(S07E31) It's Mariah Carey night. Woo. Hoo.When the show started and they panned the final seven contestants, the first several were giggling until they got to Archuleta who had a weird smile on his face. I wonder if he had just cut one? Or maybe Ryan did, but it was in front of David and so he was trying not to pass out. Ryan opened the show by discussing the elimination of Michael Johns but did not offer an apology, as many have demanded, for the false glimmer of hope he cruelly gave Michael when he was cut.

Mariah Carey
I always like it when Idol gets an artist that's still relevant to the generation of the contestants as Mariah is. Generally they get people who are legends in their own right, but perhaps have moved past their heyday as artists the "kids" are listening to. And Mariah has some great pop songs, so they've got good choices.
Ryan brought up the fact that the judges always criticize contestants for trying to tackle the big voices like Mariah and Whitney and yet Mariah's the theme tonight so what do they do? My guess going in was that they hate the whole night. Fair enough, right? They tell each contestant that you can't help but compare a Mariah song to Mariah and you, sir (or ma'am), are no Mariah! Then tell them they should all be worried about going home.
David Archuleta - "When You Believe"
He said that he thought he wasn't worthy to be in her presence in his video entry. Let's see if going first will hurt David Archuleta at all as it has so many others; my money's on "No." He gave a really solid vocal on this song, which is a good fit for the kind off artist he should be. And he took Mariah's advice and slipped into a falsetto for a few notes, which actually worked. It was a good night for David. I just wish his dad would take off that stupid hat for once.
Judges: If you can sing, you can sing anything and you can sing anything is pretty much how Randy summed up the performance. Paula said that Mariah had to be beaming and that David made her proud. Simon knew this would be the song David picked and thought he performed it very well.
Carly Smithson - "Without You"
Carly said it's been boring without Michael Johns. As had been reported elsewhere, MJ was a bit of a goofball off-camera and that was missed. Mariah was actually excited to meet Carly. All the Carly-haters out there can be happy to see that she covered up her tattoo, while showing a lot more of her cleavage. So at least they still have something to look at and obsess over. Carly did a great job of arranging the range of the song to suit her voice and despite a missed run of notes toward the middle, she performed well, if not particularly exciting or memorable. And she made her classic Carly funny faces. Still, she could be in trouble considering her overall standing in the rankings and her being second to sing.
Judges: Randy wanted her to believe in herself a bit more in her lower range, but overall said she did a pretty good job. Paula appreciated the vocal restraint before her voice swelled and soared. And Simon wanted Carly to sing this song and thought she was capable of matching Mariah, but didn't. She held herself back and didn't believe in herself enough.
Syesha Mercado - "Vanishing"
I agree with Mariah that this was a good choice for Syesha. Considering that Syesha seems to want to be Mariah or Whitney every week, she had to be just thrilled that no one could criticize her for singing Mariah tonight. And again, I enjoyed the arrangement of the song and the vocal prowess that Syesha showed on this one. I truly think she has the power and ability to grow into a singer reaching toward Mariah's caliber if she sticks with it.
Judges: Randy appreciated her picking a tough song and thinks she did a good job on it. Paula gave her a standing ovation and credited her for being smart in selecting a lesser known Mariah song and summed up her performances a "unbelievably masterful." Simon said it was technically very, very good but he's worried that she chose a song that not many people know about.
Brooke White - "Hero"
Brooke followed up on the fact that she had to miss her sister's wedding this past Saturday due to Mariah being there. I'd argue that people get married on average two or three times and meeting Mariah is a once in a lifetime experience so her sister should understand. I think the song was a smart choice for her as it sticks to a much more manageable range. Still, there was really no way for her lack of range and vocal power to stand out on a Mariah joint and it did through much of this. I dug that she stuck with just the piano and her voice throughout the performance and she almost had one of those moments. There were just a few too many "off" notes and she seemed to pick up the tempo toward the end as if she was rushing toward the end.
Judges: Randy appreciated the singer-songwriter vibe and thought it was pretty good overall. Paula said she was identifiable and that she gave a brave performance and despite a few off-notes she was good. And Paula called her on picking up the tempo as well (see I'm not crazy). Simon thought she didn't have any choice but to perform how she did but compared her to a hamburger without a bun; her voice isn't strong enough to carry that song.
Kristy Lee Cook - "Forever"
She likes Kristy doing a song that many people don't know and said Kristy gave her goosebumps and performed the song better than even she did. If that doesn't give Kristy a shot of confidence nothing will. My wife pointed out last week that everything Kristy wears has some shiny element, and she took that to the next level this week with a shiny dress. I will give credit to Kristy for growing as a singer and performer, and in the choral parts of this song she was pretty good. But there were moments during the verses where she slipped the key and the melody. She did do a better job of not looking she's trying to straddle a horse up on the stage, which would have been really awkward in a dress.
Judges: It wasn't amazing, per Randy, but she definitely stepped up the performance toward the end. Paula again thinks she is smart and that she keeps improving each week and making strong song choices. When Simon finally got Paula to stop talking he said Kristy managed with what she had, was a bit whiny in places, but bottom line: it wasn't great for him.
David Cook - "Always Be My Baby"
Before his performance we got to see Ramiele in the audience. Rami could have had an amazing week with this theme. David put a really different twist on the song and Mariah liked the way he rearranged it into a haunting rock number. She felt he could have a hit record with it and I think I agree. He turned a love ballad into a stalker anthem and I really dug it more and more as it progressed. By the time he kicked it up a notch, David gave me tingles (sorry Kristy).
Judges: Randy said he was a hot recording artist ready to make an album and called it the most brilliant performance of the season offering David a standing ovation. Paula followed it up by agreeing that it was ready to be on a movie soundtrack and that David was "It." Simon said it was like coming out of karaoke hell (Kristy) and into a breath of fresh air. It was original, daring and the sign of a great potential artist. David took the praise very much to heart and actually got tears in his eyes.
DOUBLEPLAY - It doesn't happen at all some weeks and sometimes it happens multiple times, but for the most part, it is rare that a performance is so good that I want to go back immediately (the joys of DVR) and watch it again.
Jason Castro - "I Don't Want to Cry"
Before we could get to Castro, Ryan had to destroy a sign reading "Simon for President." You know, because he's a British citizen and isn't eligible. Jason again set up a jam band on stage but went without a guitar for himself. As Mariah stated, Jason's key was to connect with the audience in his performance, and he delivered on that in a big way. Like David Cook, and yet so unlike him, Jason turned this into something completely removed from how Mariah sang it and yet it was a beautiful tribute to her songwriting prowess. I think Jason also had an amazing week and has a lot to be proud of after that performance.
Judges: Randy didn't love it, comparing it to a strange beach luau. Paula would love to be at that luau, praising his confidence and growth. Simon said he thought that while it wasn't the best vocal it was a very cool version of the song.
DOUBLEPLAY - It doesn't happen at all some weeks and sometimes it happens multiple times, but for the most part, it is rare that a performance is so good that I want to go back immediately (the joys of DVR) and watch it again.
Best of the Night
Syesha Mercado, David Cook, Jason Castro
The Bottom Three
Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook
Going Home
Kristy Lee Cook (Or maybe Carly will go even though she covered her tats like so many of you wanted her to).

