Dancing With The Stars: Week 3 results

Jonathan Roberts and Steve Guttenberg

(S06E06) Tom informed us that since they never announced last week's bottom two, no one knows where they stand this week. I doubt that Kristi Yamaguchi was sweating this one out, but no matter. This week's Dancing With The Stars results show featured Kylie Minogue, a little April Fools' joke, and an all-male encore performance courtesy of Steve and Jonathan.

The show opened with another exciting recap of the previous evening's routines. Kristi claimed that she could bring a naughty element to her onstage persona, then broke into one of her sweet Olympic smiles. Jason worried that his dancing days were numbered after Len's feather duster remark. Marissa was expecting 8's for her jive, and was shocked by the the harsh feedback. Marlee was still trying to figure out Carrie Ann's pancakey hands comment. Mario said that his body wasn't listening to his mind last night, to which Karina added, "Or my mind." Something tells me that Karina is the least fun female professional to work with. Steve was happy with the praise he received, but planned on keeping his helmet around for a while. Adam thought Carrie Ann was being too charitable in calling him sexy. Shannon confessed to having major nerves during her routine. Cristián thought his performance was his best yet. Priscilla was flattered by her tango's high scores, and acknowledged that she is up against tough competitors.

For the encore, the judges wanted to see more of Steve and Jonathan's tango from rehearsals. Jonathan took his wife's place with Steve for the entire routine, and it was actually good. The men had fun with their "man-go," and did a manly chest bump at the end. Afterward, Tom gave us a rundown of the leaderboard: Marissa was in 10th place; Steve, Mario, Marlee, and Adam were tied for 6th; Jason and Shannon were in 5th and 4th place, respectively; Cristián was going strong in third; Priscilla was in second behind Kristi.

In the first elimination round, Kristi Yamaguchi and Adam Carolla were put on the safe list. Now I'm convinced that Julianne's fans are keeping her in contention. I expected Adam to get the boot after his comments last night. Julianne's cuteness is powerful, indeed.

For her first performance, Kylie Minogue sang "All I See" from her newest album. Later, the audience got a chance to sound off on the celebrities' routines. Sabrina Bryan thought Priscilla Presley looked beautiful. Eli Stone's Natasha Henstridge disagreed with Len's assessment of Mario. One man said that Shannon was doing much better than most pretty women have on past seasons. Other fans worried that Steve, Marlee, and Marissa were in danger.

The second elimination round put Marissa's fears to rest. She and Priscilla Presley were declared safe. Things weren't looking good for the Gutte at this point. I tried to convince myself that Marlee Matlin was on her way out, but I wasn't very successful. Backstage, Samantha talked with the four safe contestants. Adam stole the microphone and began teasing Kristi about her humble remarks, and told Kristi and Priscilla that he'd see them in hell. Is Adam trying to see what he can get away with before he leaves the show?

It was April Fools' joke time, and we learned that the contestants have some odd hobbies. Jason is into ships in a bottle, Marlee is a volunteer police officer, and Shannon is president of the MacGyver fan club. Where does that leave Patty and Selma? Priscilla does the psychic hotline thing, Marissa has a passion for surfing, Steve does freestyle rap, and Cristián has a pet otter. Also, Kristi Yamaguchi is a champion hot dog-eater.

The Macy's Stars of Dance performance featured a routine called "Revelations" by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The dance company is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and I can see why it is so popular. The routine was more like a large-scale musical theater performance than a standard dance number. I don't always like the Stars of Dance segments, but this was a real treat. Kylie Minogue returned for her second song, the hit "Can't Get You Out Of My Head." Julianne and Mark performed as well. Julianne's brother was supposed to dance with them, but Derek was sidelined with a neck injury. He was hurt during rehearsals, but I've read that he'll be able to dance next week.

Backstage, Samantha interviewed Cristián and Steve. Cristián joked that Cheryl would have no trouble finding more animals that danced better than him. Steve made peace with the wardrobe department (due to Adam's remarks on Monday) by thanking them for their hard work and complimenting the costumes. What a kind gesture! Tom reminded us that viewers can film their own dance routines and send them in to ABC. The best videos could end up on the DWTS website. The thought of the rejected videos made me shudder.

The award for worst filler segment of the season goes to Dr. Pepper Schwartz and the matchups analysis. Did you know that opposites attract, and that similar personalities can clash? Yes, so did I. Dr. Pepper believed that most couples were going to have issues, but thought that Kristi and Mark were a perfect match.

In the third phase of elimination, Jason Taylor and Marlee Matlin were put on the safe list. This left Shannon, Steve, Mario, and Cristián. Once again, the bottom two were not revealed, which made me wonder which of the other contestants narrowly escaped elimination. Both Shannon and Cristián were declared safe, with Steve and Mario remaining in suspense. Finally, Steve Guttenberg was sent home.

I totally understand the reasons behind this outcome, but I still hate it. Steve wasn't the most exciting or most improved dancer of the bunch. I liked his personality and attitude more than his dancing, but it was nice to have a positive, humble celebrity on TV for a little while. I'll miss the upbeat, genuine vibe he brought to the show.

Next week--Brett returns to recap the top nine couples' performances. In the meantime, check out AOL's extensive Dancing With The Stars coverage, which includes photo galleries, polls, and a live chat.

Will you miss The Gutte?
