I know, you woke up in the middle of the night last night in a cold sweat and wondered, why is the new Knight Rider car a Mustang?
Davis Bartis, who is the executive producer on the new NBC remake of the 80s show, says that there is no Trans Am available like the original, so they went with the Ford Mustang, which he thinks is "the coolest car out there." So now, not only will K.I.T.T. have a new voice (Arrested Development's Will Arnett, taking over for William Daniels), the car itself will be completely new.
They couldn't find a Trans Am like the one used in the original? Why not build one, or get one of the old cars that seem to pop up on eBay every other month?
I think they should have gone with a completely radical choice. Why not a 1975 Dodge Dart? My brother owned one of those.

I can't believe they used a Turd, I mean Ford for Kitt. I am definitely not watching that show. If it's not a GM vehicle, then it's not Night rider!
Sorry folks, but Ford is just not that impressive.

Why not the new 2009 CAMARO? The coupe and the convertible stole the Detroit auto show the past two years and is MORE AWESOME than the TIRED OLD
designed Mustang--and has ALWAYS BEEN!
From a one CAMARO and a two OLDSMOBILE owner!

Why not the new forthcoming 2009 CAMARO that stole the Detroit auto show the past two years--the REAL
attention getter and star of the show. It's an AWESOME
car and a Mustang killer as well as a much better design-
and always has been! The Mustang may have predated
it 'way back when and has done so once again but the
BEST appeared last1
Signed, a one CAMARO and two OLDSMOBILE owner!

I won't let the fact that it's a Mustang keep me from watching it.. but "coolest car out there" is so subjective, I wish he could offer a better reason than that.

I don't think it looks so bad. I kind of like the new KITT.
And I'm even looking forward to the new Knight Rider movie/series.
Greetings.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that they would not use anything but a current production car.

my guess other than Ford ponying up the massive cash, last year had Transformers out with all GM vehicles, the TV show wanted to set itself apart. Think about it, if they put a Camaro out there (a far far far far cooler car) people would just say "what the hell is this? bumblebee's cousin?"

Is it not obvious why getting hold of "one" of the old TransAm cars wouldn't be good enough? Someone so close to the television business as yourself must surely realize the (totally obvious) reason.
Shows like Knight Rider and The Dukes Of Hazzard used to destroy on average two cars per episode, which is why in the latest Dukes of Hazzard seasons we saw the same stunts get repeated.
The new Knight Rider could only be made with a "current" car model.

Nothing screams high school driver more than the current model mustang. But then again, maybe they're making Michael Knight younger, and he fights crime in-between classes.

That's interesting, because I think the coolest car out there is the 2008 or 2009 Dodge Challenger. I expect them to honor that. While I do like Mustangs, it looks too puny for KITT. Oh well, not like I expect to love the show anyway.

Why not get the Charger? It's such a nicer car than the Mustang...
Or, they could have asked real nice and gotten one of those sweet ass new Challenger concepts...

Are any of the cars mentioned in this thread "cool?"
Or do they all scream "high school driver" and "likely to end up with a base model 'Vette when I hit 50?"
Camaro? Mustang? Challenger? They're ok, but I wouldn't be caught dead in one. All crass, no class.
