(S04E10) "He can build homes and decorate them. Sometimes God gives with both hands." - Lee McDermott
So Ida didn't survive the twister. Was anyone really surprised? If everyone in the basement had survived it would've strained credibility a little too much. However, seeing the Scavo clan crawl out of the rubble was really cool. It was the kind of moment that hearkened back to the first season and reminded my why I started watching Desperate Housewives in the first place.
Another bright spot in this episode was Kathryn Joosten. Actresses like her are the backbone of a decent drama. I wouldn't be surprised if she eventually wins an Emmy for DH like she did for The West Wing.
What a treat to see Mike Farrell playing a character very different from what we've seen before. Personally, I can't wait to see Carlos and Gabby get what's coming to them. Victor left her with nothing and Carlos has no way to access his money. It's like they say, "If you wanna play, you gotta pay."
I was disappointed to see Gabby's slapstick routine in the garage. Did we really have to see her senselessly rifling through boxes just to reach the inevitable embarrassing conclusion? I thought Teri Hatcher had a lock on those scenes.
I also had a hard time feeling sorry for Carlos when his blindness was revealed. Should I feel bad for him because Gabby is too selfish to take care of him? He knew she was a scorpion when he headed across the river, didn't he?
So what was it that Susan and Julie thought was so bad about having Bree live with them? Did they not expect her to cook and clean and treat their home like it was her own? I mean, clearly Bree has a screw loose but as a single man, I think it's a small price to pay for a home cooked meal and a surplus of clean socks. Susan's scheming to keep the Hodges in her house as long as possible is a pretty tired plotline if you ask me.
What I really liked was the development of the Mayfair's storyline. I know I'm not the only one dying to find out their family secret. Quite frankly, I haven't been this interested in the show since Mary Alice offed herself. Dana Delaney and Nathan Fillion are the best things to happen to DH in a long time.
Speaking of the early seasons of the show, let's hope Marc Cherry has finally gotten over his fascination with cremated bodies. Is it really that funny to see the remains of the dead flying through the air and landing on people?
By the way, is it just me or did ABC air a commercial for October Road during tonight's episode? Is that show still on?

I don't think Gabby will leave Carlos. She did those crappy modeling gigs when he was in jail and she wanted him back before she realized that he still had the off-shore bank account...and i suspect that Edie knows how to get into it. She was looking at the paper inside her house before Gabby came through the window and nobody talked to her in the episode.

Kathryn Joosten won an Emmy for her role as Mrs. Mcclusky back in 2004.

In fact, Kathryn Joosten have an Emmy for DH (as Guest Star) and not for The West Wing.

I'd be scared to death to have Bree come stay with me. No, I don't think they expected her to cook and clean. Instead, they probably thought Bree would expect them to cook and clean for her. At least that's what I would have thought.

I didn't see a commercial during DH, but ABC has been promoting the return of October Road for quite some time.

October Road has been back for a few weeks now. I love this show and wish ABC would promote it a little more. Especially now with the writers' strike, this show is all new episodes.

Trust me, when it comes to living with a crazy woman, you're better off cooking and cleaning for yourself.

Carlos is blind? L-A-M-E. What a forced storyline.

When Susan and Julie stayed at Brie's house, she srove them nuts, as they alluded. They failed to recognize that when Brie is the hostess, she's in charge; when she's the guest she's compelled to be helpful--although they may yet regret it. For example, when Brie said she "fixed" Julie's hem, I thought she meant she had lengthened all Julies skirts to a hemline she considered decent--and I think it would have been funnier that way.
As for the Mayfairs, it will be interesting to see what the other secret is, but even though Katherine isn't quite as neurotic as Bree, I refuse to believe she hasn't dusted under the bed since her aunt died weeks ago. Not to get too graphic, but when somebody dies in your home, you do a lot of cleaning afterwards. Yet Adam finds the note, but no dust bunnies.
And J. C. MacKenzie may not be a 9, but no way he's a 3.

Boy you took a bitter pill while watching this show. Get another reviewer if you are going to hate everything about the episode. I mean cut everyone some slack. The whole Gabby in the garage was true DH fun. I smiled and thought this is what I missed. NOt this corny tornado thing. Which I realllly dont understand what the point of that was. All that for what?
I felt you lost the feeling of the show. Your review was borderline angry.
Plus you are asking about October road in your review? WTF?

