It looks like Kristen Kreuk will only be back for a couple of episodes of Smallville for season eight. She has apparently said something to that effect on her Facebook profile. Between that and the rumors of Michael Rosenbaum not returning, I think season eight will likely be the final season of the show. This means the only regulars from the first season who will be there in the eighth are Clark and Chloe. On a positive note, the whine factor of the show will definitely decline. It could also mean that the inevitable Lois/Clark romance could start up.
I do wonder where they can go with the show without Lana and Lex. It's not really Smallville anymore, is it? A more appropriate name would be Metropolis. They might be saving that for the spin-off, about a group of six twenty-something superheroes sharing two apartments across the hall from each other.

I'd love to see Clark finally moving to Metropolis and start working at the Daily Planet. Lana/Clark relationship has been on/offy for the past season, so I wouldn't mind seeing them finally breaking up for good and him moving on.
They've already moved on from Smallville to Metropolis for most episodes and I don't think that they'd have to change the show's name, everyone will get the reference :)
I don't think it will be that hard to have no Lana around, plot wise, but no Lex around ... that'll be a tough one to fill considering most of the meteor monster episodes are usually connected somehow to Lex's shady dealings and experiments. It's going to be interesting to see if they'll move from the "monster of the week" style episodes to something else or stick with what they've been doing.
We've yet to see Clark really tackle professional life with his superhero life, so that could be another thing they could focus on next year. Him moving from Smallville and get a job in the city and get into the "business of saving lives".

This is good news. Lana as a character has been annoying since day one. It got so irritating I almost gave up on the show a few times. Before she knew Clark's secret most plots were "I'm gonna tell her today!" *crazy dude beats up someone* "I can't tell her because then she'll be in danger!" (Cue WB music of the week.)

who wants to watch siliconed stuffed Lois kissing fat Clark? Lana and Clark sold the series to millions of viewers. Those dvd sales will dry up without the Clark and Lana story line.

Lana is expendable, but Lex is a problem. He could be reduced to a couple of episodes and they could add all the other adversaries but he has to show up now and then. He's Superman's Arch-Nemesis for chrissakes...

This is only good news if it doesn't mean that now we'll get half a season worth of clark sitting around whinning about the loss of lana, looking all sad and depressed.

I knew that eventually sacrificing the goats would get her off the show! I consider it a good investment.

Good bye you won't be missed.
And I think The CW will want a 9th and probably 10th season, they have nothing else. But no one else wants to be on the show. Even the actor who plays Chloe is still in talks to return. It will get harder each passing year and at sometime no one will be back.

Well, consider that Lois frequently calls Clark by the nickname of "Smallville", I imagine the title is more a reflection of Clark, than the town.
Honestly though, I thought this show jumped the shark when they brought Lois in. Isn't it time to pack it in, folks?

In my opinion, they ought to go the One Tree Hill route. Clark has been putting off Jor-El's training for a couple of seasons now, they should end this season with him going off to complete his training, then when the next season starts, a few years have passed, he's completed his training, toured the world, etc, and now he comes back to Metropolis and starts actually becoming Superman. The first part of the season they can cover the awkwardness of being back, then can start bringing in to final pieces towards the end of the season. To me the perfect way to end the show, would be to show him getting in the daily planet elevator, start pulling off his cloths, we see him wearing the costume for the first time (it could have already been introduced, but not with him wearing it) and as he flies up above the Daily Planet buidling, he hovers for a sec, before flying off and the credits roll.

He has to learn to fly first....

That would all be covered in his training, although from what I read on Kryptonsite, he may be trying to learn from his cousin this season

Finally she's been annoying me since she started dating Lex. Lex leaving the show is going to destroy the series (even more than keeping lana has done already). Unless they replace him with Brainiac, the second best villian of the show. Then there may be hope. At this point they need to keep Lionel, Chloe, and increase Lois's screen time. The scene where she just left Oliver and was talking to Clark showed she could act. And she looks alot better than Margot Kidder.

Somebody else mentioned it, but isn't John Glover a veteran of every season so far? There's no news that I know of that he'll leave before season 8, and unless he died in last week's episode (which I haven't watched), he joins Clark and Chloe as being around for the full ride.

What a pity. Without the lovely, talented Kristen Kreuk, "Smallville" will lose it's most interesting character. I will always wish her the best in any future projects. She will do fine with all that talent and beauty.

i think that in the episodes that clark destroys the ship, and when that causes martha to loose her baby, and clark puts on the red kryptonite ring, and move to metropolis, that he is seriously seriously sexy. and i especially love the way his hair looks. so sexy and flippy
