(S09E13) If I were going to pick one word to express my feelings about the season finale of America's Next Top Model I'd probably have to go with "disappointed".
For starters, Heather is arguably one of the most popular contestants to participate in one of these modeling competitions. I think it's a travesty that she didn't make it to the final three based solely on this popularity.
I'm convinced there needs to be some sort of fan element to this contest that extends beyond the generic "America's CoverGirl of the week" shtick we see every week that doesn't really amount to anything more than a pat on the back.
The title of the show is America's Next Top Model after all. I think it'd be great if America actually had some influence on who won the competition. This would also add some much needed life to the competition, which for the first time has started to show signs of age with me.

Secondly, I wasn't all that impressed with the finalists save Jenah, and I was pretty confident that she wasn't going to win this thing.
Although she was distractingly stunning in her photos, her sarcastic personality was equally as distracting to the judges and their comments paid notice to this all season. There was no way they were going to let her walk away with this thing - which I find bizarre considering Tyra said that she "took photos that rivaled models working today."
That left us with Tootie from The Facts of Life and Chantal from Austin, TX. While they are both beautiful in their own rights, I found both their personalities and their looks to be too safe and too blasé. I found it difficult rooting for either of these two because I just don't see anything extraordinarily unique about them.
With those two points in mind, I went into this finale prepared to be unimpressed, and with the exception of a chuckle here and there, I got what I was expecting.
Am I way off base here? If you disagree I'd really like to hear why in the comments.
As far as the episode goes, it was pretty standard fare. The most interesting thing occurred during the elimination when Jenah was sent home. Tyra asked the girls, "Who has the most potential and who has the least." All of the girls did the obvious thing and selected themselves as having the most potential.
I drew up a little illustration of what happened when Saleisha and Chantal answered the "who has the least potential" portion of the question:
It's always brutal watching these girls that have become "such good friends" verbally slice each other's throats open the second Tyra tosses this question out at the end of each cycle. Jenah took it extra hard which led to a short psychotherapy session where she broke down and Tyra did her best Oprah impression.
Sadly, Jenah went home and we moved on to a couture runway showdown between Saleisha and Chantal, only before the showdown took place we got to witness a ridiculously long sequence where Tyra slowly walked down the runway and took a seat atop a throne to watch the show. It was completely over the top, but I wouldn't expect any less from queen Tyra.
The highlight of the actual show arrived when Chantal walked down the runway sporting an incredibly long train and it caused one of the men on stilts to fall and bust his knee on the concrete. Chantal broke character for a split second and I think this caused Chantal to lose her concentration. She really looked stiffed most of the time and lacked confidence.
On the other hand, Saleisha had a strong runway presence and she just appeared to be having a much better time than Chantal. There wasn't much to anticipate during this finale. It was pretty evident who was going to win.
And shortly afterwards Tyra crowned her protégé the cycle 9 winner of America's Next Top Model. No frills and very few thrills.
Of course, as down as I am on this finale, I'll be the first one setting a season pass on my TiVo when cycle 10 is on the verge of starting. I just hope Tyra and company make an effort to step up their game.
See you all in a few months.

But on the bright side - no more Jaslene's My Life as a Covergirl spots.

I have to admit that I assumed Tyra wouldn't crown S queen, considering her T-Zone affiliation. However, re-considering the evilness of Bianca and Jaslene's lack of stage presence, S looks the best for cheesy CW & CG shots -

I know this is nitpicking, but isn't it a little tacky to have the illustration of having someone hit by a bus, when a young TV Squad blogger got killed recently by being hit by a bus? I don't know, it just seems a little thoughtless. And yes, I may be too sensitive, I just lost my husband last week, so my nerves and feelings are right on my sleeve. So, maybe it is just me.
But I think the girl that won was cute and good luck to her. The others will have careers, too, no doubt.

I agree with your blog all the way for this one! I mean they call the show "Americas" top model, then let us have a say! You are spot on when you said the Cover Girl of the Week was merely a pat on the back.
Give me a break! I was so upset about Heather I didnt even watch the last show all the way. It was so bad.
I thought it was so transparent when Saleisha was picked "second" to be in the finals. As if they had to really decide between the two. We all knew that Tyra was picking her. Another plus for her when she has her next group of T-Zone girls at camp she can add this in her brochures.
What a joke!

This was the worst ending ever. Salesha is a like a teachers pet. She is nice in front of the panel-but a real snot when they are not looking. Just what we need for a Cover Girl. "Now in 'mean girl' shades!" Ha-ha
Plus why on earth would you ever have a question about who is the best and who is the worst? What does this have to do with anything??? It was CRUEL!
Tyra needs to get a personality adjustment and take a big step down from her "I am God,Rosa Parks, the top super model of the world, and Oprah all rolled up in one"

