(S07E28) This is a big week for American Idol. We have three episodes; the performance and results shows sandwiched around the two-and-a-half hour "Idol Gives Back" star-studded spectacular airing tomorrow at 7:30 ET. But first, we have a theme of "Inspirational Songs" and eight Idol contenders to get through tonight. Join us, won't you, for another spectacular non-star-studded live chat during tonight's episode, starting just before 8:00pm ET.
You can join the chat by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.
As this week is "Idol Gives Back," Paula dressed up for the occasion in a lovely strapless cocktail dress. And Kristy dressed up by wearing white jeans. Tomorrow is the big show, though most, if not all, of it was taped this past weekend. In keeping with the theme of charity and hope and love and all that stuff, tonight's theme is "Inspirational Songs."
Michael Johns - "Dream On," Aerosmith
I won't say that I was feeling the neckerchief, but he continues his string of solid song choices and powerfully controlled vocals. Looks like someone wants to make a competition of it. This is one of my favorite songs and I've got to give mad props to Michael for even handling the Steven Tyler wailing at the end of his arrangement.
Judges: Randy thought it was a pretty good song choice, but there were pitch problems and he doesn't think that performance is the kind of singer Michael is. Paula disagreed, saying he sounded as good as he looked and thought he was unbelievable. Simon thought it was a good performance, but agrees a bit with Randy in that he doesn't think Michael works as a "wannabe" rock star. He works better as a bluesy/R&B artist for him.
Syesha Mercado - "I Believe," Fantasia
Syehsa, Ramiele's roommate, says that Rami's working hard and doing well. Is this the first time we've had someone tell us how the just-eliminated contestant is doing? Always risky is singing a former Idol winner's song on the Idol stage. But Syesha has a tendency to reach very ambitiously, and more often than not she reaches that mark. Tonight I really enjoyed the tenderness in her voice when it started before she went into the expected belting. Overall, I think it was a great performance at just the time she needed it. She faltered ever so slightly just before the falsetto at the end, but still it was impressive for me. I could be biased though as I thought Fantasia's performance of this was incredibly moving when she won the show.
Judges: Randy gives her credit for taking on such an ambitious song but didn't feel a connection to it the same way Fantasia did. Paula agreed that not many people can take on a song or singer like Fantasia, but still thought this was one of her most shining nights. Simon said she sang it very well, but it lacked that big wave of emotion that Fantasia delivered.
Jason Castro - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," as performed by Israel "Iz" Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole
Iz's performance of this was with ukelele accompaniment, so Jason also played the ukelele. I thought the piece lost a bit when the strings came in behind him, but this was a brilliant song choice and arrangement for the folksy Jason. The first three contestants must have been inspired by the festivities of the week as they really stepped up their game impressively for me. All three were true to their personal styles and very good in them.
Judges: Randy said that was the hottest performance of the night so far. Paula thinks he has the most definitive sound. It was a perfect song choice and he did a great job with it. Simon hadn't heard that version much before tonight but thought Jason's performance of it was fantastic.
DOUBLEPLAY - It doesn't happen at all some weeks and sometimes it happens multiple times, but for the most part, it is rare that a performance is so good that I want to go back immediately (the joys of DVR) and watch it again.
Kristy Lee Cook - "Anyway," Martina McBride
I think Ramiele would have really been able to shine with this theme. That said, I went into this thinking Kristy would do well with it, too. She's very smart with song choices generally. And tonight she chose a very straightforward song with limited vocal range, but one that reaches out to pull the heartstrings of heartland America. She knows how to reach her audience. She reached a bit farther than her voice could handle at a few points, but as expected and in continuing with the trend of the night, Kristy pulled off one of her better performances of the season.
Judges: Randy said despite a few pitch problems he loved that. Paula thought it was her best performance by far of the competition. Simon thought that she not only showed who she was as an artist, but also did "very good." He agreed with me that it was a smart song choice appealing to her audience.
David Cook - "Innocent," Our Lady Peace
In his opening video, David had a normal hair cut which blew my mind. The shorter cut works for him but the style tonight was a bit top-heavy for me. And for the first time in a long time, I wasn't blown away when he started his performance. But by the middle of it, his vocals just pulled me in and I found myself loving it anyway. Not the best we've seen him, but still a good performance.
Judges: Randy wasn't sure it was one of his strongest weeks either; it fell short for him. Paula, however, thought it was just great. Simon, disagreed with her and thought it came across as pompous, citing the white jacket as a reason. Simon thought it was his weakest performance in the last few weeks.
Carly Smithson - "The Show Must Go On," Queen
Yet again, the contestants this year want to tackle Freddie Mercury. Carly has the vocal capabilities to handle the song, but it doesn't really work for me. Don't get me wrong, she can sing and sings parts of this very well, but the arrangement and the various parts where she wailed seemed as if she tried a bit harder than necessary in the arrangement. It was inconsistent for me.
Judges: It started off good, got a bit pitchy in the middle and wound up just okay for Randy. Paula said that while her voice is pretty perfect, there was no connection from Carly to the audience. It was a disconnect. Simon countered last week's comments to say she looked good, but thought her song choice unusual. He thought it was oversung and ultimately it came over as angry and out of control. He predicted she could be in trouble after that.
David Archuleta - "Angels," Robbie WilliamsDavid did not stop smiling once during his interview with Ryan. Does he do it out of nervousness? He performed this from behind a piano and I hoped and prayed he wouldn't get up halfway through to really emote the "meaning" of the song, as I tire of cliched performances. It was weird for me tonight as David was great on the more powerful passages of the song, but it sounded off-key and weak during some of the softer lines. In the end, though, this was one of the most authentic performances we've gotten all season from David. And he stayed his ass behind the piano like he should have.
Judges: Randy thought the moment at the end with the runs and the piano pause was his hottest moment all season. Ultimately, it was crazy and he loved it. Paula said simply, "Fantastic." Simon said it was the best song choice of the night, but it wasn't David's best vocal, ending stronger than it began. Nevertheless, he has nothing to worry about in the voting.
Brooke White - "You've Got a Friend," Carole King
Brooke let someone else play the piano and went with a simple dress, a mic stand and her voice. It is a beautiful song and fits the mellow tones of Brooke's voice, but was that performance memorable or impressive enough to stand out on the night? I think Brooke is very fortunate she went last as I think had she gone first the audience would have forgotten she was even on the show by the end. At least she didn't try to dance. But she did talk as usual throughout the judges' critiques.
Judges: Randy wasn't mad at her for that performance, but it was only okay for him. The song had a special place in Paula's heart and thought it was a definitive performance of it by Brooke and a good cap on the evening. Simon likened it to a pleasant walk in the park. It wasn't original, but it was pleasant.
Remember that there are no eliminations tomorrow night. Instead we have "Idol Gives Back," starting before prime time even, at 7:30/6:30pm Central Time. Watch and call in and go to the Idol Gives Back MySpace page to donate and then come back here on Thursday for a special elimination episode at the usual time.
Best of the Night
Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro, David Archuleta
The Bottom Three
Syesha Mercado (because I know you all hate her), Carly Smithson, Brooke White
Going Home
Carly Smithson (Maybe you'll get rid of Syesha this week and I'll be mad at you).

