(S04E11) "Call me when she codes." - Hahn
The power of healing. Does it work? Perhaps. I think it went a little too far when everyone who "the healing lady" touched got better, but I prefer to play the skeptic and Hahn's line did it for me. You're a kook and I'll be back when you're on the verge of death.
Healing took center stage in this episode though. Along with redemption, lying, cheating, and neglect. Just like every other episode of Grey's Anatomy. To be honest, I was really pumped for this one. We've been reading for months about this Bailey narrated episode (she really didn't have much to say), but once it got going I found it a little stale. Maybe it's because it's been over a month since the last episode and the story wasn't exactly fresh in my mind. Maybe it's because this is the last pre-WGA Strike episode. Or maybe it's because I'm finding myself less and less drawn to these characters. Either way, I hope this forced time off gives the show a chance re-invent itself.
That gripe out of the way and ignoring the fact that Bailey had very little to do in the voice-over department, she was still fantastic in this episode and deserves all the praise in the world. More than any other character on this show, Bailey has shown the greatest range of emotions. It is a little odd to me that it's taken four seasons to really get to see her in a home setting though. Seems a little late in the game, but that's besides the point. She was great.
She really is the man in the marriage and I can't say that I'm surprised that it's falling apart for her and Tucker. All the clichés are in place. Tucker is a stay at home dad. Miranda works too much. Tuck Jr. is neglected and tragedy finally struck. This has divorce written all over it. Now don't hate me for finding a little humor in this, but isn't it a little ironic that a bookshelf of Bailey's heavy med school books are what fell on Tuck Jr.? Hey I didn't write it, but the story would have been served equally well if it was just any ol' bookcase. I think the main point was to try and throw more blame Bailey's way. She did leave that safety gate open after all. But at the end, Tuck Jr. seemed like he was going to be OK. He was breathing on his own and maybe "the healing lady" helped. Like Webber said: it can't hurt.
Now I mentioned divorce once, but it popped up twice. Mrs. O'Malley was in town and pulled the same move any visiting family member on Grey's Anatomy does: she hung out in the waiting area the entire day. I always found that odd. Anyway, George hasn't been keeping her in the loop and Izzie, being unaware as well, spilled the beans about everything to Mrs. O'Malley. The divorce, the adultery, the lack of grandchildren. Ouch. Maybe iGeorge really is meant to be since George pulled the same "What? You didn't know?" move when he let the Rose/Derek kiss slip to Meredith.
I really liked the moment between Callie and Mrs. O'Malley though. Once Callie got past all the hand-knit unisex baby clothes, they had a real heart to heart. I mention that scene because I think it sheds a little light on why George is so timid and passive-aggressive. We really saw his mother's true character here. Lil' Georgie grew up in a God fearin' household. It was good to see him stand up to his mother though, admit he was wrong, and decide that he needs a fresh start. Is he really going to go rent an apartment with Lexie though? That has "drunk mistake sex" written all over it.

Looks like all the speculation about Hahn playing for the other team was bogus. She has a major crush on Sloan and finally admitted that it's the job that's stopping her. How's her new BFF Callie going to feel about this though? I thought they sort of swore off men together? Plus Callie already slept with Sloan, so you know she'll have an opinion on it.
-
Derek and Meredith broke up. Again. Does this count as news anymore? I'm not sure, but the second that George spilled the beans to Mer about the kiss, you knew how it would end. I think the thing that bothers me now, is that the way that Meredith and Derek have evolved, I'm not sure they're supposed to end up together in the end. Even if they do, the idea of it feels oddly unsatisfying to me. Derek and Rose, I vote yes. And he should still build that big freakin' house.
-
I had forgotten that Bailey named her son after George.
-
Hahn still picked Alex over Cristina! Hilarious! However, Cristina did pass on closing up Tuck Jr. to keep holding his hand instead. I can never decide with her. Bitch or not bitch?
-
We finally got some clarity regarding Izzie's beef with Cristina. She doesn't want cardio, she just wants some direction she can believe in. I suppose I can understand that. Every episode, Izzie's actions can pretty much be likened to shaking up some dice in a Yahtzee cup. Who knows what the hell you're going to get.
-
Seeing Bailey forced to be a mother and not a doctor was great. I think that was probably my favorite scene in the episode. I was really surprised she told off Hahn though. I know she knows that Hahn saved Tuck Jr.'s life, but to say "I never want to see your face again?" That was bitchy even for Bailey.
-
Mrs. O'Malley gave George hell about not telling her that he was divorcing Callie, but unless I'm mistaken, didn't Izzie let George's exam failure slip too? How come she didn't ask her son about that?
Weirdest moment of the episode? When "the healing lady" and her cult buddies friends diagnosed Alex. Sure it was a little eerie for him, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that someone who's a Grade-A asshole probably hasn't had the easiest life. They did notice that he gets awfully happy when he's around Izzie though. See, now that was a good relationship. Relationships don't really seem to matter at Seattle Grace anymore though. No one can make it work.

