AI OD: A farewell to Colton Berry - VIDEOS

Now that his journey on American Idol is over, he isn't going to just head back home and sulk. In AOL's interview with Colton Berry, the young singer admitted that being on the number-one rated singing competition was but one of his dreams. The other was to be on Broadway, and more specifically to perform as Fiero in Wicked.

Considering how Simon derided him constantly for his overly theatrical performances, Broadway could be a perfect fit. It's certainly given success to plenty of other Idol alums including Frenchie Davis, Fantasia, Clay Aiken, Tamyra Gray and Diana DeGarmo. And it's not like Colton doesn't have a theatrical background. The question is, did he resonate enough with America and potential employers in his short stint on the Idol?

Almost before he could even get a chance to settle in and find his groove, Colton's journey on American Idol came to an end after just one week in the competition. He was a virtual unknown even going into this week, which is a huge hurdle in this half-singing competition, half glorified popularity contest, and it proved a hurdle to big for him to surmount.:

His Top 12 Boys performance of "Suspicious Minds" wasn't bad, but it's always risky to take on Elvis Presley or any of this singular artists. It didn't resonate particularly well with the judges, though I thought he put a nice spin on it. Colton has a good voice, he just didn't have enough personality sparkle to remain memorable. He may have said it best in his post-elimination interview when he said, "People just voted for their favorites and they weren't really familiar with me. They hadn't seen much of me before. I don't think it was that people wanted me off the show. I think it was just the fact that not many people knew what they were gonna get out of me.":

Here's one of Colton's most memorable moments. Ryan, acknowledging that Colton had gotten royally screwed in air time minutes up to that point, asked him, "What would you like people to know about you?":

This was really our first real screen time with Colton, going in as one of the two last boys next to aspiring politician Kyle Ensley. Kyle, on the other hand, had tons of screen time in both his initial audition and the Hollywood show. Ultimately, I wonder if they made the right decision as I think Kyle would have resonated more with the audience. Simon certainly thought Kyle should have gotten through, and I have to agree considering some of what we've seen from the guys. That said, they didn't show us much of what Colton could do so I'm basing that on really one performance.:

Colton with Waynesboro PlayersColton, unlike Amy and Joanne and plenty of other contestants, didn't have a history of modeling or television work that could be splashed all over the internet to raise his profile. Of course, he's just a kid still so how would he. His work has been primarily in live theater, including work with the Waynseboro Players where he appeared in their 2007 production of "A Funny Think Happened on the Way to the Forum." So he has the pedigree to make a run for Broadway, but one week on American Idol may not be enough. In the end, might just be remembered as the guy who said he looked like Ellen DeGeneres.

Colton was the last of the first four cut from Idol in the first week. As such, the packaged American Idol goodbye video was made for all four eliminated contestants combined: Garrett Haley, Amy Davis, Joanne Borgella and Colton Berry. Goodbye guys and the best of luck to all of you!:
