I was just at the supermarket and saw the headline in one of the gossip mags that Suzanne Pleshette was on her death bed, and now I hear that Pleshette has died of cancer at the age of 70.
TV fans will remember Pleshette from her role as Emily Hartley, wife of psychologist Bob Hartley on CBS' The Bob Newhart in the 70s. She reprised the role in the classic final episode of Newhart. Pleshette appeared in several other TV shows as well, including a role as Mark Feuerstein's mom on Good Morning Miami and James Garner's love interest on 8 Simple Rules, as well as guest spots on Columbo, Will & Grace, The Name of the Game, Gunsmoke, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Invaders, It Takes A Thief, The Fugitive, Wild, Wild West, and several others.
On the big screen, she appeared in The Birds, The Shaggy D.A., The Lion King II, The Power, Support Your Local Gunfighter, and many films.

A great loss - she was one of my favorites. For one thing, she packed much more sexuality that just about all the female TV stars of the era. She was on of those people that made you feel something when her eyes landed on you.
A great and classy person.

Suzanne Pleshette and I grew up together on West End Avenue in Manhattan. We were classmates at PS9 (Public School 9) which was on 82nd Street right across from her apartment building.
She was beautiful even as a child and she had the best sense of humor and was truly loved by everyone in her class.
Her mother and father were a very handsome couple. Her dad, Eugene Pleshette was president of the Brooklyn Paramont Theatre.
As kids we thought her mom looked a lot like Lucille Ball.
I remember Suzanne inviting me to her apartment along with a few other of her classmates to arrange a surprize birthday party for her mom. We were about 9 years old then.
Years later I visited Suzanne backstage when she was starring in THE MIRACLE WORKER on Broadway. When she opened her dressing room door she greeted me by singing the old PS9 school song.
She was a delightful youngser and grew into one of the approachable and lovely ladies of the professional theatre and motion picture world.
Rest in peace, Suzanne, we miss you and will always remember you. David Meltzer

Wonderful classy lady. Did you know that Tom Poston was the love of her life, but they went on to marry other people and then got married in 2001 when they were both widowed. Also your obituary of her is highly accurate. The AP obit says Bob Hartley was a psychiatrist, but you got it correct and said he was a psychologist.

Very sad to hear about her passing. I must say that I was a huge fan of hers. When guys of my age would stand around shooting the bull and the question would arise as to who we thought was the sexist actress I never hesitated in my responce...Suzanne Pleshette. But I know she was much more than that. She was a great actress as well. I read where she once said "I'm an actress, not a movie star". Well Suzanne, you were all that and much more to me.
I will miss you. God bless you and your family.