Carly wasn't as bad as Simon said. I wish Syesha would suddenly develop a case of transient vocal paralysis.

I can not understand why Brooke White is still on idol. She is better suited for the Mickey Mouse club. Could it be because the announcement of her LDS faith is always mentioned on Television...hinting to the rest of the LDS to vote for her because of her religion. David Archuletta is being voted for because of his voice....isn't that what this competition is about? Last week the wrong person was voted off....please America...listen to the voice...

Well
1) Brooke can sing.
2) She doesn't try to do things vocally that she's really not capable of doing.
3) She has an emotional connection to her songs that the other contestants are very lacking in.
4) People see themselves in her and see themselves buying her music.
That is why Brooke is still in the competition. @@
On a different subject here: Actually for the 1st time, I was impressed with Carly. I thought she really connected with the audience. And yes I am glad she covered up all her "artwork".
Brooke is still my bet to win it.
I am guessing tonight is the end of the road for either Syesha or Kristy. And it's a shame because Kristy has finally learned what her comfort zone is.

Sometimes I think Simon has something against Carly Smithson. Do I think she sang the song as well as Mariah Carey's version? No, but have any of these performers been that good? No, not even David A. The minute the studio version of "Without You" hits iTunes I'll be downloading it because I have no doubt it will be great.
Brooke White was one of my favorites from the moment she auditioned, and given the right producer and material I think she could carve out a decent musical career, especially in the gospel/faith market.
I'm sorry I just don't like David A. Yeah, he's talented, very talented, but in my opinion he's the boring choice.
Kristy Lee has definitely grown as a performer and while she did well, I don't think she pulled it off. I certainly didn't get the goosebumps Mariah Carey did. Again, like Brooke White, I think Kristy Lee could carve out a decent country/pop career given good material and a producer to really work with her.
David Cook has not always been my favorite, but I liked his version of "Always Be My Baby." A very different take on a typical Mariah Carey song. This is also one I'll download. Right now, David Cook should be the one to walk away with this competition, but it will probably be David A.
Jason Castro? Never really liked him, but he did OK.
Sadly, I think Carly will be out this time around. I just don't think she's connecting with the audience like the rest of the group. That's a shame because I've been a Carly fan from the beginning.

