This one belongs in the "You've Got To Be Kidding Me" file.
This weekend, TV Land has an event devoted to movies (Footloose, Flashdance, Say Anything, etc) and trivia from the 1980s. They were going to call it "OhMyGod, That's So 80s," but after a protest from the American Family Association, they've changed it to OhMyGosh. The AFA issued a press release saying (among other things) that TV Land "easily disrespects Christians" and viewers should send e-mails to network President Larry Jones to protest.
I guess no one in that group was alive during the late 70s and 80s.
Here's what they should have done: since it was an 80s-themed weekend, they should have just changed the name to the "Like, OhMyGawd, That's So 80s." That's how it was spelled back then, if I remember correctly. Not that the AFA would have liked this either, but at least TV Land would have had a better argument. Actually, I wonder why that wasn't the title used in the first place. I mean, OhMyGosh doesn't even make sense, unless they're doing a 50s weekend.

We should get mad at TV Land for even coming up with the idea. TV Land is supposed to be the channel we go to for classic TV, not movies.
If they wanted to show movies, why not all of those made for TV movies of the week from back in the 70s? And why not provide a home for all of the mini-series from back then too?
They probably could have done this theme without resorting to theatrical releases. But then, they've lost their focus just like A&E and AMC have done over the years.....

I completely agree with you about TVLAND.They have pretty much destroyed this Network with all this new stuff they are doing .It is a great idea about showing made for TV movies from the 70s and 80s.(Matter of fact I had to find an old TV movie over the internet called "Heatwave" that was searching for years for ,eventually found a copy in England)If they could show some of these movies and series on TVLAND it would be true to the original idea of what TVLAND is supposed to be.Great request Tele-Toby

Besides the obvious stupidity of the protest, why is it that God is only associated with Christians? There are other religions, you know. Some even with the same basic concepts.
Perhaps in the eyes of the AFA, Christianity is the only "valid" religion. Prejudiced cretins.

Just an FYI: They are still running promos on the network in which they use the word "OhMiGod," so it's not clear if they are going to change it. They have, however, changed it online, as well as removed an online ad that was playing.

We should all rush out and pick up Rhino's 7-CD boxed set, "Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally)". I got mine a few weeks ago.

Ridiculous. More of the "war on Christians". What a poor, persecuted group of religious nuts these AFA people are. Too bad their "faith" is so fragile that something as harmless as this can damage it.
(NOTE: I'm referring to the AFA people, NOT all Christians or religious people.)

I'm constantly amazed that people scream "hate crime" whenever anybody uses a word that people find slightly offensive. Yet when it comes to Christianity people are supposed to look the other way and let them take the name of the Lord in vain and just brush it off.

First of all, you do know what a hate crime is, right? What you described is what as known as being politically correct. Second of all, Christians have no special ownership or domain over the word "God". It was used before the first tenets of Christianity were being thought up in Jesus' head, and will be around long after the last Christian is dust.
Jesus H. Fucking Christ, people need to get a grip once in a while.

If using the word "God" is a hate crime, then nothing is a hate crime.
And since when were we talking about hate crimes?

I suppose it is the idea of "taking the Lord's name in vain" that gets them. There are people who habitually write G-d to avoid that. Of course that totally ignores the fact that "God" isn't God's name - per the Bible the name is unpronounceable - and that we capitalize it solely because Christians and Jews are monotheistic religions for which there is only one God (Islam names God Allah but are just as touchy about it). You'd never hear this sort of protest from Hindus.

I think the AFA is really a "liberal communist" group who's goal is to use reverse pyshcology to bring people to athiesm! Cause they aren't doing anything good for Christianity that's for sure.
