TV Obits: Minghella, Clarke, Dixon, Williams, Ebbins, Bloom, Smith

Anthony MinghellaA roundup of TV people from in front of the camera and behind the scenes who have passed away.

  • Anthony Minghella: He was best known for his movie work, writing and directing the Oscar-winning film The English Patient, as well as Cold Mountain,Truly, Madly, Deeply, and The Talented Mr. Ripley, but he also wrote for a lot of British television in the 80s and 90s, including several episodes of Inspector Morse and Grange Hill, and he later was a writer for Jim Henson's miniseries The Storyteller. He was also a producing partner of Sydney Pollack, co-producing such films as Michael Clayton and The Interpreter. He had just finished writing and directing the film The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which will debut on BBC1 on March 23. He died of a hemorrhage in London at age 54 after undergoing surgery to remove a growth on his neck.

  • Arthur C. Clarke: Best known as the writer of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, Rendezvous with Rama and many other science fiction novels, short story collections, and non-fiction, he also wrote for television, including episodes of the 80s version of The Twilight Zone, Tales of Tomorrow, and Captain Video, as well as the TV movie The Colours of Infinity. He died in Sri Lanka at the age of 90.

  • Ivan Dixon: He is probably best known for his role as Sgt. Kinchloe on Hogan's Heroes (along with dozens of other roles on TV), but he also directed a lot of television, including episodes of Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap, The Greatest American Hero, The A-Team, Tales of the Gold Monkey, The Rockford Files, Wonder Woman, The Waltons, The Rookies, Quincy, M.E., McCloud, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Starsky & Hutch, Airwolf, and many others. He died of a hemorrhage and kidney problems in Charlotte, NC at age 76.

  • Trevor Williams: He was a designer and art director who worked on several TV shows, including Little House on the Prairie, The Immortal (the 2000 series), Police Academy: The Series, Wide World of Mystery, and Dark Shadows, as well as TV movies such as The Night Stalker, The Night Strangler, The Norliss Tapes, Dracula, Dillinger, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Secrets. He also worked on big screen films: several Police Academy movies, Who's Harry Crumb?, Revenge of the Nerds II, The Amateur, Pretty Baby, and Futureworld. He died of a heart attack in England at age 76.

  • Milton Ebbins: He was a talent manager for several TV stars, including Elizabeth Montgomery, Patty Duke, and Peter Lawford (he was good friends with The Rat Pack). He also produced Lawford's 50s TV series The Thin Man, and was an associate producer on the early 50s series Dear Phoebe. He also managed Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, and Vic Damone. He died in Los Angeles at age 96.

  • J. Michael Bloom: He was also a talent manager and agent, representing many TV stars, voiceover artists, movie stars, and writers. He died of pneumonia at age 68.

  • Charles M. Smith: He was a Vice President at ABC for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He died in Dobbs Ferry, NY at age 85.