I thought the judges were very inconsistent. They harp on Michael Johns and Syesha Mercado for not being original, but tell Jason Castro how fantastic he is even though is performance was an exact copy of the Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' version of the same song. I actually think David Cook will find himself in the bottom three with that horrible performance; and I think Brooke and Carly will join him. I didn't think any of the performances were all that great and I'm so bored with David Archuleta. Simon said his performance was nasally, and he was right, but all of Archuleta's performances are like that. Sadly, he'll probably be the winner but hopefully he'll fade away like all the other boring choices in the last few years (anyone remember Taylor Hicks?).

re: jason... if by "exact" you mean schlocky poorly sung rip off, then yes, I agree it was an "exact" copy of israel's. Israel's version can make a grown man cry... well, I guess so can Jason's... cry tears of pain.

You're daft if you think David A. won't be successful as a recording artist if he wins this season.
He will get all the teeny girls and the grandmas and the Mormons to buy his records. They will eat him up with a spoon.
Remember Clay Aiken? David A. is a lot more likable than Clay, and Clay is doing very well.
Taylor Hicks was (is) an aberration. You can't compare David A. to him. Other winners and runners-up have done very well.
And he is only 17. Which means he has a lot of time to develop and improve his vocal talent and his persona. Unless his crazy father interferes with him.

Remember Taylor Hicks? I sure do. His is the only AI album I have ever bought. Love it.

I didn't watch this week (Was out, I love spring) but it sounds like I didn't miss much. There are several good singers in the top 12 and they will all get record deals so it doesn't matter.

you know i really wanted michael to sing "dream on" since i heard him in hollywood. The steven tyler falsetto was a bit bad but, i loved the rest of the song. I'm pretty sure his studio version will be great and i'll definitely buy it!
Top of the night for me as always : Michael, Jason, David C.

My thoughts ...
Michael proved last week was a fluke. Watching him tonight, I wish he had been voted off after butchering A Day In The Life.
I've been a fan of Syesha's from early on, but I think she made a mistake singing Whitney last week. She made two bigger mistakes this week: 1. singing Fantasia, and 2. associating herself with Ramiele.
Jason was brilliant. It was the best performance of the night and his best of the season -- even better than Hallelujah.
Kristy Lee was OK. She gets a bad rap, but I think she still deserves to be in the competition.
David C. gave his worst performance so far, which was surprising given that he said it was his favorite song. His stock fell big-time, and he knew it. I expect a legendary rebound performance from him next week, especially if the mentor is Neil Diamond.
Carly joined the handful of Idol hopefuls who are delusional enough to think they can pull off a Queen song. News flash: You can't. Simon's comment about her performance being "angry" was spot-on.
David A. was good. What else is there to say?
Brooke is endearing until her performance ends and she starts running her mouth. Just sing, take the criticism and get off the stage, please. She gave a decent performance, but the arrangement and band accompaniment sucked, somewhat reminiscent of Kristy Lee's now-infamous Eight Days A Week.
Bottom three: Michael, Syesha and Carly.
Going home: Syesha.

