Earlier today, we reported on NBC's fall lineup. The most intriguing nugget: the long rumored Office spinoff is, indeed, happening this year. Kristin over at E! clarified things a bit (kinda) by reporting that though The Office spinoff exists semi-officially, it still does not exist creatively. Apparently, they're still trying to find the right premise for such a spinoff (and if you're not scared about the show existing before the premise does, then you haven't been watching TV for very long). That said, it was around this time four years ago that fans of the UK Office were worrying whether or not the NBC version would go the way of Coupling, so I think it's worth giving NBC the benefit of the doubt on this one. I'd like to open the floor to our enlightened commenters on just what the premise of an Office spinoff might be...
Here is my thinking about the different spinoff possibilites (and, please, feel free to disagree; my logic is usually less cohesive than a stoner after his eleventh pumpkin-bong hit):
1. It won't be Dwight. I know that's where most of the speculation is headed, but Dwight is too much at the center of the show to ever be moved. When was the last time a "big four" player was moved off a sitcom? This would be like sending Carla from Cheers off with her ex-husband to anchor The Tortellis.
2. It might be Ryan. He's already been shuffled off to corporate, which gets us into a new setting and conflict (as it's been established that he's a less-than-popular figure there). Add on to this that B.J. Novak is a producer and writer on the show, and it starts to make some sense from a business angle as well.
3. The most likely scenario, in my opinion is Angela, Oscar, and Kevin being spun off into The Accountants. All three are popular (Kevin especially so), and all three have already starred in their own mini-adventure (remember NBC's webisodes of The Accountants?) It'd be easy enough to have the three of them decide to strike out on their own as private accountants and watch the hilarious fallout. (Though, admittedly, even as I type this, it does feel just a little bit like Chief Wiggum, P.I. This might wind up being too stupid to consider.)
Give me your best spinoff scenario in the comments (as well as your reasoning behind it). It'll give us something to do until The Office returns next Thursday.
(And, uh, small plug: I'll be reviewing The Office again starting next week as well. Be sure to stop by TV Squad by midnight on the night the show airs to start the discussion!)

Jan - Have her win her case against Dunder-Mifflin, get paid, immediately dump Michael (now that she's set financially) and move her off to her own show with a new cast of wacky characters.

I don't know if Rashida Jones has decided to not do The Office anymore, but lets hope she could be in the Spinoff.
I could also see the Ryan spinoff you talked about.
But I agree, I think what they will do is "The Accountants". The webisodes for them were hit or miss, but this seems like exactly what NBC would do. I do like Kevin and Angela though. I can't see it being a 30 minute show though... I hate when they go and mess around with my favorite things.

i won't be surprised that it's Andy. i don't think anyone predicted that Ed Helms would be so good.

I'm pretty sure they said it would NOT affect the main show in any way so i doubt they would use anyone from the main office

"Corporate" could work, though Ryan can't carry the show. They'd need to introduce some major characters. And moving Jim or Michael would be a mistake. Hopefully Unhitched gets cancelled, and they can bring back Rashida Jones.
I wonder whether the whole Stamford storyline was a test run of a spin-off concept...

Good thinking there too :) All Warehouse, look at how much we've missed out on in the warehouse?! I love those guys! And an occasional Packer appearance would be great too. You still a Queer Jim?

My idea for The Warehouse is too good to be a spinoff.

I definitely want to see more of those two.
My ideas were the Warehouse with Daryl and Patrice O'Niel (that guy is hilarious, watch his Def Jam performance) or Corporate where Ryan gets stuck with Todd Packer and David whatever his name is (the CIO?).

An adaptation and a spin off are different in my opinion. An adaptation draws completely new viewers that might have never seen the product/show. A spin off is probably only going to cater to the existing audience of the first show. I am not confident that NBC could do this successfully. They botched Joey, which should have been a ratings hit in my opinion (and compared to current NBC viewership would be a hit), considering it had the most popular star from the one of their most heavily watched shows. And NBC canceled Joey with a larger audience than the Office even draws. So now they want to spin off a critically acclaimed but not heavily watched show? Makes no sense. There's no doubt a lot of Office watchers will tune in. But since there aren't many to begin with, where does NBC think they're going to generate new viewers from?

Michael, Jim, Pam, and Dwight are out. "The Accountants" is probably the kind of idea that will happen, but it doesn't excite me at all. Ryan or Karen would be best, I think. Or both. And taking Andy along with him/her/them could work too.

1. Vance Refrigeration
2. Some other "dull & plain" office (same documentary camera style but at some other company or office = completely new set of characters)
I can kinda see the corporate office angle but I agree that Ryan (BJ) couldn't carry the show on his own (he's an awesome guy I just don't see it)
3. off the wall ideas,
PING
Agent Michael Scarn
Prison Mike
Michael the Magic
or Mose's Power (1/2) Hour

TVGuide.com reported back in October that they'd introduce new characters and then spin them off. A la Private Practice, without a Show A cast member centering Show B.: http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Ausiello-Report/Exclusive-Nbc-Plans/800025959

I think that "corporate" would only work if you introduce more off the wall characters because a show without Ryan to really play off or react to would be pretty boring. then i think we would just get into just a second office which would be pointless. I think "warehouse" is a much better idea because its not an "office" setting so we could get different types of gags. Also we already know a couple of the people from the warehouse. if it is warehouse than they should find some way to bring Roy back to the warehouse since he is already established in the franchise. Warehouse would also be good because you could still have the workers from that office upstairs come by without being added to the main cast (" It's like when the people on lost met the others"). We could also see Roy in the backround shooting daggers at Jim while he's talking. Well this is getting long so i'll end it here

I think there's three directions they should go with an Office spinoff. Obviously there's a lot more places they can go, but these make the most sense to me and also seem like they would be the most entertaining.
One: Basically use the spinoff to turn The Office into an hour long show. Set the spinoff in someplace like the warehouse or another branch but have the story take place over the whole hour. The first half hour takes place in the regular Dundler Mifflin setting, the second takes place somewhere else, but the characters go back and forth showing up on either show however it advances the storyline. I think of it like a comedy Law And Order where you might see Dwight pop up at the end of the spinoff to add something.
Two: A complete new show set in a completely different setting with absolutely no connection to the original except for the same pacing and setup. Maybe the documentary crew became so successful with The Office they decided to create a second show. This could take place anywhere, but some of the first things I thought of were a medical clinic, an airport, or my favorite, a low-rated sports network where you see them prepping and attending cheesy sporting events you might see late at night on ESPN2. Granted, those shows were already made and were called Becker, Wings, and Sports Night, but they didn't have the style of The Office.
Three: This is my favorite. Make the spinoff about the documentary crew filming The Office. You could have scenes where they are filming the crew filming The Office, show them back at their office trying to piece together the footage they have and making jokes about scenes we've already seen on The Office, show some of the other productions they are working on, them dealing with the network or whoever is distributing their documentaries.

I say give the Stamford branch to Stanley. He definitely needs more lines. I could see him butting heads with Ryan at corporate. He would also still be close enough to the Scranton branch so Michael and Dwight could pop-in on road trips and get him even more grumpier.
