Showtime pilot for Edie Falco

Edie FalcoIf you've watched 30 Rock this past season, you've seen how funny actress Edie Falco can be. As C.C. (Celeste Cunningham), she's been a hoot opposite Alec Baldwin. Well, Showtime noticed, and they announced today that the three-time Emmy-winner, best known as Carmela on The Sopranos, will star in a new show for their network. She'll be playing a "strong-willed, iconoclastic New York City nurse juggling the frenzied grind of an urban hospital and an equally challenging personal life" is the 30-minute, single camera, dark comedy.

The Showtime and Lionsgate Television co-production will be filmed in New York (just like The Sopranos). According to Edie, coming back to series TV was all about the quality of the project. "The challenge has been finding something else that would excite me. This character and the writing are truly thrilling," said Falco. Her character is described as "an indomitable nurse with a special calling who doesn't hesitate to challenge her superiors – and the often untenable status quo – by taking matters into her own hands in order to save lives. While brilliantly in control on the job, her personal life is precarious, unpredictable, and demanding in ways that she is surprisingly not always prepared for."

The pilot was written by Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem (The Comeback, That '70's Show) and Evan Dunsky. Wallem and Brixius are the executive producers and show runners. Richie Jackson will serve as co-executive producer. Caryn Mandabach is also executive producer

If this formula reminds you of Weeds, that's absolutely intentional. That show is also a Showtime/Lionsgate series about a dynamic, but screwed-up lady, played by an award-winning star. In Weeds' case, it's Mary-Louise Parker.
