Oh, the disparity with the television control in my house ... I suffer through Prison Break, Lost (I am probably the only non-fan in America, who cringes at the self-indulgence of the show with the plot that goes nowhere), The Shield and Breaking Bad.But when I want to watch Bones? The moans, the groans, the laptop and the disinterest begin. Why is Bones not allowed in Mantown?
Tell me men, why are you opposed to a show with a strong male lead character, who is well rounded, funny, good-looking, sensitive, somewhat damaged but complex and good at what he does? You surely can't be threatened by a TV character. My husband loved Angel, so why is Boreanaz not getting the love on Bones?
The cases are interesting and complex, the action is fast-paced and there are even some dark and gruesome elements to the killers and even the secrets of the main characters' lives. Isn't this more appealing than cancer?
There are even lighter moments which work when the serial killer stuff gets too heavy. The strange but sweet relationship between Angela and Hodgins, Zack and Dr. Sweets, just quirky enough to keep us smiling.
And why, oh why, would you not want to watch a show with three very attractive women, if simply for the eye candy? Angela and Camille are very attractive, and Brennan is too if you can look past her awkwardness, an important part of her character.
The chemistry and charming banter between Brennan and Booth just adds to the well-rounded tenor of this show. There really is something for everyone.
Let's face it, my husband's manhood was already compromised when he allowed me to watch Grey's Anatomy, so really, would Bones be all that bad?

Well, I can't really explain why Bones doesn't get a thumbs up from the guys, but I can confirm it. I loved Angel as well and tried to give Bones a chance, but it just does nothing for me. I don't think any of the females are attractive and Boreanez tries to hard.
Also, Lost= Greatest show ever! LOL

I love you for it. Lost is a terrible show.
As for Bones I like it. Not exactly must see but still enjoyable.

I can assure you that you are not the only one. We should have a secret handshake, or something.

Oh, Lost was great...for about 8 episodes until JJ Abrams left to oversee Mission Impossible. Now, yep, the plot constantly meanders.

I'm a guy, and I really like Bones. I really didn't like the first few episodes, but got hooked around the 2nd season.
I didn't really know it was shunned in Mantown. So I guess i'm one of the few straight-male viewers of the show. LOL

You wrote that you "suffer" through The Shield. Therefore I cannot actually see the rest of the words that you wrote, as my brain has determined that I need protecting from your words. They are bound to be as utterly nonsensical as the ones disparaging The Shield, which is nature's perfect television show.
I'm only half-kidding. ;)
As for Bones? It left me flat. I've tried three or four times to get into it and it's just...boring.

Ya nobody "suffers" through the Shield. If anything maybe you were in such a state of bliss by being in the presence of perfection that you were lifted out of your body and do not remember how totally perfectly awesome that show is.

Don't blame all guys just because the guys you know are losers. Find some better friends.
I love Bones, great show. I enjoy it a lot more than House is it is probably my favorite show on TV. But what is there to talk about?

I'm a guy and I also really like Bones. Yeah I suppose 0.5 to 1.5% of the total series airtime is related to "relationships" (whether it be family or male-female) and there's always supposed to be an ongoing joke of sorts that Booth and Brennan really, deep down both want to screw each other... no different than House and Cuddy though those two spend less time together. But I don't have a problem with that... and no I'm not gay. Bones is a great show, and I had no idea that it was considered a "girlie" show before now. The dead bodies and putrifaction (gotta love that word) they show are the most disgusting of any show on TV.
They do make Brennan come off a bit super-human at times, which is unnecessary. The fact that she's brilliant and solves all the cases is one thing, but the fact that she is also a super-duper blackbelt and can physically beat up all the big bad guys has always sorta bugged me - it's not believable and it's unnecessary. Maybe this is what guys don't like? It only happens in a few episodes per season, though... not very pervasive.
The other two things I like about the show are:
1. Booth is one of the only cops on TV show actually cares whether or not he has the right (the guilty) person, not just someone who may possibly be guilty because they had motive. Booth always encounters lots of people with motive, yet it's always someone you're not supposed to suspect (at this point I can pick out the murderer as soon as he/she is shown, but I can also pick out the "clue" in "House" that solves the case as soon as it's shown).
2. In most shows, the FBI has universal jurisdiction and can walk in to any crime scene and "take it over" by flashing their FBI badges ("This is OUR crime scene now!"). In reality, there has to be federal jurisdiction of some sort for the FBI to come in (they can always consult if asked by local law enforcement for some help). Bones is the one show that is usually really good about setting out and sometimes even explaining why the FBI has jurisdiction. In the last season this has unfortunately gone by the wayside a little bit, though we can assume if it takes place in Washington DC it is federal. The first season was amazingly adept at setting out Booth's federal jurisdiction for being allowed to investigate whatever crime it was Bones and the Squints were working on.
I can't imagine how someone could like House but not Bones. I think they're a great pairing and have really enjoyed my "Bones-House" nights. In many ways they're very similar shows... both about eccentric geniuses solving tough cases. Any guy who won't watch Bones because he thinks it is "girlie" is a total jackass so uncomfortable with his sexuality that he's the type of guy who fatally beats up homosexuals with baseball and ties them to metal fences, leaving them there to bleed to death... just to prove he's not gay (when in reality, he probably is... but watching a good TV show might make people think he has AIDS or something).

