say, "I've been converted", shut up!!
Unless of course you guys are just trolling for new readers...

You're entitled to your opinion. I agree with a previous poster, if you aren't hooked by now you never will be. I believe BSG is one of the best dramas ever shown on television. I will miss it after this season.

Ha! You either love the show or you don't. I personally love it but share in your frustrations.
The humans seem to worry about petty things when there barely any of them left... killing each other over STUPID stuff... the Cylons should just sit back.
But then the Cylons CLEARLY outgun the Galactica, why are the Cylons' nukes used so sparingly? It's the middle of space... launch every nuke you have at the humans when you have the chance!
And what exactly do the Cylons do when they aren't plotting the demise of the human race?
But I do think the producers have an endgame to all the plot holes, hopefully it's worth it!

re: humans stupidity...
Ever read the whole biblical myth of the exodus? So Moses unleaches those plagues right? Brings egypt to her knees, leads them out of egypt with a pillar of smoke and fire, parts the "red sea" (well, read sea anyways) and wipes out Pharoh's 600 hundred strong chariot army before their very eyes... Moses and God do all this and what do the children of Israel do? They bitch and moan about food, make false idols and complain that they want to go home.
BSG obviously has some religious underpinnings and I both enjoy and appreciate that the humans are acting like humans. Unlike in Star Trek where everyone seems to operate out of an enlightened altruism, the humans in BSG act like the humans we all know today. They love, they hate, they get fixated on the seemingly unimportant and they get complacent.

Watching a show because other people like it is a terrible reason to watch a show. Maybe you just don't like it. My advice is stop watching now.
Certainly you have set it up to be a terrible disappointment. In my opinion, there is no way you can honestly write what you would have written in 2005. In 2005, we were all amazed a show based on a show as silly and cheesy as the original BG didn't suck. Our mindset going in was almost a total opposite to yours. You are coming in expecting the Peabody award winning, zeitgeist defining masterwork that you keep hearing about. It's there, for those who are open to it, but I guess for you this show will never satisfy.
Are there other genres you like, where the ridiculous decisions and behaviors of human beings as depicted in the absurdly twisted, event-filled genre of serialized storytelling don't detract from your enjoyment?
Just curious.

So, err.. I don't like things like this, and I don't like this one either.
That's.. fine. But why should we care? And why should we try to "convince" you otherwise?
