(S01E12) "I need to get our life back tomorrow." - Dan
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'll say it again: I can't believe Journeyman may get canceled when it's giving us fantastic episodes. After a nice Christmas-themed episode last week, we now move one step closer to what may end up being the series finale. NBC will air the last completed episode, aka episode 13, this Wednesday at 10 p.m.
"The Hanged Man" not only had Dan face off a major change in his present time after leaving 2007 technology in the past but he also learned what Livia and he share in common besides being travelers.
Caroline/Zack Vasser
Dan's decisions in the past had ripple effects in the present before but nothing similar to what occurred after he accidentally left behind the 2007 camera. When I first saw him put the camera in his pocket, I was sure he would forget it in the past but my hunch was that Katie hadn't erased all the sexy pictures and that someone would use them against her. A TV news reporter like herself wouldn't want a sex scandal on her hands, right? That turn of events would have surely changed the Vassers' present too. But what happened instead was much more than I bargained for. Not only did someone with the right resources got his/her hands on the camera and used it in a way that technology in 2007 is decades ahead from what it really is but said technology advancement ended up in the Vassers having a girl instead of a boy. Dan was clearly torn in wanting to love Caroline and wanting to change the future back to what it was (aka Zack). What made things more difficult was the fact that the "new" Katie never knew Zack. Gretchen Egolf once again showed her acting skills after Dan told Katie that he would try to get their life back tomorrow. Her stare was so intense that it made me uncomfortable!
What an eye-opener for Katie when the psychic said that Dan was looking for Zack. Katie felt she wanted a boy but the psychic confirmed, without knowing it, that Katie and Dan did have a boy. I don't know how I would have reacted: keep this lifetime with Caroline, the child she knows, or go back to the real timeline with Zack, the child she was meant to have.
Livia
When we first meet Livia this week, she is wearing a sexy black outfit. It seems her travels made her be a woman ahead of her own time. As suspected last week, Livia's upcoming nuptials will more than likely be part of episode 13. It would make a good storyline if the case of the week in Wednesday's episode put her wedding in jeopardy.
Time traveling
Dan got major clues this week as to why he and Livia are traveling and the fact that Langley may be involved in it after all. Jack, who did some pretty good convincing to get a peek at Garrity's file, was able to gather names such as Neil Gaines (I think that's what Jack said) and grab a picture showing a very young Dan with Elliot Langley. The picture was taken by Frank; could that be confirming that Frank is involved in time-traveling too? However, if only people born on the same dates as Livia and Dan, could Frank be a traveler? No matter, he could still be involved in the organization. What Jack offered was good confirmation but nothing new for most viewers since we pretty much gathered that Langley knew more than he led on.
What was probably the biggest reveal time-traveling wise was that Livia and Dan were both born under mystical conditions that only occurred twice. So if there are other travelers out there, they must be born on the same day as those two.
With info in hand, Dan tried to confront Langley but the man, using all his acting strength, pretended not to know Dan. I highly doubt Langley was telling the truth. My guess is that after seeing the picture, Langley got scared and didn't want to have to explain himself right now. Maybe he needs to turn to The Powers That Be to get the permission to spill the beans to Dan?
Other tidbits of interest:
- In case you were wondering, Annette was played by Melinda McGraw. She played well the spoiled sister who has an opinion on anything and everything.
- How convenient that Sandra was blind in the present so she couldn't see that Dan hadn't aged since she first saw him?
- "The reason I was in therapy at the age of four." - Katie before introducing her sister.
- "Theresa is pregnant!" - Katie. "Did I cause that?" - Dan.
Some questions I hope get answered in the (series) finale:
- Why Dan and Livia travel? How are all the people they save come together in the end?
- How do they travel?
- Who is behind time-traveling (aka the puppet master)?
- Is Frank a time-traveler or involved with the organization behind traveling?
- When does traveling stop? Will they have to do it until they die?