Nothing against Bones, but someone who says that they "suffer" while watching Lost, The Shield, and Breaking Bad, is probably someone who should NOT be writing for a TV site. Actually, I'm impressed you managed to string words together to make sentences.

Wait a minute? You're not ALLOWED to watch Bones? I know a woman who is not allowed to watch any show where she finds the male lead attractive. Yeah, she's in an abusive relationship. Not a physically abuse one, but, a mentally abusive one.
If Hubby doesn't "allow" you to watch Bones, I think you need some serious help.
I think Bones is a great show. One of the few weekly shows I'm willing to watch. I am kind of curious who the attractive females you mentioned are, however.

I agree with Jaymez's comment, your husband should not control what you watch. I understand if he may not want to watch it with you. My fiance and I don't always agree on TV shows, but he never tells me I can't watch something. You should never "suffer" through a show either. If you don't want to watch it leave the room. Also not all men like the same things so to say that Bones isn't allowed in "mantown" also isn't fair.

Wow. I avoid all the shows you listed. Never even seen Bones. It's just another crime scene drama right? I watch enough of those. I don't need another. Or maybe it's that Boreanaz guy. I googled him and saw he was that Angel guy. I wasn't into Buffy and I actively avoided Angel like the plague. Just didn't like most of the actors. Especially Boreanaz.

Do we really need anymore detective shows? I think no one watches Bones because we are all fatigued by every detective show this side of Veronica Mars.
Regardless, what is so bad about being self-indulgence in terms of television? Some of the best shows are self-indulgent (Arrested Development, The Simpsons, etc.). I can understand that some people do not have the patience for how slow the overarching plot of LOST moves, but it is a mystery. What did you expect?

Bones is insulting my intelligence. I dropped CSI: Miami for the same reasons this season. There are some things I simply can't get over - with Bones it was right in the first episode when the modeled the face of the african-american woman over the skull they found so perfectly that they were able to recognize the person.
I had three problems with that scene. First: it takes hours to model a face from a skull, if not weeks, even with a computer. I saw a short documentary about the process where they gave the same exact skull to 24 different forensic teams from all over the world. They ended up with 24 distinctively different looking faces - the result of teams of different race modeling the skull's face after their likeness or after what they thought the person most likely would look. The third problem was the visualization - gimmicky 3D-Animation where out of thin air the face appeared - with Bones just standing in front of the hologram, watching the end result appear.
This showed me three things:
- Bones is not an expert, everything that's so great about her appears out of thin air and is not a result of her hard work (they just said she worked through the night and boy did she look "beat" - perfect makeup, perfekt hair after a 14 hour shift)
- The show is about eye-candy
- The show doesn't expect the audience to think too much
So Bones lost me after 10 minutes of the pilot episode.
CSI: Miami lost me with the episode where they started to use a table where they moved data from electronic devices via putting them on a special table, with the information stored in the devices around them (with a display in the table showing the items). Via gestures, they moved the information from the devices to another, with the table recognizing the things they wanted to do.
They directly took that from a Nokia commercial. Right after that episode they also started using a holographic display that revolved around the user.
To be honest I am all for gimmicks - but either put the show 50 years into the future or use the forensic methods that are available today in a way that is actually believable. The face-forming from a skull was once used in an episode of Law and Order: SVU. The result was some generic looking person because distinct features like freckles can NOT be deduced from a skull - that's so obvious it hurt me physically to see the results they got within seconds in "Bones". I also know that they always get the villain in every episode of CSI - I _know_ that that is totally illogical but it's the exact reason why "Homicide - Life on the streets" for instance is so exceptional - they tell you that only 2 in 3 homicides are solved and even had an episode in the first season where they interviewed a suspected child murderer for a whole episode - without (!) him breaking and confessing.
Sure I can watch shows that don't expect me to think - King of the Hill, Family Guy - also on Fox. But Bones? That show just hurts.
On the other hand I really like Lost because it lets me speculate about things, makes me think about certain aspects of time travel. It's a mystery show and within that aspect all the things I just criticized certainly would be more likely for me to accept - it's a contemporary show but who says that on the special Lost island it would be impossible to have a holographic display I just said I could not accept?
To be honest the answer "why" is simple: Bones is about a person who solves crimes in this day and age - those are the rules.
And ten minutes into the first episode they break their own rules.
So I didn't even get the chance to get into the whole exchange of roles with the girl being the tough one and the guy being girlish. But I guess that would've been the next problem for me. I was a big fan of Angel. Lots and lots of strange things happening there. But that's fantasy and it's allowed there - my problem with Bones then would be that after being Angel for seven years seeing David Boreanaz playing a wimpy whiny fellow just wouldn't be for me.
Oh and shame on you for saying the Shield isn't a good show. That one is just full of testosterone and that's why guys like it - you like Bones because it's full of estrogen I guess ;-)