My wife still likes this show, and that's the only reason I watch it at this point.

HA! That's the reason I watch it too. I mean I like Sloan, Karev, the Chief and Sheperd, but the rest of the cast is ridiculous. I have never seen a show that can be so awesome when it lives up to its true potential (season 1, the first 10 or so episodes of every other season) only to self destruct in the second half into an incoherent mess. This season seems to be going the opposite, starting as an incoherent mess and potentially intriguing with the new nurse chick for Sheperd.
I wanted to jump ship when the Denny storyline started. I thought my wife would finally leave with the Meredeth death. Somehow i'm still watching.

Ok so I love grey's and I was just happy to see another episode, finally! I think this episode is the best so far. Why?!??!? Because finally, Burke and Addison seem to be out of our minds. finally, we start to accept lexie (and so does meredith), and finally, things seem to be going somewhere. I do wish some new characters who already work in the hospital will show. Rose is one of the few examples. It always seems like these are the only doctors in the whole hospital. The first 10 episodes defined our new characters, lexie and hahn, and now they have a place to grow. hahn and sloan... lexie and george with an apartment.... Overall, this is a great launch pad episode because things are gonna be happenin.
I loved the Bailey story line, but I didn't like bailey, or should I say I didn't like chandra wilson in this episode. Usually, I think chandra is one of better actors on grey's, but this episode seemed like chandra was having a worse day than bailey. I didn't feel like chandra made bailey really feel bad about the whole thing. When she went through her morning routine to see if she really left the gate open, I didn't believe one bit. but maybe it's supposed to be that way. maybe, bailey has been so far away from her family life, that it's hard for her to care about her son as much, and she knows she should care, but for some reason she can't as much anymore.... I don't know...

I will still watch this show. But with the strike, watching other shows and the constant media exposure Heigel...it's hard. This show is starting to get a little tired.

good episode. i think george will eventually end up with lexie, and alex with izzie. bailey will end up with the chief, christina will turn lesbian and sleep with callie.
hopefully meredith will commit suicide and all will be well again at seattle grace.

as a footnote, ausiello reports a MAJOR character is leaving the show after it comes back.
in my opinion that has to be Heigl, she is having a great movie career, with knocked up, and now 27 dresses on the way.
or maybe its patrick dempsey.

I would enjoy the show a lot more if meredith left. Everytime she's on screen she just sucks the life out of it. Her story is a merry-go-round with no end in sight and after 3 years? 4 years? of this on and off crap with what's-his-name, I could just scream.

Don't want Mer/Der together? Want Rose and Derek together? Geeze, what a shocker...You have never liked the Meredith character and you do nothing to hide it, so why would this be any different than your last fifty reviews of this show? Rose is a poorly written plot device and you know it, but in your contempt for the Meredith charcter, you choose to put Derek with the one character that almost makes him seem lifeless and boring..Nice choice (ugh)

This episode was rather disappointing. And I say this as a REALLY big "Grey's" fan. The MER/DER relationship is OLD. Move on you two! Derrick was right. I think we are ALL tired of the back and forth tired ol' arguments. This is NOT high school people. Rose is a flat character-no dimension but her Meredith-like waifishness. Smae with Lexie.
I actually liked Callie tonight and had some empathy for her as she admitted to George's Mom that she "liked being an O'Malley." Iactually hated George at that moment for busting Callie's bubble.
The healing thing was rather contrived. I agree that science does NOT have all the answers but the "healers' were SO cliche. "Grey's" writers better look to the chaplain character on "ER" if they want some healthy spiritulaity portrayed. Or, once the writer's strike is over, contact Babara Hall for some help in writing about spiritual issues.
Why SO hard on Bailey, Toomey? She is NOT a bad mother. she does not abandon her husband for her profession. Grow up! She is a professional woman and NO man in the professional world is EVER chastised as being a bad Father or choosing work above spouse or children. Men are patted on the back. Women take the shit...INCLUDING from their own INSECURE husbands.
I haven't given up on "Grey's" but SERIOUSLY, lets get better writing or Seattle Grace will face demolition.

