Katie Couric will probably leave CBS early (maybe, possibly, maybe not)

Katie CouricThis is approximately the 57th "Katie Couric is doing badly in the ratings and will probably will fired or quit her job at CBS" story that has surfaced in the past year, but since it's The Wall Street Journal, perhaps he has a little more gravitas to it?

Possibly.

The newspaper is reporting that "CBS executives" and "people close to Couric" say that she will probably leave her job as anchor of The CBS Evening News well before her contract is up in 2011. She might even leave in early 2009, right after the current Presidential election is over.

Now, I'm curious as to who these "people close to Couric" are, because if they're giving The Wall Street Journal quotes about her leaving the newscast, they must be awfully close, like a sibling or a favorite uncle. And as for the talk of Couric taking over for Larry King Live over at CNN when he finally retires, that smells of guesswork. Sure, it could happen, but it sounds more like "that's a natural next step for Couric" talk and not some sort of inside information that someone at CBS or CNN has spilled. I think you and I could have come up with this option a few months ago before the WSJ did. I can picture Couric in that role I guess, though it would be a shame in a way if she left her job at CBS for ratings reasons. I mean, is it really her fault or just the nature of the network news biz and CBS's constant third place rank with the show?

For the record, both CBS and Couric released statements, and while they don't outright deny the story is false they also say that they are each happy with what is happening with the newscast and that she plans to stay.
