Chances are the NBC censor will not have to worry about Ian McShane's mouth this time around; he won't be playing Frank in Deadwood. No, the new role he's tackling is a much more majestic kind of guy. What am I talking about? Ian McShane has been cast as one of the title characters in NBC's new drama Kings.McShane, who was a memorable, dirty-mouthed proprietor of a seedy saloon on HBO's Deadwood, will be King Silas on Kings. The Universal project is said to be set in modern times, although its based on a story from the Old Testament, King David (remember Richard Gere in the movie of the same name?)
Michael Green is writing, and Christopher Egan, who was a principal in Fox's ambitious failure Vanished in 2006, will play David. According to the description, he's a pure-hearted young warrior who joins the court of the charismatic and authoritative Silas after saving the life of the king's son. Um, are they sure this is a contemporary piece?
NBC will announce the 2008-09 schedule on Wednesday. Reportedly, McShane's casting is seen as a sign that Kings will get picked up. The actor, a Golden Globe winner for Deadwood, has been starring on Broadway in a revival of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. It'll be good to see him back on TV, hopefully in something as interesting as his HBO western.

McShane's performance on Deadwood is definitely the best performance on TV in the last 10-20 years. I was just mesmerized whenever he was on screen.

He won a Golden Globe but not an Emmy. Can you fucking believe that? They had 3 chances to give him an emmy but they didn't.

Albert Swearingen joined Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pierce, Dr. Gregory House, and Tony Soprano as my all-time favorite TV characters. McShane's portrayal of the foul-mouthed saloon owner was legendary. NBC will, hopefully, have a hit on their hands with "Kings". If they don't, it won't be because McShane failed to convince the audience!