I can't understand how Hahn gets away with maliciously avoiding using Christina. It's a personal thing with her not to use Christina. You would think at that level of expertise, a more logical, rationale mind would come into play. Christina lives for cardio and she's well prepared. Why ignore such talent on an emotional hangup?
I keep waiting on the Chief or Bailey to say stop ignoring Christina's talent.

Actually, I think the choice that Christina made to hold Tuck's hand showed something to Hahn. I think she's going to start to give Cristina a chance. I totally get why Hahn isn't choosing her. She is self-rightous... and Hahn wants to give her a check.
If anyone was surprised at the Mer/Der breakup.... again...
Decent epsiode, and I think it would have faired a lot better if there wasn't such a break between them. I guess now we just wait...

Alex/Izzie was a good relationship when? When he cheated on her, or when she used him for sex? Or perhaps when he said he wanted her ass kicked out of the intern program.
God, I hope they don't go there again.
Meredith/Derek.. don't really care. Not a fan.
But despite all that, I've seen a number of scenes from this episode on youtube as I don't live in the US, and it seems it was a good episode.

First off, I think that Hahn is just playing the new Nazi in town - she's going to do what is best for her surgeons, and just like some of you have said, Cristina needs to be put in her place a bit. Yes, Hahn is a bit of a robot, but you know she kicked ass to get there.
Second, Chandra Wilson may just be the best actress on TV today. In a weak episode, she just about made me cry. Love that about her. And as for her comment to Hahn, yes it may have crossed a line, but it was just a Mama-Bear reaction, and I think even Hahn realized that.
Third, I really could have done without another Mer/Der breakup. Seriously. They've beaten that horse to death, and quite frankly, I want to see them together. Yes, Rose is cute and shiny and new, but how does a man go from building a house with someone to asking another woman to dinner the same day? I guess Meredith nailed it - he just wants someone who wants those things, too. Hope Rose does.

IZZY AND GEORGE NEED EACH OTHER,GEORGE MADE AN IRRESPONSIBLE COMMITMENT TO CALLIE.CALLIE IS SO NEEDY,ITS ALL ALWAYS ABOUT WHAT SHE WANTS.SHE'S RICH MAYBE THAT SPOILED HER.MEREDITH DOESN'T WANT A COMMITMENT SUCH AS MARRIED AND EVERYTHING THAT COMES AFTER IT.WE ALL DREAM OF GETTING MARRIED IN A LONG FLOWING BRIDAL GOWN,FLOWERS AT OUR FEET AND GOING WITH OUR MCDREAMY OR RUNNING TOWARDS OUR OWN FANTASY,EVERY GIRLS DREAM.MEREDITH IS SCARED THEIR LOVE WON'T GROW EVEN WHEN THEIR OLD AND GRAY.MEREDITH AND DEREK-JUST TAKE A LEAP AND GO FOR IT.MEREDITH'S SISTER IS A GOOD ADDITION TO GREY'S.NOW MEREDITH DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE ATTENTION.WILL THEY BE FRIENDS.I THINK MEREDITH WON'T ACCEPT HER "SISTER" BECAUSE OF THE EMOTIONAL PAIN ALLREADY EXPERIENCED.HER MOTHER JUST DIED AND THEN THIS GIRL JUMPS IN AND SAYS "I'M YOUR SISTER",ALOT OF BAGGAGE,TOO MUCH FOR MEREDITH.THE SHOW IS THE BEST,IF ONLY WE DIDN'T HAVE REPEATS.

It causes me physical pain to watch this show. I must be some kind of masochist because I'm saying this for 2 seasons now. Every character sucks... Every story-arc (if you can call it that) is stupid beyond belief and they are repeating the same s*it over and over again. Why do I still hang around? I'm hoping that next episode it will get better.
I know, I'm such an idiot :-(