Agreed with Hot Chick. You are reviewing DH, NOT October Road. Maybe you should check your facts too because Kathryn Joosten received an award for her role in DH in 2004.
The part about Gabby in the garage was hilarious. It was a welcome addition to the show to see her flexing her comedy muscles again. As for feeling sorry for Carlos, yes, he is now blind after thinking he was getting his money & Gabby back. You can't help who you fall in love with. They tried divorce and that still couldn't keep them apart, so yes, I think we should feel sorry for him. Gabby might leave him but she might also surprise us all because she knows that she has no money now either. They have both learned their lessons and I think this will only make them closer.
I thought this was one of the best shows of the season. There were a couple episodes earlier on which I thought were kind of boring but this one is bringing us back to DH in their first season with it revolving around the Mayfair victory. I hope that the writer's strike comes to an end soon because I can't wait for the next episode!

Wow, you hit a nerve with the minor criticisms, eh, Paul?
I think your spot on. The Gabby bit was lame and over the top. "Hm, I have to find a document in this garage full of boxes. Better start randomly flipping boxes and rifling through the contents." And the "Susan feels like she's coming apart" plotline with Bree felt forced and contrived, and more like Susan trying to come up with an acceptable excuse for being an interfering mooch. If they want us to buy it, they need to lay a MUCH better foundation in the story for that kind of character faux paus.
Lastly, commenters, he can put whatever the f*ck he wants in his review: it's a BLOG, not the bloody New York Times Review of Last Night's TV.

Can anyone shed any light on the episode's title: Welcome to Kanagawa?
That happens to the be the title of a song in Steven Sondheim's 1976 musical Pacific Overtures, but that reference isn't making any sense to me.
Thanks!

Besides quoting the best line of the episode, the review was pretty harsh.
Flexing my Lost mind and looking for connections where there aren’t any, I think the title of the episode is about bittersweet change. The song is in the musical “Pacific Overtures” – which was about Western influence in Japan and the lost of ancient customs, but gaining economic prominence.
In this episode, Gaby and Carlos lose the money, but they are happy, together in love and starting over.
Bree’s house is destroyed, but she brings comfort to Susan in her time of need.
Ida is dead, but she saved the life of the Scavo children and allowed Lynette to better appreciate Ms. McCluskey.
Katherine’s husband didn’t want to leave because of his cheating, but in the end he was glad to leave after finding out what his wife did.
I have a few more weeks…I needed something to do!

I enjoyed the episode, but I'm seriously considering moving Susan back to the 'hated it' pile. That was just foul...or should I say 'desperate'.
Still mad at Lynette, and I'm glad that she is showing remorse. Hell, she should feel like crap a few more episodes. Capital C indeed.
Gaby can't win...just desperate for the sake of desperation. last night She should have some recourses on the deceased husband front--heck, in some locales, she would be mayor now! I hope the returning writers give her & Carlos a silver lining soon.
Bree was very cringe-worthy this episode. While I understood the intent, she too really towed the 'desperate' line by pimping her son like that. For the first time, I think Bree lost a cool point with me.
Come back soon...

Meh. I agree with everyone who said something bad about your review. Practically all of your reviews for DH are like, and if you honestly hate the show, the plotlines and the characters so much maybe you'd be better off not watching it?

Bree lost cool points with me too, actually the whole show did when Bree pimped her son. I have been a loyal watcher since episode 1, but this episode really turned me off.

Mrs. McCluskey's poetry recitation at the ball field was probably the highlight of many DH shows, and was a perfect example of the many facets of people we don't bother to notice. I was so taken aback by the poem that it brought tears to my eyes; she made the words come alive. The entire ballpark scene was one of the best of the entire show from the beginning. It's so refreshing to see some character depth, development similation of reality. I'd also like to see the role of Mike better illuminated. And I'm getting tired of being taunted with the note under the bed at the Mayfair house.

I don't think your review was harsh at all. (although you shoulda checked the West Wing/DH Nomination...)
The only thing I didn't really care for in this episode was the fact that we still know NOTHING about the Mayfair family. A little nugget goes a long way...
