In case you've been in a coma or off the grid for the past six months, you probably know that Jon Stewart hosted the Oscars on Sunday night. He played host once before, but the performance wasn't too warmly received. This time, I personally felt he did much better and looked more confident. One great Jon moment was when he let Once song winner Marketa Irglova come back onstage to give a quick (and heartfelt) acceptance speech because the music completely cut her off before she could start the first time."Hooray for Oscarwood!": Senior Hollywood Correspondent John Oliver reported from post-Oscar LA to share the area's thoughts about Jon's performance. All the Jon-bashing was fantastic and beautifully executed, with plenty of mentions of Jon's improved performance and the show's outrageously low ratings. I'm still kicking myself for not going to John Oliver's Comedy Central taping on Wednesday, by the way. Hopefully I'll get to see him when Oliver performs in NYC on the 3rd.
"Indecision 2008": Ah, what a surprise. Daily Show audiences freakin' love Barack Obama. As for Hillary Clinton, she's been really pissed at the kid. I mean, "Karl Rove's playbook"? Ouch, Clinton! As if Obama hasn't already gotten enough crap lately for that turban photo, which (was meant to be) a bit incriminating and terribly unflattering. I should also note that Jon's equal jabs at Clinton and Obama did not go unappreciated.
The night's guest was Madeleine Albright, promoting Memo to the President Elect: How We Can Restore America's Reputation and Leadership. The book's Amazon reviews really aren't doing so hot, are they? Even the Albright lovers haven't jumped to her defense yet. Anyway, she started off the interview with a light-hearted Oscar joke, but it didn't take long for Jon to steer her into more serious topics, including her stance on foreign policy and the upcoming election. Unsurprisingly, Albright is a supporter of Hillary Clinton, even though she's enough of a hardcore Democrat to accept Barack Obama just because of his party. It's been a while since I've seen Albright in an interview, so I guess I forgot how casually vocal she is. It sounded like she was just openly ranting to Jon like an old buddy, which can be good, I suppose.
Jon/Stephen: A toss! And a Stephen wink!. Moment of Zen: Nothing says unity like the New York Philharmonic and orderly North Korean soldiers.

Annie, you should definitely go see Oliver live if you can. I saw him last week at Symphony Space and he was spectacularly funny and good-natured. He's also pretty damn attractive in person--he tends to look kind of weedy on the Daily Show.