I couldn't agree more that the final two should have been Heather and Jenah, with Jenah just edging out Heather for the win. From what I recall, there was only one incident where Jenah's personality got in the way of her work - the shoot with Nigel. I chalk that up to two things:
1. Yes, she gets a little too sarcastic with people she thinks she knows. I think this is just an issue of insecurity and immaturity (in the sense of not understanding how others perceive you). I had the exact same problem when I was her age.
2. Nerves. Add all these factors up - it's a competition, you've been away from home for a long time, you're in a foreign country where the food is nasty and good toilets are hard to come by (yes, I've been to China), one of the judges is shooting you, AND that photographer/judge is an incredibly sexy man. I'm surprised more of the young girls weren't awkward during that shoot.
But other than that one incident, we didn't see a case of her personality affecting her work. They said that she acted like she "thought she was above the CG commercial." I didn't see that at all. I saw someone who seemed kinda normal - a girlfriend telling me about a new product instead of a model with empty space where her brain should be. I thought the end where she bit the fruit was goofy, not snarky. I thought she actually let her guard down quite a bit in that commercial - and she got stomped on for doing so.
Was there anything Chantal could have done about that dude stepping on her dress? She didn't put it under his foot. And she was jerked backwards when he stepped on it. OK, so technically, she shouldn't have put her hand to her mouth. But she had to look behind her to make sure the dress wasn't caught on something and would rip when she kept going. But then, yes, she was rattled for the rest of the show. I don't think either girl would have recovered from that. It would be interesting to know if Tootie would have still won if the same thing had happened to her. I bet should would have.

before Chantal tripped up the stilt walker, her runway was still a mess. she was stiff and lifeless. she was horrible.
also, Jenah could never be a top model. she is going to be a model, and a great one, but a top model, not with that attitude. sure she is the everygirl, but top models are people you aspire to be, and everyone i know is as about as sarcastic and Jenah was. that is why she could never win.
in any case, i pegged Saleisha to win from the start. i doubt that she is fake. who can be fake for that long and under all of those conditions? even Jenah broke her sarcastic shtick. be that as it may, the season finale was boring. after the runway was over, i had to think for a second, "what just happened? that was it?"

Saleisha's win was a foregone conclusion, and although it may seem a bit fixed, it's probably a sound decision for a number of reasons. For one thing, it's been three cycles since the show has had an African American winner (Dani), but only two since a willowy, potentially unstable Caucasian blonde won (Caridee). Tyra knows her audience; I'm sure she has people working overtime, scouting potential Asian and Plus-Size winners who can be guided through the system. Also, the African-American and Latino communities have a far better record of actually supporting their winners; anyone seen Nicole lately?
Credibility is also a concern. For the show to continue to be viable, it needs to produce winners who enjoy visible careers beyond the My Life as a Cover Girl spots. Right now, the most successful models to come out of ANTM didn't actually *win* -- see Elyse, Yaya, Mollie Sue, etc. -- and victory seems to hurt the winners more than it helps them. Jenah was as much of a loose cannon as Caridee, and Chantal, while a lovely young woman and far more genuine than Saleisha, seemed a bit naive. I don't think there was another option.

I totally agree, JJ, this finale was boring and I could not believe Saleisha "helmut hair" won. Chantal is so much prettier than Saleisha and she was always nice, unlike the two faced Saleisha.
It seems that the way these girls walk on the finale is more important than all the pictures they take all year as Chantal took much better photos all season.
I'm really not sure if I will continue to watch this show after two cycles of let downs with the winners....

I really wish that Tyra would specify that you can't pick yourself in that "who should be top model" question. It would be nice to hear which of the other two contestants the girls think has the most potential. Obviously everyone is routing for themselves to win, so having them pick themselves means absolutely nothing.

Two points:
1. Heather took great pictures but couldn't strut to save her soul.
2. It's not like Saleisha picked that hairdo. Tyra did. If anything, Saleisha had to work to overcome it. And ugly as it was, unlike past contestants, she didn't whine about it.
For me the season was just blah and I don't think it'll get better. How many photogenic, neurotic, 5'10", 102 pound, ego manics can there actually be in the U.S?

Maybe I'm just not in "the know" but the last runway competition was just pathetic. Yes the Forbidden City is an amazing place, China is the "it" spot with the next Olympics bearing down. But it all just seemed so gray, so bland. Really the best finale this show has done was cycle 6 in Thailand.

Here's how boring the finale was: I wasn't able to watch it so I asked my usual watching companion to text msg me all the updates. I got three messages. 1.) Jenah is gone 2.) Chantel tripped somebody 3.) Saliesha won
This season was pretty boring. They are bringing in a new judge next season, so hopefully she'll be more involved with the contestants like Janice was (and Tyra used to be!). I think that the judges need to be more integrated with the girls during the competition instead of just judging pictures. The best episodes are always the one that Nigel is the photographer because you get a taste of what goes on.
I also personally would like to see more of the "technical" aspects of being a model. Is it really just sit in a chair while someone does your hair and makeup and then try to look pretty for a picture?

This was by far the worst season finale of ANTM. I didn't want Jaslene, Niama, or Caridee (to name just a few) to win. I always believed the second runner up would have made a much better model and Cover Girl. This season, neither two girls did anything for me. Lisa was my pick, Heather second, and Jenah third.
Caridee asked Nigel if he was going to pull the stick out of this ass and then she wins. Where as Jenah was actually charming and cute when being sarcastic and she didn't make the top two. Here's a big fat WHATEVER!
I really liked Jenah's laid back personality, she was cute, and approachable. The other two are overall like cacti! This season didn't completely suck but the season finale sure did!!

George-right on on your comments. I agree with everything you said. I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one, as indicated from your comments, but for a while I did think I was the only one who noticed the rotation between ethnicities (msp?!) in the ANTM cycles. After Lisa was dismissed, I knew it would be down to a white girl, yes Chantal, and a black girl, anyone but Bianca.
And it was by far the most disappointing finale because it was evident who was going to win not to mention, yes George, THE MOST REASONABLE DECISION.

I will say, the person whom I've wanted to win has never won, they've always come in as runner up.. but after heather was kicked, jenah was the only hope. and with her being kicked, i honestly didn't care who won between helmet head and ditzy blonde..
