The History Channel is going away. The network's name will now simply be History. This move is being done to promote their attempts to move into other forms of media. The network was once dubbed "The Hitler Channel" by some critics due to its overabundance of World War II documentaries. History is apparently following the model of other channels and loosen the central theme of the network.
This follows Jay Black's theory of Channel Drift. I think the History Channel (or whatever it's calling itself) is trying to broaden its audience in an attempt to reap more advertising dollars. It wouldn't surprise me if, in the near future, it began doing reality television shows with a historical theme.
In the end, I don't see this as a good thing for the History Channel. I think it's a move that will alienate its core audience and make it lose what distinguishes it from the competition. And one day, when you're itching to watch a World War II documentary, there will be none available.

they are already showing Axmen and Ice Road Truckers, so they have already started down the reality road.
I do admit that both of these shows are great quaility shows and not the junk that MTV is airing.

Personally, I think that THE HISTORY CHANNEL is making a huge mistake. They're veering too far from what they were intended to be. I don't consider Ice Road Truckers nor Axe Men very historical, and I refuse to watch them. THC has been one of my favorite Channels since it's inception. You'd be surprised how many people in my age-group (mid-late twenties) love and discuss THC shows at work. They're ruining a good channel, just as A&E was ruined and as TV Land was ruined. Whatever happened to quality programming? I actually like to learn when I watch TV. Reality TV is the end of civilization as we know it, and I'm not going to take it anymore.

The History Channel or, "History", is one of my favorites at the moment. It has been drifting for a while, but I think only lately into territory that's making it less of a channel with regards to its original focus. Still, it does not bode well for the future of the channel. Shows like "Ice Road Truckers", "Ax Men" (where's the "e"?) and *gag* "UFO Hunters" have very little to anchor them to tne subject of history, although I suppose something's there, but not much. I guess they have as much history in them as candy has nutrients and I fear that's the overall direction of the channel. I hope I'm wrong, very wrong about that. I'd hate to see one of my favorite channels become not much more than a reality channel with the occasional smattering of historical information.

This sucks. The History Channel has been my favorite Cable channel for the past few years. What would I do without "Modern Marvels"? I suppose this doesn't necessarily mean that Modern Marvels is leaving, but I've noticed a bunch of non-history related stuff lately. All this paranormal crap, UFO crap (ehh they've always had some UFO stuff on there but a lot more of it lately), crytozoology junk (Monster Quest - give me a break!), and psychic crap. The only stuff about psychics I can handle is watching Shawn Spencer do his thing on Psych.
Even if History Channel wants to expend to other stuff (I'm glad they've cut down on the WWII stuff over the past 2 years, I could only take so much Hitler), there's no reason it has to be stupid paranormal pabulum. What kind of retarded marketing people come to the conclusion that the same people who want to watch fact and historical based documentaries also want to watch shows about "investigating" whether paranormal stuff is true? They think the same people who want to watch Modern Marvels want to watch a show about whether Bigfoot really exists? Someone is fucking retarded.
Hopefully the history channel / History / whatever has been ruined as much as it's going to be. If there are any changes beyond what they've already done, they will lose viewers - myself included.

They've already veered away from the programming that made them a destination for a lot of people. I find myself actually watching the channel more noe because of programming like UFO HUNTERS, but it seems odd to watch a show like that on "The History Channel" (even though the cases are based on 'historical documents,' so to speak). This isn't any different from CourtTV becoming truTV, but the worst offender is TV Land, a channel that is supposed to be devoted to "classic" TV shows. Now they show movies and are developing a slate of new reality programming that has nothing to do with classic TV while there is a wealth of classic programming out there that they are ignoring. I watch History Channel more now, but TV Land has lost a faithful viewer.

As others have realized, this isn't much of a change. They're just announcing the changes so people won't think programming is not relevant to their mission. Of course, programming has already made the change, but now they're being open about it.
"What channel has all those WWII documentaries?"
"History"
"Oh yeah, the History Channel."
"Yeah, History."
"The History Channel."
"No, the history channel is history. It is now History"
"So, if somebody asks you what channel you say..."
"The History channel."

Every time I hear about these changes to channels that have Canadian equivalents I am happy to be seeing them instead of the American versions. Our History Channel doesn't feature shows like "Ice Road Truckers" or "Axe Men," and our OLN never became "Versus" and doesn't show hockey (we have enough channels that do that here) but shows about the outdoors that don't involve shooting things. CourtTV Canada never became TruTV, and G4TechTV still shows some programs about technology (though they just canceled "The Lab with Leo Laporte") that G4 has long ago abandoned.

I think that some of the new stuff on History is alright, but I'm sick of all this paranormal shit. It really is useless.
Modern Marvels is always good. I watch that all the time. Maybe it's just more interesting for me because I'm an engineering student.
A while back they had the history of sex, which was really good too. Banned From the Bible was interesting. Given the current global climate, having a general knowledge of other religions might come in handy. Keep the history, cause theres plenty of it out there.
