(S07E15) This episode could have easily been the season finale of Smallville. It had characters change, characters vanish and a very sad cliffhanger ending. I wonder if it was the last one written before the writer's strike started?
It opened with a quiet day on the Kent farm. Then Brainiac (played by James Marsters) showed up and things got violent. In a rare instance, Clark showed up on time in the beginning to save the day, rather than the end of the program. On another note, that farm gets trashed a LOT.
This episode continued the Lex / Lionel Luthor arc that has been building this season. Could it be more obvious that Lionel is being set up to die, killed by his own son? There are spoilers on the Internet saying that a cast regular will die next episode. It pretty much spelled out in the previews for the next episode "Descent" (to be shown on April 17th). On the other hand, the show has misdirected us before, so I'm not going to say that's a sure thing until I see the body.
I don't know how residuals work in Hollywood, exactly, but does the actress who played Patricia Swann get something for the use of her likeness in photos and such? I would suspect so. Probably not as much as if she were physically in the episode, however.
At first, I thought Brainiac was pulling a Sylar and got his energy from human brains. I liked how he lobotomized Lana because it meant less of her whining.
Lois' character remains consistent. She has no problem bending the law to get a story (and it seems that Jimmy Olsen is becoming her protegé in that regard). How is it that she doesn't get jail time for B and E? Oh wait. It's television.
Lex's sins are catching up with him. Nothing like a homicide accusation to make him lose ownership of the Daily Planet.
I did let out a chuckle when Kara tried pushing Clark upward ("Up, up and away"). Despite his growth, I guess they need a bigger moment before the producers break the "no flights, no tights" rule. You'd think Kara being taken away by Brainiac would be enough.
My favorite parts of the episode were the flashbacks with young Lex (starring the same actor who played young Lex in "Fracture") explaining how he and his father were in Smallville at the time of the meteor shower. Backstory like that always makes for a better experience for the viewer, in my opinion. I also got a laugh when I saw young Oliver Queen holding a toy bow and arrow. Also, Lex was playing with an action figure (not a doll) that looked like a bald Superman. That's as much foreshadowing as Clark and Kara ALWAYS wearing blue and red.
Another Smallville oddity: how does a newspaper have access to a power grid? Chloe's visibility has been somewhat lessened in recent episodes. Given how the focus has remained on everyone else, that may be consistent. Unless, of course, they are setting her character up to die instead. Given her meteor powers, that is a possibility.
To sum up, Lana is catatonic, Kara is missing, and Brainiac is goth (a seeming nod to James Marsters' previous famous role). I enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next episode in three weeks.

I know they have the "no flying" rule but I was really hoping that we would get a surprise and they'd break that rule today... so sad...
it looks like Lionel might die in the next ep! Too bad, I really like him...

how annoying is Lana? Even when she's in a comatose state, burning her own hand... she's still not sympathetic.

Gotta go with the Lana-please-die brigade. Just how many ways can she die/almost die/be put in danger/put in peril/become evil/become a consciousless avenger scenarios can they do without her becoming a caricature? Oh, we already hit that moment a few seasons ago! Oh well. To all those who love Lana, I apologize. But seriously, if Kristin wants to leave the show anyway, her death could be really good for Clark's development into a superhero. And I'd rather have Lionel there to keep being the mentorish Jor-El, and I'd really hate to loose Chloe - she's terrific.

People, people, people... pleaaaaase.
Can we not go one episode/posting/comment sans the 'Lana is a whiney little rythmes with itch' schtick?
Naaaaaa... me either... obviousely her meteor rock power is the ability to annoy 'Smallville' fans with the sound of her voice. Oh... and evidently (according to the stares Jimmy was giving her) Lois's meteor rock powers are in her boobs. Next time Jimmy... take a picture... oh wait, that would be redundent.
And Brad, if we're handing out 'residuals' how'z bout the family of Christoper Reaves getting some for showing his wheel chair flashback. That was sooo wrong.
Lastly... yeah James Marsters is so goth he poops bats. I got a kick out of the weapon he made from his hands,,, a spike! Sweeet!