Ok, after this episode... I just have to say I can't believe they are cancelling this series so soon. Today's episode was great, last week's was just as great!! This show has only gotten better with time. The character intrigue me, the story lines are deep.... IF anyone from NBC is reading this, please don't cancel the show yet. Give it a chance!!

I love this show, it is clever and fun and really makes me think of things impossible. It seems anytime I like a show it gets cancelled. (I really tried for Jericho). I work nights so I have to use my DVR to watch. I hope that service counts on the ratings. Sure, they will put on another reality show.

Damn, I'm going to hate it when I watch the last show of this on Wednesday. And you can't really run repeats of a show you've canceled, I would imagine the sales of the DVD set of this will sell fairly well.
As for the show, yes, the best one yet. Almost a standalone ep, if you watch the "Previously" section at the beginning.

This episode was absoultely brilliant! When Dan came back into the present and was greeted by his daughter Caroline I got chills! Especially after seeing Katie's reaction to Dan's ramblings about them having a son. She wanted no part in what he was saying, and that stare he gave him was bone-chilling.
When Caroline drew Dan a picture of a butterfly, I cheered. The reference to the chaos theory was made so apparent by that drawing, especially when Zach drew a picture of a butterfly to give Dan at the end of the episode. (In case you are unfamilar with the chaos theory it's that thing where they say "The flap of a butterfly's wings can cause a tsunami half way around the world".)
The future electronic paper reminded me so much of the pilot episode of Firefly, as a nearly identical form of computerized paper was used when Badger showed Mal the bulletin from that had come in over the cortex. This also reminded me of Treehouse of Horror V, you know the one where Homer travels back and forth threw time using a toaster.
This show is amazing, and so so so brilliant and should not by any means be canceled. If it's not doing well Monday's @10PM why don't they just move it to a different night. Honestly I've felt that Monday nights had an overload of really good programming on, and the rest of the week, perhaps with the exception of Wednedsay didn't really offer too much.
Save Journeyman! Write to the networks, jump on the bandwagon trolly and send boxes of Rice-A-Roni to the network. Why not trying something new and organize a campaign for people in the NYC area to protest the cancelation of Journeyman near the NBC experience store or the NBC news stuidio (there both really close to each other). I'm sure it would spark some attention.
I love Journeyman and will be sad to see it go, especially when we're flooded with all of the craptastic reality shows next season. ;_;

Or the butterfly was a reference to Ray Bradburry's short story. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Sound_of_Thunder

I suspect that Langley doesn't know him anymore. It has to be something with a butterfly effect theory when two guys killed a lady after Livia and Dan disappears?
Don't you notice that a lady appears Dan and Livia at right time? Don't you think that lady is also a time traveler? I know it's a bad speculation.
I get a feel that we shall meet another time traveler in next and final episode!
So sad, Journeyman ends, I hope Livia and Dan travels upon NBC headquarter and do something for us! Silly putty, am I.

I agree 100%, this was such a well-written, very well-acted episode. I loved how a seemingly simple mistake of leaving a then-ahead-of-it's time piece of technology behind in the past led to such profound changes in both the paper and Dan's home life. The tech at the paper was way cool. And it was touching to see Dan's struggle with wanting to accept Caroline but frantic about losing Zach.
Boy, that sister was a nightmare, no? Too bad she wasn't just a product of a changed future.
I will be really bummed if NBC doesn't give Journeyman another chance. But, of course, the networks have been canceling quality shows forever. It's all nielsen numbers to them. It will be a real shame if they let this show die. Please, NBC, have a heart!

What's cool is that paper-thing LCD screens, like the one in the "ahead of its time" future, has already been developed. It's super far away from being commercially available, but it was still neat to see something that isn't too much science fiction but rather something we WILL have achieved 20+ years from now.
The biggest question/curiosity I've always had with time travel (or rather, the concept of time travel) is the appearance of future technology in the past. The iPhone in the ER a few eps back touched on it a bit, but it's cool that they really focussed on it here. And I like how they were able to tie it into a specific event that had happened (and thus changed). However, even without technology, you'd think Dan would've noticed a few other minor differences because of any small thing he affected in the past -- that is, unless him travelling to the past (normally) is part of the plan, and thus lead to the future he's seeing now anyway.
I could go on and on here! :P But so sad that the show may end after Wednesday's episode.