Mentor is Mariah Carey so I'm hoping that if Kristie
survives Thurs. she will go next week. I can't possibly
imagine how she can sing anything of Mariah's and
get votes.

Most of the problem tonight came not from song choice, but the contestants' lack of connection with the song/audience. It's Inspirational Song Week for Pete's sake! Without that connection these songs are nothing.
Having said that, I think you definitely singled out the best performances of the night: Michael, Syesha, and Jason. All of them sang with conviction and a modicum of connection to the song.
The next tier would consist of Brooke, and the two Davids. Good solid performances from all three, but they were missing that special something. Luckily for Archuleta, the judges loved him.
Finally, the bottom spots go to KLC (good performance for her, but relatively meh) and Carly (what the heck was that?!).
Bottom three will probably be KLC, Carly, and Syesha.

My picks for the bottom three are Archuleta, Carly and Syesha. And I know that it’s not likely to happen, but my pick to go home is Archuleta.

I was a little disappointed with Michael's opening performance. It wasn't bad, but it didn't thrill me like, um, like last week. And then I saw the rest of the show.
Jason, performing on the ukelele (sp?). I DON'T GET HIM. i just don't.
Brooke, who won me over with her tender performance of Let It Be--disappoints. Get back to the piano, Brooke.
David Cook, a dynamic performer--what was up with that freaky sounding beginning of the song?
David A, sings nasally EVERY WEEK. Will sell out in Branson, MO, not on the charts. How can he get praise for a lackluster performance like that? I am starting to believe the conspiracy theories when he gets universal praise for that performance.
Carly, who wants it more than anything, maybe too much. Carly, whose voice is simply amazing--What happened? it was NOT GOOD!
Syesha and KLC--not good performers (overall). Syesha had a good vocal, but she doesn't have the passion in her voice. KLC stands like a wax figure and though I admit she is getting better, it will take ALOT to get 8 Days a Week out of my memory bank.
Which brings me back to Michael. For a show of this caliber, he actually was one of the top performers for me.
I'm afraid that Carly, who I really like, will be leaving.

I tuned in tonight specifically for David C's performance, since he has consistently been my favourite Idol contestant. What a disappointment. David didn't just stumble: he flailed and he reeled and he fell flat on his face all thanks to his catastrophic song choice. This is what inspires him? It was all kinds of wrong, that song. Tsk tsk. If David C. doesn't make it into the bottom three on Thursday night it will be solely on the strength of his past performances. If he doesn't get the boot, it will be for that same reason.
He'd have my sympathy vote this week, but I have only one get out of jail free card for each performer before my attention deficit disorder kicks in and I shift my emotional investment to someone else.

It's obvious you people are watching a different show than me if you're voting for Jason in this poll. He's the worst on the show. Hopefully you're not actually voting in real life.

How do you figure? How many notes were off-key last night? (Answer: 0) What about Kristy Lee? David Archuleta? David Cook? Michael Johns? Simply put, he's got the best pitch of any of them, is the most emotionally connected to the music and is the most connected to the audience. If you don't like him, it's most likely because of his looks and lack of cookie-cutter popstar credentials. Big notes do not equal great singers.
Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, Neil Young, Bradley Nowell, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, etc. didn't have big voices, didn't hit power notes and didn't have conventional looks for music.

I finally realized last night why Kristie is still on the show.
It's the McPhee factor. What that means is guys want
to keep her there because of the boobs. I finally saw
it with the outfit she had on.
This girl has marginal talent. She's no better then someone singing karoke or a piano bar singer. She has
no personality and is on of the most boring singers the
show has ever had.
Thank God, next week is Mariah. I'm hoping that will
finally be the end of the line for her.
Personally, my favorite is David Cook. I have bought
his studio versions of Billie Jean & Little Sparrow and he
blew me away. He also has the support of one of the
most important record producers in the country. That
is David Foster who has said that David C. deserves to
win. Even if he doesn't, he will have a great career just
like Chris Daughtry has had since he came in 5th.
People like Daughtry, Josh Gracin & Clay Aiken have
proven that you don't have to win to have a great
career and on the other side of the coin, you could win
like Ruben & Taylor and see your career fizzle.
Like I said, my favorite is David C. and I also like Carly,
Brooke, David A. & Michael Johns. Jason is ok but every
thing he does is the same.

I'm sorry. I agree with Paula. I thought David pulled it
off as usual. I do agree about the jacket though.
I will be very disappointed if he gets the boot. He
deserves top 2. If someone has to go based on past
performances, it should be Kristie the stiff.

I see the bottom three being Carly, Brooke, and Michael. Carly has a decent voice but her song selection has not been great. I like Brooke but fear we have seen all she has to offer (stage presence, i.e., showmanship, lacks). I have never been a big fan of Michael - I think he strains a lot when he moves away from the R & B style. Unfortunately, I think Brooke will be leaving tonight.
