Rob Thomas' Cupid gets a greenlight

jeremy piven; cupidRob Thomas, the creator of Veronica Mars, just got the go-ahead to make a pilot for ABC. His new show is called Cupid, about a guy who believes he's a god sent by Zeus to unite 100 couples.

As many of you probably know, Cupid is actually a throw-back for Thomas-- it's the resurrection of the same series of the same name that lasted 15 episodes on ABC in 1998. The original version starred Jeremy Piven as Cupid (Piven won't be returning to the show). E! network lists the short-lived series as #4 on the list of Top Ten Shows Canceled Before Their Time.

Back in October, when ABC asked for a pilot script from Thomas, he told Variety that he wasn't on a mission to bring Cupid back to life. But his talks with ABC about a new romantic comedy kept coming back to Cupid. So they decided just to bring it back instead of creating something else. But he won't be reinventing it, he says, "What they're buying is the show."

The original series never answered whether Piven's character was cupid or whether he was just nuts (it never intended to, either), but Thomas says there will be a clear answer this time around.

By the way, Thomas is possibly going to be very busy this fall. In addition to Cupid, he's also in talks with The CW and CBS about writing a spinoff of 90210.