This show is so awesome. AWESOME. My mother is giving up CSI:NY this Wednesday to watch the finale. Do you hear that, NBC? You are beating CSI in my home! I never felt this sort of disappointment in a network when Arrested Development, The Loop, or Jericho got canned. I guess I'll just have to settle for watching the DVDs over and over again, instead of new episodes with commercials. Heroes aside, you've lost me NBC. You've lost a lot of us.

I agree with mrkorb, I haven't even watched the ep yet (gotta love the DVR) but you have lost me NBC if you cancel this show! Lost me and my wife. I am not one to 'send' a network things, I usually just post things places on the internet of my feeling but I am so tempted to send NBC some sign that this is just a horrible decision to cancel Journyman. What great acting, what great writing, the whole package!

Yes, another great episode. But, imho, I think one of the better quotes of the night is just after Livia first appears in the episode and meets Dan:
Livia: " Oh, I'm so glad it's you."
Dan: " I'm glad it's me too."
:D

I am totally prepared to sound like a broken record. This show is well acted , developing storylines that drive the whole plot forward and great acting to boot! It is Unbelievable that this is going to be cancelled. NBC Please consider running it in a different time slot or switching it to Scifi! There is a writers strike for goodness sake, please save us from more reality TV!
If wednesday is indeed the last episode I will be very upset but grateful to have finally seen some outstanding quality TV!

This was actually the first episode of this show that I've watched, and it is definitely disappointing to learn that it may be on its way out.
I wish the networks would learn that not everything has to "win" its time slot to be a good viable show. If the networks really want to know why they are having a hard time retaining viewership, it's because they don't let shows live long enough to mature and develop and audience. I'd happy TiVo this show now that I know about it, but with the vast array of new programming this fall, I didn't really catch on to this show until now.
Other shows of course *cough*bionic woman*cough* deserve what they have coming to them :-) but this one doesn't seem to be one of those.

OK, did anyone else think Langley looks a lot like an older Jack Vasser in that last shot? I never caught it until the end of this episode, but he looks stunningly like Jack!! I don't know how that could work or what that would mean, but I would not be surprised if Langley was for some reason Dan's brother but older. Kudos for me if I'm right!

My heart breaks at the mere thought of this show being off the air. Last night's episode proved just how worthy it is. It has gotten progressively better with each story, and the family feels like a family more than they ever have before. I care about these characters, and want to see them figure it all out-but over the course of a season! At least give us a full season NBC...spare us the pain of having to buy a dvd set with only 13 episodes.

Wow. This was an incredible episode. This is what I hoped Journeyman would be. This is the kind of quality a program can show when it lives up to it's potential (S60 I'm looking at you). It would be a shame to lose this show when it has so obviously hit it's stride. This story and these characters can go so far if they just get a chance. Please NBC, give Journeyman a chance to shine!

Well, I do recognize quality to this show, but I wouldn't call this episode a great one. I mean it was flawed, like the show is, and some things just really "annoy" me.
The biggest this week was probably Dan's reaction when he sees his daughter, Caroline. Because he should have known what was going on, that only he had memories of a different reality, and that as such ranting and screaming about Zach was not going to help anything, especially in front of his scared wife & daughter !!
I felt like watching Heroes and seeing Peter wasting an hour to open a door he could have just walked right through. This was a character acting like an idiot, only to waste time & create fake drama, and there is nothing more frustrating (for me) that this.
Another thing I didn't like was when Katie saw the light, under the doors, as Dan vanished from this "alternate present". Because if that light isn't just a visual effect for us, viewers, but does occur "for real", and still no one ever saw anything, that just makes no sense at all !
I did like the episode, though. But like the show, while good and of quality, there are some (huge) flaws I believe. Still, can't wait for Wednesday to hopefully get lots of answers...
