ABC decided to use the expected end of the writers' strike to announce the renewal of nine shows for the 2008-09 season. The list of returning series are mostly those you'd expect to see: Grey's Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and Lost are the veteran shows on the list, joined by rookie shows Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who?, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money. Unchanged is the speculation that most of the newer shows won't have a spring return, as ABC will hold them for a more publicized fall re-launch.The only show on the above list that I'm surprised got such an early commitment to a second season was Dirty Sexy Money. The other shows got either decent ratings or enough buzz to keep them on the air post-strike, but DSM was flying under the radar for most of the time it was on. I guess the demographics were strong enough for ABC to give the show another shot. Still up in the air, by the way, is the fate of the less-well-received shows on the ABC schedule. So, for the two of you who are missing the hell out of Cavemen, you'll just have to wait.

Oreo, there's been no word on the other shows. I can't see any reason why BL *wouldn't* be renewed.

I can think of a few reasons. ABC hates Boston Legal, they never show a single ad for it, it's not even online in their viewing area.
And they list 9 shows, most were common sense, but none of them are Boston Legal? Dirty Sexy Money is on the list but Boston Legal isn't, this is how ABC treats the show and it wouldn't shock me if it were canceled.

Beside Pushing Daisies, the rest of the shows are all produced by ABC Studios, so maybe that's the reason for the quick pickups. Other shows that are not produced in-house (such as 20th Century Fox's Boston Legal) usually don't get renew this early. Last year BL was renewed pretty late, so I'm sure it'll be back (if the ratings don't suck too much.)
Not a big surprise to see Dirty Sexy Money being renewed though, the show has consistent rating and a good critical buzz, also it fits really well with rest of ABC's shows. Boston Legal, however, has aged quiet a bit this season, and i still get why they changed the cast so much this year (bring back Julie Bowen and drop Saffron Burrows!)

Given the way that ABC has treated "Men in Trees" this season, I'm surprised your girlfriend isn't already pissed. They've treated that show shamefully.

I love October Road - wish it would be renewed already - at least or another 13 episode season. They need to resolve the paternity of Sam before they hang up the boots.

Glad to Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money. DSM may have flown under the radar, but it has a lot of potential and I really enjoyed watching this crazy family. I'm also worried about Boston Legal, but let's face it, BL has not been that great this season, and it's never been a favorite of ABC.

I'd rather see Boston Legal. It's a blast to watch, it always makes me laugh. It's a show that makes you think too and we need more shows like that. You can't always have dumb ass shows on ABC with T & A...

I am thrilled that Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money are coming back. Easily my two favorite new shows this season. Third would be Chuck, I suppose. I really love Dirty Sexy Money though. I sort of caught the pilot by accident and watched every episode since.

OK. One show is not on this list and it doesn't make sense.
ABC, what about Women's Murder Club?
You've got the #1 rated show on Fridays at 9 in its timeslot. It has been every week it aired. It gets better OVERALL numbers than Moonlight and Friday Night Lights. And you're thinking of CANCELING?
Memo to ABC: YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET THE DEMOS ON FRIDAY NIGHT. People 18-49 are mostly out with friends or family and may be taping shows for watching later on.
Any fan of WMC, how's about we send Hershey's Kisses to ABC?

Women's Murder Club is doing well, the reason that hasn't been picked up is because they are going to make more episodes of it this season. A lot of the shows they picked up are just going to go straight to the next season I think. So ABC wants to see how the post strike episodes do before picking it up.

My wife will be happy when they make a new Desperate Housewives. Just curious... do you watch over cable, satellite, or over-air tv? Seems like all the hit shows are broadcast for free, yet people pay for satellite or cable... what gives? http://lowtechtimes.com/2008/02/11/cablesatellite-vs-free-tv/

Tv reception is spotty and unreliable in many areas.
Cable also brings many specialized channels that would never survive mainstream like Discovery and Sci fi.
And it wasn't too long ago the cable networks were kicking ass quality wise compared to the broadcast nets.
Monk, Psych, BSG, Eureka, Mythbusters, South Park, Dexter, The Sopranos are just a few of the recent reasons people enjoy their cable subscriptions.