I agree with you about David Archaleta. He has an ok voice, but with that you need star quality. Sorry to say he has none. He is just to goofy for the spotlight. Carly and David Cook both have that spark.I missed the show last night, but it seem Carly didn't do to good. I think David Cook is the winner of the whole thing. I'll miss Carly though. she is very easy on the eye's

I'm not saying David A himself is boring, but I do believe he doesn't really test his range like some of the other performers. David Cook is a good example of this. He's shown a wide range of talent; whereas, David A can only seem to sing slow, breathy love songs.
What I do say is David A is boring "choice" if he wins Idol. Just another Taylor Hicks, another in a long line of balladeers who diappears less than a year after winning Idol. The exciting choices here would be Carly (because she's so different than the other performers) and David Cook because he's proven himself to be damn talented.
By the way, what is up with people complaining about the tats; it's who Carly is. Why should she have to look a certain way to win Idol? The show should be about the talent, not who's the cutest or who looks the best in a slinky dress. One of my biggest complaints about Simon is how he tries to push people into a certain box and if they can get there he writes them off, which I think he's done with Carly.

It's clear from tonight's performances what the past few weeks have been leading to: the remaining guy performers will be barn-storming to the final three. David Cook gave the best performance of the night (after a shaky one last week). Although he did his old "grunge rock-out-a-well-known-hit-as arranged-by-background-Fox-hired hand-pro-arrangers-to-win-points-on-originality " take on his tune, it was his vocals tonight that did it for me. Crisp, all notes on the money, and some great powerful long tones. David Archuleta? Right up there. The "he's boring" people can think what they want to, but this kid can sing, and sing his ass off he did. Although not as exciting a performance as David C., Archie's was note for note on the money, showing some serious pro chops, technique, and soulful interpretation. And Jason Castro? Randy was dead wrong and Paula (believe it or not) and Simon were right on the money in their positive comments. This guy can sing and, although without the blazing pipes of David A. or the flair and energy of David C., he was spot on with every note with that unique Jason C. inflection. A nice original approach to the song carried by his obvious increase in stage confidence and his cool, individual style. He's still a long shot to win against the other two, but, who knows? He's been unpredictable since Hollywood and now a favorite.

It's too bad that Simon has had an obvious disdain for Carly from day one, she's very talented, Brooke too is talented but she doesn't have the vocals that Carly does and I believe Syesha too has talent but not the range and power like Carly...my remaining three would be Carly, David C and David A...Carly would go first then the real battle...someone with the vocals like David A or someone with very good vocals and insane originality like David C...depends on what age level is dialing the phone that night ... my guess is age bracket 12-17 are more likely to vote and revote so that would mean David A...

David Archuleta is actually a good performer. If I wasn't such an old guy (age 44) I'd probably be more likely to appreciate his abilities. But at my advanced age, I feel funny voting for HS teenagers.
Or I'd have voted for Alaina Whitaker in the beginning.

Jason, what happened to the way you used to do your own comments after recapping what the judges said? That was my favorite part of reading your reviews!
That being said, David Cook once again demonstrated that not only does he have the vocals, he has the uncompromising attitude and creativity to win it all and be a huge star.
Now, let's hope he gets voted off before that happens so he doesn't have to be forced to sign the Idol contract and put out a crap album.

Uggh... not me, I thought that was pretentious and unnecessary. I much prefer the recap the way it runs now. And on top of that, I do believe that everyone knows by now what the DoublePlay is. You know, its when "It doesn't happen at all some weeks and sometimes it happens multiple times, but for the most part, it is rare that a performance is so good that I want to go back immediately (the joys of DVR) and watch it again." Its actually so "rare" that it shows up virtually every recap, sometimes even TWICE! I can do without reading that inane and repetitious quip each week. As a matter of fact, I'm calling my own Doubleplay here: Uggh! when a recap feature is so overused that it is no longer wanted or necessary. I actually like the Doubleplay reference but PLEASE all that is really needed is for you to put the word "Doubleplay" in bold letters at the end of the Artist/Song Title heading at the start of each performance. PLEASE.
Personally, I think the bottom three this week should be Brooke, Syesha and Carly. The point was made earlier that Carly hasn't really connected with the audience and in truth, the same can be said about Syesha and Brooke. If you really think about it, with the exception of Brooke's performance of "Let it Be" several weeks ago (which I actually think was VERY overrated) she's struggled with both her limited vocal range and her inability to feel comfortable on stage. An early fave for me, she's been lost for many weeks now and is ready to go IMHO. I'm a Carly fan but getting beat up relentlessly by Simon is going to hurt her getting as much support from her potential fan base. Same with Syesha.
How does this differ with KLC? I think that Kristy has actually improved both her confidence and her performing skills. She plays well to her strengths and I think her last three weeks have been well above average performances. She's got fans of all ages and I think she falls into the Kelli Pickler category of performers. Kelli got slammed week after week on AI but at this point she's got a darn good career going and was even up for the CMA's top awards this week. She won't win Idol but I guaranteed you that she'll be around and visible after her elimination. She's got that magic blend of talent and charisma that will take her a very long way in the business. That girl can SING and she looks great doing so.
