Rob Thomas, the creator of Veronica Mars, just got the go-ahead to make a pilot for ABC. His new show is called Cupid, about a guy who believes he's a god sent by Zeus to unite 100 couples. As many of you probably know, Cupid is actually a throw-back for Thomas-- it's the resurrection of the same series of the same name that lasted 15 episodes on ABC in 1998. The original version starred Jeremy Piven as Cupid (Piven won't be returning to the show). E! network lists the short-lived series as #4 on the list of Top Ten Shows Canceled Before Their Time.
Back in October, when ABC asked for a pilot script from Thomas, he told Variety that he wasn't on a mission to bring Cupid back to life. But his talks with ABC about a new romantic comedy kept coming back to Cupid. So they decided just to bring it back instead of creating something else. But he won't be reinventing it, he says, "What they're buying is the show."
The original series never answered whether Piven's character was cupid or whether he was just nuts (it never intended to, either), but Thomas says there will be a clear answer this time around.

due to the strikes residue im out of tv so i've been hitting the wayback machine for old tv shows. a couple weeks ago i watched the entire season of cupid and i liked it. it was an interesting way to cast a show - only 3 actual main characters and a bunch of random extras and semi-regulars.
my favorite part is that it was filmed exactly where i live/work (wacker drive between michigan and state in chicago) but it will certainly be lacking without piven.

Is it really smart bringing back the same show to the same network 10 years later?
Try new things already.

I rather have shows come back from decades ago because the new age will bring something new to a series.

One of the articles this links to says this will be a reinvention.
"Thomas has described "Cupid" as a "reinvention" of his praised but short-lived 1998 ABC comedy series of the same name about a man who thinks he's a god sent to Earth by Zeus to unite 100 romantically challenged couples."
Which is it? In the past, TVSquad said the setting and quite a few other things would be different.

I actually watched this show and loved it, so I for one am excited to see it. Remember, some good shows get cancelled too soon, and some bad ones linger on too long.

Are you sure that's not a picture of GOB?

I thought the same thing, which would also be an awesome casting move.

Piven made that show watchable. Without him, it's already doomed.

I always thought I was the only one who remembered this show.
Great stuff, I don't know if it'll have the same energy without Piven.

I first found TVSquad because of Cupid. Didn't comment until years later when another Cupid post appeared.
