Dancing With The Stars: Week 2 Results

Steve & Anna - Dancing With The Stars
(S06E04)The votes have been counted and tonight it was time for the first ever double elimination. The new format did change things up, but I think it's for the better. Given the four weeks of training that each of the couples put in before the show begins, it's nice that they all got an extra shot on the dance floor. Filling in the gaps this week were musical guest The Jonas Brothers, and the return of the Macy's Stars of Dance. Were our predictions right? Yes and no. We'll take a look at the hits, and the misses, after the jump.
As is par for the course, Tom and Samantha kicked things off with a recap of performance night. Shannon and Derek were very excited about their performance. Marissa was in a much better mood after judging this week. Monica urged everyone to go out and give dancing a try. Penn and Steve both took their critiques in stride. Adam started making plans for Julianne's 21-run, and pointed out that she didn't need to know math, because she's hot. Marlee was ecstatic about her results, while Priscilla was already trying to apply the judge's advice to next week. Mario thanked Carrie Ann for her kind words. And Kristi thought the dance was a lot of fun.

With that, Tom turned to Len to choose the encore. Len remarked that while they weren't the top couple over the two weeks, last night they were fantastic, before calling out Jason and Edyta to reprise their mambo. I really like that choice. It would have been easy to give it to Kristi and Mark, but I think there will be plenty of opportunities to give Kristi encores. I think Jason has more to gain by being singled out, and I just like it because he is quickly growing on me. Not being a football fan, I wasn't familiar with Jason before the season started, but he's very easy to root for. Their encore was every bit as much fun the second time around.

And then, we were ready for some results, with the men leading off the night. The first couple safe was Steve and Anna! If you listened really close you could almost hear Adam Carolla's publicist shouting "Son of a Mitch." I really wasn't liking Adam's chances at this point, but I might not have been giving enough weight to "other factors." We'll get to that in a bit.

First, it was time for our musical guest. Now, I have to admit, everything I know about the Jonas Brothers, I learned from Rich Keller. I'd never actually even heard them until tonight. They came out to do a cover of A-ha's "Take on Me." I have to say, I don't really understand what all the hubbub is about. It seems like Hanson Redux to me. But that's ok. I'm sure that given a look through my music collection, the average Jonas Brothers fan would be less than impressed as well. Luckily for me, and for any others of you out there that are not under the Jonas spell, they were joined by Tony, Edyta, Jonathan, and Anna. I could have gone for much more of the dancers. They gave a very high energy and fun performance. It was highlighted by both of the men vaulting over the heads of their partners at the end.

Samantha was back stage with the guys, and Steve was surprised, but very excited, to be back. All the guys had great things to say about Steve. Adam called out one of the Jonas Brothers for their bushy eyebrows and declared that Steve is dead to him. It's on. It's not exactly a rivalry for the championship, but it should at least be entertaining.

After a break, Tom and Samantha were back to name two more safe couples. Jason & Edyta will be back next week, and they will be joined by Mario & Karina. No real surprises there. They headed out to get thoughts from the contestants on the double elimination. Of course, nobody wanted to be eliminated. Adam had a good philosophy though. It's like getting fired from any job. The bad news is, no paycheck. The good news is, sleep in on Monday. Monica was worried about being the first one cut. She's not used to that.

Another break and another safe couple. Shockingly, it was Adam & Julianne! That left Penn & Kym and Cristián & Cheryl in the bottom two for the men. Len said that Cristián had the potential to go all the way. Carrie Ann said that they would miss the unexpected fun of Penn if he left. Bruno added that they all love Penn, but there is a lack of dancing talent. In the end, Penn & Kym were sent home. Penn pledged that they were not giving up. He and Kym will be practicing all week and will be back next week, in the parking lot. Kym said Penn was a joy to work with.

The ladies were on the spot next. After another quick recap, the first couple that was safe was Shannon & Derek. Samantha then threw to Cameron Mattheson on the streets of New York to take the pulse of the people. The first woman was happy that Priscilla Presley was on the show, and then she did a funny little hip hop number. The first guy said that Monica Gucci was his favorite??? Jason Taylor got a vote for the hottest guy. And Monica was picked as being able to beat John McEnroe in a fist-fight. They had a little fun with Cristian's name. Adam even got a declaration of love from one of the ladies. Given some of the bits we've seen on the results shows, this wasn't bad. It was a nice departure from the usual audience reactions that we see.

The Macy's Stars Of Dance portion of the program was up next. Jacques Heim created a routine especially for the show. I wasn't familiar with Jacques' work coming into this, but after a bit of digging, it turns out that he has worked with Cirque du Soleil in the past. That makes a lot of sense if you saw the performance because it had a log of Cirque elements in it. The dancers started by coming down the hanging ribbons and dropping from a giant ball. There was a moment when one couple started to spin and just floated up in the air. One girl was tossed in the air for a double flip, sans apparatus. It really was an amazing number. The sheer amount of dancing and stunts going on makes it worth a rewatch.

The Jonas Bros were back with "When You Look Me In The Eyes". Louis and Cheryl were along to dance. Again, it's evident that the Jonas Brothers are not for me. Louis and Cheryl though, they certainly are. As is always the case, the best part of the results show is the pro performances. This one was all too brief, with the Jonas crew commanding much of the camera time, but what we did get from Louis and Cheryl was fantastic. Cheryl has never been my favorite of the pros in the competition, but I do always look forward to her in these performances.

Meanwhile, back at the results, Marlee & Fabian were taken off the block. Joining them in safety were Kristi & Mark. Again, neither of those were much of a surprise. One last break and it was time to eliminate one of the women. Priscilla & Louis were safe, leaving Monica and Marissa in the bottom two.

Carrie Ann said that she loves Monica's never quit attitude. Len said that if Marissa stays she just needs to polish a few rough edges, because she has the performance aspect down. Asked who should go, Bruno said it was a hard one. He said that Monica is a legend, and someone of her stature being on the show is a pleasure. In the end, Monica and Jonathan were sent home. Monica thanked Jonathan and said that she is a huge fan of dance now.

Ok, so there we have it, but just a couple more thoughts before we call it a week. First, given that the other couple in the bottom two is not necessarily the one that got the least votes, as Tom is so fond of reminding us, wasn't it just a little cruel to leave Marissa hanging like that? After how hard she took the results from week one, I would have given her a break and left one of the other girls in the bottom two.

And the other thing, what did you make of the Adam/Steve/Penn decision? As I said earlier, when Steve was pulled off the block, I thought for sure Adam was going home. What I failed to take into consideration was the vote drawing power of Julianne. Is it possible that this decision wasn't so much a decision for Adam over Penn, but more a decision for Julianne over Kym? Whatever the case, it did make for an interesting night. All things considered, with the musical guest, the pro performances, and a very creative Stars of Dance presentation, this was one of the better results shows I've seen.

Our pal Erin will be back next week to cover what promises to be a crazy week three. Until then, be sure to check out AOL's extensive Dancing With The Stars coverage, which includes photo galleries, polls, and a live chat.

Did the Julianne vote save Adam's bacon?
