To prove that any money-making franchise develops copycats, Nickelodeon will be making their own version of High School Musical. This one will be called Spectacular! The Viacom-owned studio will begin shooting this television musical next month. It's about a female preppy choir singer in high school that falls for a badboy rocker. The studio claims that the musical numbers will be performance-based rather than spontaneous such as in HSM. In short, it's the story of Jerry Lee Lewis minus the pedophilia.
The exclamation point is part of the title, so nobody thinks it's only average. This is a tactic that has been used by various stage musicals such as Oliver! to get people more interested.
When The Cosby Show hit it big in the 80's on NBC, CBS tried to respond with the short-lived sitcom Charlie & Co. starring Flip Wilson. I suspect Spectacular! is going to be this generation's Charlie & Co. Maybe Nickelodeon will prove me wrong.

How about a copycat of Jericho or Deadwood with the same exact casts and continue the storylines right where they left off and give them 10 year guarantees not to be cancelled. Oops, I forgot, there are no network idiots smart enough to do that!
