(S04E10) "Dr. Hahn. Shut-up." - Meredith
The final pre-strike episode of Grey's Anatomy. Well... technically, there's one more that's been shot (the infamous Bailey narrated episode), but who knows when that'll air. January if we're lucky. Maybe February. Anyway, I liked this one a lot. It definitely made up for last week's mediocre first half. It was hectic and tense despite the fact that you could see most of it coming a mile away. Fortunately, so many things came together... actually, I should say "fell apart."
Yes, fell apart. Just about every major relationship in this show finally hit the wall. Not that it really comes as a surprise. The entire hospital was in chaos! All the OR rooms were booked, the ambulance crash was still being dealt with, and Sloan and Hahn and everyone else got endless pages and constantly had to move from one patient to the next never fully having the chance to devote themselves to one surgery. It's a wonder that Nick (Seth Green was really good) was the only one that died. Alright, so let's break it down.
Meredith and Derek
It seems like they're pretty much done... and the best part of it? Meredith doesn't even know it yet. She thinks she's finally laid her claim on Derek after realizing that she had something to lose. Well... too late. She lost it to someone who in the short time we've met her seems (in my opinion) better looking, funnier, smarter, and much more like Derek's type. I'm all for the Derek/Rose thing if only because it's something different. Granted, I could be speaking too soon since I suppose he could give Meredith a bit of a chance to see if she's actually serious. I hope not though because that kiss between Derek and Rose was a great moment in this show if you ask me.
Look at it this way though. Derek and Meredith were apart most of this episode anyway. Meredith really made an impression on the Chief by handling herself so well with Ray the paramedic and it was great to see her tell off Hahn like that. For once she wasn't whiny, so maybe she is changing. I gotta tell you though. When she had to inject that GIANT needle into Ray's chest... I was not expecting a good outcome.
Derek had a positive experience too. So maybe that gave them both some sort of confidence. Meredith, knowing that Derek is the only one for her and Derek knowing that there are other fish in the sea. Like Rose, with her three semesters of computer science at Santa Cruz. I will say that was a bit much. A computer just sitting there unmoved has tons of "wires" that are loose? Come on. Regardless, it was defining moment because let's be honest - Meredith would have never been able to do that and Rose wowed Derek with her knowledge.
Miranda and Tucker
This was a long time coming even though we've heard so little about it. Bailey is never home. Tucker is essentially a single parent if you think about it. That being said, he's being completely unfair. He knew what he was getting when he married her and now that it's real for him, he's going to walk out. Not cool and I'm glad Bailey knows that too. Her whole spiel about vows and what not was good stuff.
It was ridiculous to have George running back and forth between them like some sort of dually hired divorce attorney though. To be honest, I would have loved to see Tucker barge into the OR and actually have words with his wife. Seeing those two spar verbally would be fun to see.
Random observation. I thought she was going to stitch up Nazi Paramedic so that his swastika was no longer recognizable, right? When George was suturing his wound, maybe it's me, but there wasn't much distortion there.
George and Izzie
And speaking of George, how great was it when he threw it all right back at the Nazi paramedic? All the "world would be a better place if he were dead" talk. Oh, snap! I can imagine TR Knight saying the exact same thing to a certain former cast member.
As far as iGeorge goes... ugh. What's with this "someday" business? I thought this was over! Hopefully, now that Izzie has it in her mind that she needs to develop her compassionate side (because she'll never be Hahn or Cristina) she'll make more time for work and less time for George. Makes me wanna shove knitting needles in my eyes.
Alex and Ava/Rebecca
The end of an awkward era. I'm so glad Alex finally got some sense... sort of. Not only did Ava/Rebecca's presence in the gallery get him suspended for a week, but he still slept with her. Yeah, he's sleazy, but he made good sense when he yelled at her. She's trying to live a lie. Rebecca has a kid and husband at home. Ava just wants to get screwed by Alex. He had the sense to say it. "You're not here to talk." I'm not sure where this leaves him and Lexie, but I think it's safe to say that Ava/Rebecca is gone for good.

