(WARNING: Some Battlestar Galactica spoilers from past seasons here!)For any fan of Battlestar Galactica, the shocking scene toward the end of 'Maelstrom' was a big surprise. That is unless, of course, you found out about it in spoilers. Even the talent involved with the show was in full-on doubt mode when the script passed in front of them, saying that one of their coworkers was about to be killed off. Kill Starbuck? No frakking way!
To complicate matters - and to make Starbuck fans more nervous - Sackhoff landed a regular role on NBC's Bionic Woman. "Wow," fans thought. "They really killed her off."
Then, in the spectacular season finale, an even bigger shock to BSG fans: Starbuck is somehow still alive! But is she? How did she survive? Is she a resurrected Cylon?
Around the same time all of this was going on, Ron Moore and SciFi announced that, indeed, the upcoming fourth season will be Battlestar Galactica's last. It's an interesting concept for a successful franchise to come right out to not only announce its eventual end, but to tell you when it's happening. Lost went and did a similar thing later, announcing that the show will conclude after two more seasons.
With these announced end-of-life dates for successful TV shows, fans can have a bit more assurance that everything they know about the show will be wrapped up neatly and satisfactorily. Will more successful show follow this format or will they continue to produce mediocre seasons in order to sap more advertising dollars, letting the shows lose fans and eventually peter out in the end with little fanfare? Let's hope the BSG and Lost experiments teach some valuable lessons.

Actually, Lost made the announcement first. It was a really amazing decision for that show because Lost makes a LOT of money for ABC. It's odd, but after the writers said "we always envisioned the show as having a beginning, a middle and an end," the BSG writers said the exact same quote along with their announcement.
