America's Next Top Model: New York City, Here We Come

Dominique puling back her hair.
(S10E02) I'm still a bit shocked that Tyra went through all the trouble of opening up the competition to 14 girls this season and out of everyone she could have selected, she went with Dominique.

I mean, I admit that Dominique is a little bit exotic looking, but so were the baboons I saw the last time I went to the zoo. Umm, that came out wrong. That was horribly insulting to all the innocent baboons of the world. I take it back.

I kid, I kid. Dominique isn't that unattractive, I just don't think she was the right choice for this competition. It almost seems like the only reason she's there is so the judges can crack drag queen jokes about her all episode long.

And that's pretty much what Jay and Paulina did through the whole episode. I just don't get it.

Anyhow, the girls made their way to New York and the pad they are living in is gorgeous. However, there's a catch. The sleeping arrangements are far from ideal. There's one room with two to three bunk beds and there's another room with a single ginormous bed where the girls who don't get a bunk are going to have to sleep. I'm not sure what the producers of America's Next Top Model are shooting for with the bed situation, but I do hope they take lots of footage because there is sure to be some drama.

Let's talk about Amis for a moment.

Amis is adorable.

I find her absolutely adorable so it irritated me a bit when Fatima started going off on her about talking all the time and and not making any sense. She went so far as to say that people might think she's a little off if she continues to act that way. First off, Amis is already off. She'd be the first to admit that to you. Secondly, what the crap is Fatima's problem?

After my first review, I'm pretty sure I promised not to talk crap about Fatima all season since she'd gone through unimaginable suffering with the whole female mutilation thing. Does anyone have a problem if I renege on that promise?

Fatima just sucks plain and simple. I think a little bit of assertiveness is attractive. I'd even consider it a necessity in anyone I considered to be my lady, but Fatima is assertive and confrontational to a fault. She just can't help herself from starting crap with the other girls in the house. The comments to Amis were just a start. She also ended up "accidentally" smacking Marvita in the face later in the episode. I can't wait until they get rid of this one.

The Jays make an appearance.

The Jays came to the house pretty early on and let the girls know they'd be escorting them around New York City. Later on, as the group made their way to Times Square, we learned there was going to be an impromptu runway show where the girls would sport designs from Badgley Mischka.

Marvita walked the runway like she'd just been reprimanded for having a strange haircut. She looked down at her feet nearly the entire way. I didn't expect that kind of a performance from Marvita. She seems so confident most of the time.

On the other hand, 18-year-young Atalya walked the runway with loads of confidence. I really thought she showed a lot of poise being so young. She seemed like a natural walking in front of the crowd.

Whitney on the runway.

However, if I had to pick the party who did the best (within the short snippets of frame we actually got to see), I'd think Whitney had the best performance. Aside from being nice to look at, she's got a swagger about her that I'm attracted to. I see her going pretty far in this competition, plus-sized and all.

Paulina makes her Top Model debut.

Next, the girls took a trip to Elite Model Management where they got an honest opinion on their potential in the harsh modeling industry. The person giving the opinion was none other than new judge, Paulina Porizkova who happens to be a legendary supermodel as indicated in the screencap above. I'm embarrassed to say, I've never heard of her before I learned she was going to be the judge replacing Twiggy.

Paulina basically came out and ripped the girls from the get go. Here's what we got to hear her say:

Amis - "You have bad skin."
Dominique - "You look like a transvestite version of actress Robin Wright Penn." (ouch)
Kim - "You look very high school musical like."
Marvita - "You've got a slightly smooshed face."

Wow, Paulina is a bi-otch. I love her already!

Tonight's photo shoot was an attempt to put a spotlight on the homeless youth problem running rampant in our society. That's what Jay Manuel said the shoot was about anyways. I personally thought the shoot seemed more about putting pretty girls in outfits that only halfway looked like they would be worn by a homeless person. Most of the homeless get-ups looked like the trendy stuff I see people wear on a normal basis.

Allison at the homeless shoot.

Most of the shots looked like the one I snapped of Allison above. None of the girls really stood out to me. For some reason, I found this shoot on the boring side. It didn't really do all that much for me.

The Order of the Photos:

Umm, before we get to the order of the photos, Kim decided to let the panel know that she wasn't really into the whole high fashion thing...Tyra offered to send her home and Kim happily obliged.

Kim isn't really into fashion.

Even though Kim 86'd herself from the competition, there was still an elimination. Now, let's really get to the order of the photos and see who got sent home.

Anya
Claire
Whitney
Lauren
Aimee
Fatima
Marvita
Katarzyna
Stacy Ann
Dominique
Allison

That left Atalya and my girl Amis in the bottom two with Atalya ultimately getting gone. I guess my assessment of Atalya's presence on the runway earlier was way off the mark. I've said it once and I'll say it again--I'm an idiot.

The gallery will be updated as soon as The CW uploads the latest pictures. Be sure to come back by for a look at some Top Model mediocrity. See you in a week.

What'd you think of the way Kim left the competition?