I think it's fairly clear that the death is Lionel's. Ausiello clarified that the person dying hasn't been presumed dead by the audience, and Lana has been presumed dead, whereas few thought Lionel was actually dead.
Now, I don't think it's going to be that simple. That is, Lex killing Lionel for the locket. There's bound to be a twist, and my guess is that the twist is Kara (and even this wouldn't really be a twist). But I could see them take it two ways (and obviously, the episode is done so only time will tell)
a) Lionel's usefulness has run its course. Kara is there to help mentor and guide Clark.
b) Kara is turned somehow, probably temporarily, as Laura Vandervoort is signed for next year.
Is there any other possible swerve? I guess maybe Chloe killing Lionel might be an option. Lionel did warn her, but she wouldn't listen. Perhaps a storyline could be that she kills Lionel, letting this new evil come in the finale, or whatever Lionel was talking about. That way, Clark has an 'opponent' next year with Michael going to recurring status.
The only other possible swerve I can think of is Martha coming back, but that would be too much.
I'd still lean the Kara guess over the Chloe swerve.
It seems fairly clear how they'll likely move Kristin and Michael off regular status and onto recurring next year. Lana will probably be moved to some institution for being catatonic, and Lex will probably be on the run for a murder charge, or two, with Lois being the one to expose him, making her the star of the Daily Planet when the new bosses come in and pushing her journalism career forward twofold. We'll probably have snippets of Clark going to see Lana, with perhaps Clark becoming more of a worldview type and chasing after Lex (and perhaps giving them the impetus to let him fly

First of all I have to say, best Lana performance to date, inspired really, why couldn't they have done this is oh...season 1. Also I agree that it's gotta be Lionel to die, going on the spoiler that the person to die has never been presumed dead before.
Little side note, Chloe made a mention of how she had to spend hours at the power company sweet talking an employee to get access to the system.
Overall one of the better episodes this season, and seeing Kara try and boost Clark up...I was always kind of on the fence with Kara, but that put her firmly in my "cool character" side. Also I can't believe there was no mention of Lois "Big Cool Headline Here", sadly my favorite part of the show.

Probably the best Smallville episode in a long time. I'm enjoying the build to Lex's eventual move into the mold of being "the greatest criminal mind of our time." As for the death, it would be too, too obvious for the death to be Lionel Luthor given they gave us that preview of Lionel being tossed out a window. Will this be what makes Clark fly? To save, of all people, Lionel Luthor?!

I found that Kristin Kruek (or however you spell her name) managed an acting tour de force last night. Never has she been more believable as a person who can just take up space on screen and not act. This is her Emmy performance! Brava!!

I don't think that Lionel will die at the hands of Lex, that'd be the easy way out, and a bit too much repetetive, with Lex on the run for the murder of his father, seeing that he was already on the run for Lanas "murder" at the start of this season.
Chloe's also not an option, since it'd contradict her character too much, always trying to help people and even giving her own life.
My guess would be that if Lionel dies (and that's still an "if"), it'll be through the hands of "The Traveler". My guess is, that Lionel was wrong, and that Clark/Kal-El is NOT the Traveler (perhaps another Kryptonian, such as Ursa, or perhaps even Doomsday, which would explain that Veritas "...need to know how to control the Traveler first"). When Lionel confronted Chloe at the Planet he said: "...but none of this matters, because what's coming is so terrible..."

So only one other person noticed Jimmy taking a peak at Lois' tatas?
I though it was going to be the theme for the rest of the show. Too bad.

I didn't see Jimmy peak...missed that.
I thought it funny young Oliver had the play bow and arrow....who hid behind the clock? Was it Oliver...playing on how he hid is green arrow stuff in Metropolis? I don't know the reason we saw Swan peak while counting.
I think Lionel does die...but his body is still the vessel for jor el and so the body survives and no murder charge on lex.
Mayb the rule should be no flying in tights...flying in jeans is ok.

This entire episode was an unmitigated bore, where as usual someone is sacrificed for Lana and someone wants to hurt Lana - and in the end? It's all Clark's fault. Same old, same old recycled, soap opera boring nonsense. Sticking her in a catatonic state in pain and aware of what's going on around her is the *least* this show can do for how much this character has dragged the show down in the dump. And also? The only thing consistent about this purported Lois Lane? Is that she's lucky - lucky to get the right email from an unknown source, lucky that jimmy is more intelligent than her to realize that the locket was the reason Patricia was killed and unbelievably, insanely lucky that Lionel freaking Luthor will convienently leave the biggest clue EVER that leads her to immediately jump to the conclusion that Lex killed Patricia - without having any contact with Lex the entire episode. Yeah, that's some investigative journalist there.
