Here are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.
If aliens were to monitor our TV viewing and ratings, they might think that our entire civilization is structured around the game of football. Playoff games, bowl games, post-game coverage, even a "bridge" made the top 20 this week. Earth is a football-based society! NBC must be happy, not just about the football games that got on the list but the appearance of Celebrity Apprentice and the return of Law and Order.
1. NFL Playoff Game (NBC)
3. NFL Playoff Game Bridge (NBC)
4. AFC Wildcard Post-Game (CBS)
5. Desperate Housewives (ABC)

8. Deal Or No Deal - Thurs (NBC)
9. CSI (CBS)
10. Extreme Makeover (ABC)
11. Deal Or No Deal - Weds (NBC)

It's funny how the new NFL logo (which you used above, Bob) is out there for anyone to use, but the league itself won't start using it until the beginning of next season. Not sure which version I like better.

"Earth is a football-based society"
It's funny how Americans project their own ideas onto the rest of the world. When you said that Aliens might think that "Earth" is a football-based society, what you actually meant was "America" is a football-based society. The rest (the other 95% of the population of the Earth) isn't interested in American Football at all. Ask any of these 95% (the 6,300 million people who don't live in America) who the two teams are that are in the Superbowl final and you'd be lucky to find 1% of them with the remotest idea. On the flipside, come the Soccer World Cup final day and you'd find a massively different situation. I wouldn't be surprised if 5 billion of them know the two teams involved.
Earth is a Soccer-based society. The only single country that isn't, is America, but they're only 5% of the Earth's population, so they're statistically insignificant.
Saying all that, you'd think I don't like American Football. I do though. I enjoy the Superbowl and have been to a few Superbowl parties in New York. When I'm not in America though, the Superbowl comes and goes without anyone noticing. It gets very little coverage in the media. Unless you had your TiVo set with a wishlist for SUPERBOWL, then you're likely to not even know it was on.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - American is insignificant, we're horrible, we don't like soccer.
Unless I'm just not understanding things in my stupid-american-brain - doesn't the rest of the world call "soccer" football?
So, wouldn't that make "Earth a football based society"?

Try again, Derek. American football and soccer(association football) are both types of football. Step down from the soapbox.

WHat is sad is that Neilsen can get ratings for night time TV shows, but when it comes to "daytime soaps" they refuse to place their boxes in colleges/dorms, as they say it is too difficult. So, no one really knows how many people watch the "soaps." With the way that our "tech" advances are now, it can be done, but they are too lazy.
