(S05E04) "Women don't get turned on by "safe!" They crave danger!" - Shake
Back to normal. Markula is gone, the Aqua Teens are back in their house, and Carl is back to being Carl. It's like the first three episodes of this season never happened. As much as I enjoyed that little trilogy, this is the type of stuff that I've been missing: Shake shoving kittens into the microwave.
Or should I say "Korean Capacitator?" Whatever you call it, it didn't bode well for Meatwad's newest pet -- an actual living, breathing kitten named Terrence. This show has depicted some raunchy, questionable, and offensive things in the past, but actually blowing up a kitten in the microwave may top the list. At this point, I don't put anything past Shake.
This kind of caught me off guard. Meatwad isn't exactly known for having real pets. Inanimate objects usually tend to be his choice for friends. He must have turned a new leaf though because Terrence wasn't the first of Meatwad's pets that Shake had 'nuked on high.' The backyard had become a knock-off Pet Sematary of sorts, overflowing with Meatwad's lost pals--fish, kittens, puppies, and a trained circus gorilla. Almost immediately I was questioning what it would take to bring them all back to life.
Then Carl came over and took a radioactive dump in the bushes. (Sentences like that are why I love this show.)
Blame the "Reedickyoulus," Carl's new male enhancement machine. Think of a Nordic-Track crossed with a Bowflex crossed with one of those 25¢ rides you find in front of mini-marts. Add in a penis pump and you've got yourself a "Reedickyoulus." The one downside? It may or may not cause your poop to glow in the dark. Mix with dead animals and voila! Zombies!
One of my favorite recurring themes in this show is Shake's belief that he's a master in the bedroom. He's one of the most sex-crazed characters on television. Only thing is, we've never seen him in action despite his claims to be having sex almost constantly. So, when the zombie trained circus gorilla offered up a free ride...well, you know what happened.
More thoughts...
-
I loved when Frylock cut off Shake's zombie head and it didn't kill him. Frylock's response? "Goddamn Wikipedia!"
-
Shake's cat was named Mr. Sparkles! I was happy to see Meatwad stand up and retaliate though. Poor Mr. Sparkles...
-
Anyone else notice that Carl's glowing yellow dung sort of looked like Handbanana?
-
I liked Carl's sales pitch for mesh underwear: it's like going commando, but you still have control. True...
-
Five words: Gay Zombie Ape Party Bus
So this episode got me thinking. Even though they weren't in it, I'd love to see an episode devoted entirely to Meatwad's imaginary friends. They're always funny and if we can have an episode with no Aqua Teens once, it could happen again.

I don't find aqua teen hunger force particularly funny. Its like the Howard Stern of cartoons in that it gets its laughs from people being surprised at how edgy it can get, but unless there's something clever in the edginess it just isn't enough for me, and ATHF rarely has clever edginess. (Which is sort of the point of the show.)

There was at least one piece of continuity still intact from the first three episodes: the gas leak

I guess the creators moved up to hard drugs. Christ, that was left field... and I'm not sure I liked it.

I would totally love a 70's blaxploitation parody episode with Boxy Brown.

The kitten in microwave sequence abruptly ended my enjoyment of ATHF--and I'm not a member of PETA or that jazz.
It's amazing how downhill ATHF has gone but I suppose that happens when you go seasons beyond your creativity.

What happened to ATHF? It used to be hilarious, now i can't even remember when i laughed at an episode. The only funny thing in this ep was the Wikipedia line. I hope somebody tells the writers that offensive=offensive and funny=funny there is no transitive property here.
Oh yeah the line about new carpet was marginally funny as well

I don't believe that it was ever affected by the strike because the [adult swim] shows aren't part of the WGA, they're part of a separate animator's guild, I believe. I believe most if not all the scripts have been finished anyway - Jackson Publick's blog should have some info on that if you can dig it up.
CAN YOU DIG IT?

I gotta say, I'm not really understanding the ATHF hatred here -- if anyone is really a lover of ATHF, after all the shit that has been done, how can you really be offended by a kitten blowing up in the microwave? seemed almost appropriate to me. and i personally loved this episode -- meatwads song at the beginning was enough for me -- sort of like when carl reads meatwads note off his house at the beginning of "Carl" -- a great beginning goes a long way. I have been singing that song for days. I'm glad the characters are back bc I absolutely hated episodes 1 and 2 this season...

The kitten in the microwave was just downright sadistic of Shake.
If you consider all the characters that have died before - well, in 90% of the cases, they didn't actually die they simply got resurrected later on, and in the 10% of cases that they did die and stay dead, well they generally deserved it.
The cat in the microwave bothered me too. I guess what was most disturbing about the scene is that the writers thought people would laugh at it. What were they thinking?
It also reminded me of a real life incident where 2 students at Indiana University were actually toking up (hey, I've done my share of smoking, and in my opinion, you're a sociopath if you're violent while stoned) and burning cats to death. They were caught when one of their victims managed to escape. The owners took the cat into a clinic and there were hundreds of donations. After 2 months, the severely disfigured cat was on it's way home, only to die shortly afterward from a blood clot. I still remember the cat's name was Olivia.

Is there anything funny about that? Why should a fictional depiction of abuse make anybody laugh?

I have to agree with u on this one. I have been a fan of this show for years and watched every episode and none of them affended me whatsoever. The cat in the microwave didn't bother me because I knew it was just a joke and I'm going to like this show no matter what. If you're really a fan of this show you wouldn't be affended by this kind of athf stuff.

indeed...there is alot of hating going on here, ive never watch athf for the quick witted quips or clever inuendo, but rather the in your face, odd series of events that have no ryhme or reason...and been watching it since season 1, that whole first series in this episode had me cracking up, meatwad singing a love song to terrance, shake grabbing terrance while saying 'it is time', ending with terrance blowing up...god i was pissing my pants...so i dunno what all you guys are expecting, but i think they are hitting their target audience

Dude how does it remind you of some stoners burning cats to death? Wow you guys need to back off some animated nuts, if the FCC is cool with it then you shouldn't complain. Talking about freedom of speech and you wouldn't even allow it.

Look, I would like to point something out to pea brains like you.
The reason freedom of speech exists isn't so you can show tits and ass on television, nor is it so that you can make depictions of children having sex with adults, nor is so you can torture a dog to death which is legally your property as performance art.
It's to protect political speech, political speech like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gb9VxvOI74
Which isn't protected anymore, apparently, and none of you jerk offs seems to care, because that's actually important speech, criticism of your government.

Saying Freedom of Speech is only protected when it quesitons government is like saying the Right to Bare Arms is only valid on Hunting Trips. If you're a proponent of free speech (and not a Natzi) you'll support Bono's right to whine about starving children in Africa as much as Ron Paul's right to slam our current administration. It works on all levels: politics, societyl, and in ATHF's case feeding a broom up someone's ass
