In case you were tuning in to Saturday Night Live this weekend for the music and not the...ahem...comedy, there's been a change in the schedule. Janet Jackson is evidently ill and has canceled her appearance. She spent some time at Cedars Sinai hospital earlier this week due to a particularly nasty case of the flu. Mariah Carey will take her place. This makes me wonder whether people tune in to SNL for the musical acts. I have to admit that I usually fast-forward through the musical performances. Maybe there is something about the sound on that stage, but performers rarely sound good. Or maybe it's just the performers themselves who only sound good on an album. I think I've tuned in to SNL to see Barenaked Ladies perform and that's about it. Oh, and Beck is always pretty rad when he's on.
Does anybody watch SNL just for the music?

The music is the only thing to watch. SNL hasn't been funny in years.

It hasn't been funny since Wayne and Garth left. When was that? 1993?

SNL has always been able to draw me in by the musical acts. I've watched the last two weeks just to see Wilco and Vampire Weekend. And growing up before the internet SNL was the place I would look to catch new acts.

Unless it's Craig David, or Corinne Bailey Rae, I fast forward through the music performances.

I fast-forward through the musical acts, too. But that is partly because I'm an old fogey who doesn't quite get the music you kids listen to these days.

We tivo and always zip right on past the musical acts. Could be someone we like, we still don't bother. We probably fast forward over half the skits too...

I rarely watch SNL anymore, other than maybe short snipets they have online. As far as music, it was my least favorite portion of the show outside of the opening monologue

I normally turn or fast-forward during the music, but every now and then they have somebody I like or it's just a good performance. Kanye West was one of those performances that was just a good performance so I watched it all. I also remember being home and wondering what was going on when Ashlee Simpson was first on...

SNL sucks lately. The skits aren't funny! The players aren't funny and memorable like in the past ,who were household names. The music just isn't that good anymore either. Don't they have the hot bands on like they used to in the past? Or are there just NO good bands anymore? Before there were bands that everyone knew, now it's "Who the hell are these people?" Once in a while they pick a good guest host that I will tune in for, but after the monologue I go to bed or change the channel! Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon were the last good players on the show. SNL...R.I.P. 1975-2005

Well I hate to break it to you guys, but if you don't realize that all the bands that have played on SNL the last two years ARE the HOT bands, you just don't know who the hot bands are. Wilco, Arcade Fire, Spoon, Feist, Vampire Weekend, Kanye, Foo, Bjork, the Shins.....are you kidding me? Do yourself a favor and actually watch the performances, it might make you a bit more cool with your kids...

Most of the musical acts of the last few years are a blur. A few stand-outs ...
The Shins
Queens of the Stone Age (with a cameo by Gene Frenkel)
U2, of course!
Beck (with the puppets)
Ashley Simpson -- ha!
Those are just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.
Oh, and I absolutely love the Jack Black episode with Neil Young!

Did you just say you tuned in to watch Barenaked Ladies? Really? Was that just a bad joke?
As far as the music part of SNL goes, they have always had great music with some (at the time)popular acts sprinkled in.
The reason some bands sound crappy is because they are playing live (and sometimes they aren't good musicians). But Wilco and Vampire Weekend were REALLY good. You missed out if you didn't watch them.

Yeah, I ignore the musical acts. They're not entertaining. They need to get the crowd involved.
