(S01E05) The "manny": "You're awesome."Mia [whispers]: "I'm awesome."
Even my husband laughed out loud when Lucy Liu delivered that line. We got to see some more of Mia this episode which was nice. She went back and forth between the likeable but too-serious brain surgeon and the carefree and sexy "manny." By the way, did you find the brain surgeon too intense? I think he's sweet. The writers built him up as the stable, good-looking, intelligent man for Mia last episode then tore him down in the first ten minutes of this week's episode just to make room for a fling with the "manny."
More on Mia and the other girls after the jump...
Mia: Firstly, her hairstyles are out of control. Okay, now I can move on. I kind of like the storyline with the "manny." It is bit disappointing that Mia is not as into her boyfriend as she was last week though. Then again, you knew it wasn't going to work with the perfect brain surgeon for long (although I wouldn't mind hearing them speak in Chinese to each other again).
I have two issues with the "manny" story. First, the "manny" was so confident with Mia, almost too confident. He's this young guy outright hitting on a woman who could give him his first big break as a photographer. He was too sure of himself. It's fine that he's attracted to her but I think the story would be more believeable if he was just a bit more awkward. Second, I'd like to see something more of a tie-in to Zoe. After all, he is Zoe's employee. Yes, they had the surprise in the foyer moment but other than that, there's really nothing at stake with their friendship. It would be much juicier if Mia had to sneak around behind Zoe's back.
Caitlin: She found out that Alicia is pregnant this episode. Just a sidenote, who goes and lays down in some random person's bedroom at a dinner party? Too comfortable if you ask me. But, back to Caitlin. We got to see how mature Caitlin was when she reacted to the news by going out to dinner and having a one-night stand with Sam Morgan, the playwright she met at the baby shower last episode. I'm beginning to think she doesn't even deserve this Alicia. It was a nice change, however, to see Caitlin actually analyzing her feelings and her choices and not just "joking her way around it."
Juliet: This is the first time that I liked Juliet's storyline the best. It was real and emotional. I loved the parts with her daughter. I didn't see that outburst on the street coming. What a good little actress too. I loved how she brought up that a boy at the private school hit on her using the fact that her dad and his mom (Cilla) had had an affair. I don't, however, think it's all that realistic that she will now be attending a New York city public school. I have nothing against public schools (my mom is a fourth grade teacher at one). I just think it's a little far-fetched that a kid from that family would attend one.
We also got two insights into Juliet's character this episode. First, we found out that she was a wild child who lashed out to get attention from her parents. That added some depth to her usual icy, indifferent, reserved self. Second, we found out that while she is an immensely successful business woman, she has no idea about her own finances. What a position to be in at the beginning of a divorce.
Zoe: She had a lot on her plate this episode. A big deal, finding a divorce lawyer for Juliet, making time for her tenth anniversary--she was all over the place. While Frances O'Connor usually does a stellar job pulling it off, I found myself bored with her this episode. Maybe it was the story. Zoe and her husband Eric went from very few marital issues and good, open line of communication to outright fighting and making guilt-inducing remarks like, "I miss her." They just fell apart and then were the perfect couple again in South Hampton.
Cashmere Quotables...

"Does anyone need a tissue?" --Juliet Draper

It took me a little while to figure that the manny was also the 20-year-old that Liz dated in the "Cougars" episode of 30 Rock. I was trying to remember where I'd seen him before.

Yes, the manny was played by the wonderful Val Emmich, who is also an amazing singer/songwriter in addition to being at the top of every cougar's list in Hollywood. Hoping to see more of him after the next episode...

Yeah, I noticed that a couple of Liz's (hilariously unsuccessful) romantic interests in 30 Rock are on Cashmere Mafia, like the 20 year old in the "Cougars" ep, and Gray (aka "the Hair") from "The Head and The Hair" episode. And although I do like this show, both guys were more entertaining on 30 Rock.

I think Mia's new man is hot. He's not a cardboard character like some of the other guys there, but he'll turn that way just like the rest soon, given the way the screen writers are like; I hope not.
Mia and her brain doctor, Jason, are great together! I like how he says in the beginning, "I don't date Asian girls." That was funny, but I guess a hot guy like him could date any girl he wants.
