Obviously I'm not going to go into an entire review of this episode of Dexter, as we've already done that once during the show's premiere on Showtime. Also, I gave my thoughts on the CBS version of the series last week. However, I do want to open up a post for newcomers to the series to discuss their thoughts.I have to wonder if this move by CBS will result in more subscriptions to Showtime once viewers have been hooked, bought the season one and two DVDs and have caught up with things before the show picks up again later this year (I think).
Are you going to keep tuning in? Were you as blown away by the series premiere as we were? Let yourself be heard in the comments.

I don't have Showtime and I'm not gonna subscribe for ONE show. A buddy loaned me his recordings of the show and I love it, but no show is worth the cost of subscription. Hell I pay too much for crappy cable now.
I don't plan on watching the CBS version, but I'll gladly continue to leech off my bud.

I just happened to flip through the channels and found myself utterly transfixed by Dexter. Wow, i can understand why silly parent watch groups would want to limit this show, but it is freakin awesome. a new show for me to look forward to besides lost and robot chicken!
i haven't watched any of the other dexter shows seeing that i would have to pay for showtime, but i see little correlation between dexter's thoughts, and his actions. just a little acting thing, but i also may be missing something that will hit me later. I am also happy that this show does have distinct differences from the common crime show that set it above the rest, such as a character with demons that are so extreme, that respective characters on other shows appear bland and contrived. KEEP THE SHOW ON CBS, lord knows you need better shows.

That's because Dexter has to hide himself away from the world. We see some of the problems associated with that in the first season and during much of the second season. It's really a key fact. Dexter can only be himself in his head and when he's about to kill one of his victims. Even a wry smile could make people suspicious, so he's extremely careful. Keep watching and you'll come to understand it much better than I could ever explain it.

I think Weeds would work well for a filler show. There is some sex and swearing, but it's not over the top (like in Calaforniaction), and could work well.

i LOVED it, the narration with Dexter's flat affect, the screwy love interest, the foster father with the dark secrets, his fascination with other serial killer's techniques, the whole magilla!
I will watch EVERY week, at last, something on Sunday night, if it wasn't for Amazing Race, adn now Dexter, Sunday would be a good night to go to bed right after 60 Minutes.

The Dexter "premiere" was absolutely fantastic. I've been hearing about it for ages and was quite excited to hear about CBS broadcasting it. I cannot recall the last time I was transfixed by a drama so immediately. I had all sorts of questions (which I asked my sister sitting nearby, who had just as many answers as I did and was therefore simply annoyed), all of which were artfully answered within minutes. Unfortunately, being a college student, I won't be subscribing to Showtime, but I'll probably rent the DVDs when I have some free time. Until then, on Sunday nights I'll continue pretending to do homework while actually watching CBS!

I started watching this show on Netflix a couple of months ago, when I heard CBS was going to edit out the language and shove in all the commercial breaks. It's fantastic! I'm halfway through Season 1 now, and SO glad I went the Netflix route instead of watching it chopped up and covered with onscreen graphic bugs on broadcast TV. I just hope the 2nd season DVDs come out soon!

The good thing about Dexter, from a CBS point of view, is that there is not much that needs to be edited out from a content point of view. The vast majority of edits are for time. (CBS surprisingly aired 49 minutes last night, far more than I expected. I am not sure how long the pilot was originally, but it can't have been more than 55 or 56 minutes).

I completely agree that the show just isn't the same on CBS as it is uncensored. You can't even really know some of the characters' full personalities without the language...like Deb or Sgt. Doakes.

What is so twisted about this show? I'll grant you that it is certainly darker than the typical network show, and about to get darker yet, but the characters, actors, writing, etc. are so much better than anything you are ever going to see on network TV. It is no more demented than the human soul, and far more redeeming besides.

Joey, Acting is good, but not any better than other shows. Writing ingenious and diffiently thought provoking. Let's make the hero use his evil , bad side for good. Why don't we all just go with it.

I agree with most everyone else, I loved it! Not having Showtime, this is my first time seeing it and I thought it was great. I look forward to it, and the bonus for us first-timers is, we know it won't be cancelled after 3 episodes! We are spared getting into a "new" show and then having it pulled from us. I'm not big on getting a whole season of shows to watch on dvd, I never seem to have enough time to get thru very many. So, I really like having a new show to look forward to, especiallly a show I've heard so much about. There have been so other shows that everyone else seemed to love, that when I got to see them, I was disappointed. I won't mention names, so not to start an argument. I was afraid this might be the case with Dex, but lucky for me, everyone was right about it. Good move on CBS's part.

So how did they deal with the language in the CBS version, particularly Deb, Dexter's sister? I can see cutting some of the more graphic violence but every other word out of her mouth was "f---," so I wonder if they beeped it or dubbed it. Was it very noticeable?

Liz: Liberal use of "frickin" edited nicely to fit her mouth movements. Less believable (and much sillier) was Doaks calling Dexter a "motherlover" - I just had to laugh at that.
Other than that it's mostly the same. The killing scenes weren't as drawn out, and my GF wasn't turned off by it like she was by the same episode 2 years ago on Showtime.
