Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse recently sat down with EW's Jeff Jensen to answer questions, address rumors, and provide some mild spoilers about the show. The interview shed light on some of the questions that viewers had after watching last week's episode, "The Economist." Lindelof and Cuse also hinted at which questions will be explored and answered during Season Four.
They also discuss some spoilers concerning this season, so if you aren't caught up with the show or don't want to be spoiled, stop reading. Here are the highlights of Jensen's interview:
-
Ben could be one of the Oceanic Six. He had tons of fake passports and information on the passengers, so he could have stolen a dead passenger's identity.
- We will know the identities of all the members of the Oceanic Six by the seventh episode.
- Naomi's bracelet in "The Economist" was not the same bracelet as the one worn by Elsa in Sayid's flash-forward. It was meant to remind Sayid of Naomi, not connect Naomi to Elsa.
- Some fans thought that Sayid's flash-forward on the golf course happened after his flash-forward with Elsa. This is not the case; the flash-forward scenes are shown in chronological order.
- Viewers also had questions about Frank and Jack's conversation about the Red Sox winning the World Series. Damon Lindelof said that the scene was written for Lost's present time, not for 2008.
- The flash-forwards are not alternate realities or possible futures. The future for the Oceanic Six is exactly as you see it.
- Lindelof and Cuse admit to being "pro time-space continuum" but "anti-paradox."
- According to Cuse, the fifth episode "deals with time travel."
- The writers have a "master timeline" that ranges from the time that the Six leave the island to the final flash-forward. Cuse said that creating this was difficult, due to fact that "time isn't entirely linear."
- For Cuse and Lindelof, the major themes and questions of the show include the 815ers' relationships with the Freighter folk, who was in the coffin in Jack's flash-forward, and what happened to those that didn't get off the island.
- The identity of the person whose eyeball appeared in Jacob's cabin is an important detail.
- The Orchid station video is also significant to this season.
- Ben's hit list has something to do with the 815 wreckage that was found in the Sunda Trench.
For me, the most interesting idea was that Ben could be one of the Oceanic Six. He certainly has the resources to take on a false identity. Even Kate tried to doctor Joanna's passport back in Season One. I'm also glad that details like Naomi's bracelet and the flash-forward timeline were covered. Cuse and Lindelof are usually so careful about releasing information, and I enjoyed reading some straight answers to common fan questions. I'm not sure I prefer the term "Freighter folk" to "Freighties," but it's their show. Freighter folk it is!

Ben could be one of the Six? So is the previous information released about who the Oceanic Six false? Or is this just standard misdirection by the producers.

I think it's the normal misdirection, but I guess we will see.
And the Red Sox thing is obvious about the 2004 "present" time line. If it didn't then Jack

They are currently showing Season 4 so you don't have to imagine it.

They almost lost me during last season.
Having a deadline really helped the show.

Same here. I lot of season 2 and the first half of season 3 were rather blah and bad. Now they have a game plan and they are doing a great job.

Going out on a limb to say that we've already seen the final flash forward for the whole series at the end of season 3. It would make perfect sense as Jack finally realized they never should have left.
It's been done before also. I'm thinking of B5 when Sheridan was jumped forward 20 years and saw the outcome of the Alliance v Centauri war around the middle of season 3 also.

You are wrong.
First of all as stated above: the flash forwards are happening in a chronological order. Second of all if you were watching closely (and I for one am just watching every episode ONE time) Kate mentioned in THAT specific flash-forward that she had to go because "He's sleeping". If you watched yesterday's episode you now know who "he" is. It's Aaron, Claire's son. The emotional connection between Kate, Jack and Aaron? Jack knows that Claire is (or maybe even was?) his half-sister and that he isn't Kate's son.
Now if they didn't jump in time and judging from the boy speaking and his size I guess he's at least two years old if not three, meaning that the flash forward happens at least that timeframe AFTER what we see happening on he island. That's HUGE if you ask me.
Now, knowing that the people who came back are: Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Aaron and Ben doesn't that mean we already know who the Oceanic Six are?
But Cuse/Lindelof said that we would know who they are by episode five. So I think that the only possible explanation is that the person in the coffin in the season 3 finale is number six and that Ben got off the island not being considered one of the Oceanic Six. So he doesn't need any cover-up.

I'm desperately hoping that answers to where the hell the island is, what the hell the true purposes of the island and Dharma are, and what the hell the smoke monster is will all be answered along the way.

I always sensed we would never had satisfying answers for those why questions.
And that we would be given more details about the pursuit of happiness of the main characters post island.

If you read the actual interview, they're talking about season four in general.

I see. The way the statement was worded made me think they meant those were the primary storylines for the remainder of the show, not this season.

Bash, you are wrong. They said we would know the six by episode seven.
Anyway, I have always thought it was Micheal in the coffin but now i suspect that the coffin is empty and the reason Kate did not go to the funeral is because she knows the person the funeral is for is not really dead. They are still on the island.
I think the people Ben is having killed are the ones who might have the technology or information on the location of the island and Sayeed is doing it to protect not the Oceanic Six but those who stayed behind

whoops mixed that up with what episode five deals with.
Sorry.
I guess this is also why they make the cut after episode seven and wait for the new episodes to be produced before showing episode 8 and the new ones in succession.
And I myself still think the person in the coffin is number six.

Bash: "You are wrong. First of all as stated above: the flash forwards are happening in a chronological order."
I think you misunderstood that part. He meant that the flashforwards within that particular episode happened chronologically, not the flashforwards from one episode to the next. For example, in S4E1, Jack said he was thinking about growing a beard. That is, the beard that he was wearing in the S3 finale, suggesting that S4 premier flashforward took place before the S3 finale flashforward.