I know there was a lot of debate about Cristina's comment regarding her step-father's Jewish parents from last week. Well I think we got some clarity on it in this episode when she told Bailey how offended she was and what an abuse of power it was to pull Cristina from Hahn's service to work on Nazi paramedic. Bailey did it simply to spite the guy because she's Asian and as a result, Cristina thought it hindered her learning from Hahn... which it did. My point is this. Whether she actually feels something for her step-grandparents and the tragedy they encountered or not, is irrelevant. She still used that comment simply to get back to Hahn because she felt as though her education was suffering. When it come to that stuff, Cristina is no holds barred and she'll say or do anything to get the surgeries she wants. She's always been like that.
-
Remember how this two-parter started? Cristina and Meredith dancing as Izzie watched, jealous. How did it end? Izzie finally got invited to the dance. One... two... three... say, "awwwww."
-
As I mentioned earlier, Seth Green was great, but let's be honest. You knew he was going to die. Lexie hadn't gone through her "coming of age" moment yet. The second she became attached to Nick, you knew he was a goner. She needed to have that "we killed him" moment and she got it. I found it odd to see Cristina of all people being the one trying to cheer Lexie up though.
-
I love how Cristina's interns are so beat down, that even they refer to themselves as the number Yang assigned to them.
-
Sloan looking at Ava/Rebecca and and saying "I built that face!" is hilarious.
Then there was the ending... the day was hectic, all the doctors ran around like crazy, and patients died. So what'd everyone do? Get drunk. Sloan, Hahn, and Callie hit up Joe's and Izzie, George, Yang, Meredith, and Lexie got hammered and danced the night away. Sometimes you need that. You get plastered and you forget things. This day had plenty that I'm sure all of them would like to forget. Maybe when the show comes back, we'll see a fresh start. Until Meredith sees Derek kissing Rose...

It was basically a box-letter "S" at that point. Looks weird, and hard to make up a good story, but a symbol of hate no longer. Too bad the hate is still there. :\
And Meredith too nice?! She's got to be the most selfish, rude "lead" character on TV today. Ugh. Thank God for Bailey and the Chief and Alex and Seth Green guest starring roles, because at times this show is unbearable. I blame my friend for getting me hooked on this show, which is like crack! :P

Why wouldn't Meredith have been able to fix a computer? Because rose had three semester's worth of knowledge? Seriously? Please. That makes absolutely no sense.
About as much as your continued argument about Cristina and her Jewishness. You keep saying she used the comment to get back to Hahn, but the problem with that is that Cristina didn't go back with Hahn. And it wasn't like Bailey was forcing her to be there either. So it means she stayed with Bailey and helped out by choice, because she felt that Bailey needed her. That was clearly her impression when Bailey casually waved her out of surgery tonight and said she didn't need her. That's where Cristina snapped and got offended, because here she was under the impression that she was actually needed whether for Bailey's support or for her abilities, and turns out Bailey just used her.
Like I said last week, if Cristina was intent on being as cold blooded as we all know her to be, then why did she stay on when she didn't need to? When no one was forcing her to stay? If she'd wanted out, she'd have had out, by using the Jewish issue as her ticket. But she didn't. Your argument fails there once again. Either she's being coldblooded with the situation or she's not. She can't be using the situation and still staying on. Not when it could have so easily gotten her out of there if she'd wanted.

i just finished medical internship this year. grey's anatomy writers really captured our lives perfectly. i understand cristina's feelings. it may be hard to understand if you're not in the medical field but it totally makes sense to us. for us, if we want something, we have to impress our seniors and work hard and be pushy. if we want to just idle around, we try our best to be as invisible as possible which is oftentimes, unsuccessful because we still get ordered around anyways. when we are given orders, no matter how much you hate doing it and no matter how unreasonable or insane it is (unless it involves harming the patients), we have no choice. seniority rules... that's how strong the hospital heirarchy can be. it's kinda like an unspoken rule that you can't question your seniors. what you like to do doesn't matter.

cristina probably stayed because there would be no point at all going back to hahn's surgery which would have started by then anyways. besides, any intern would feel the same way. you're being ordered around all the time and you can't complain. so when you're ordered to do something instead of being in a surgery that you really want, but ending up having nothing to do after all, you'd feel the same way. you would want so much to be useful. most of my colleagues would call it obsession or arrogance. especially in the surgical field where you find the most arrogant doctors in the hospital. knowing cristina's character, she's probably just being her obssessive and arrogant self. but you can't ignore the fact that once in a while, you get wrapped up in something that is really out of your character, especially in frustrating situations like that.

Dare I suggest that George & Izzie are exactly where their relationship needs to be? More dancing, more being there for each other, more growing together as people and less pressure to be perfect in bed together. After all, look at where being perfect in bed together has gotten Meredith & Derek, Christina & Burke, Sloane and almost every woman in the hospital.

I hated that Izzie danced with them at the end. She didn't deserve to be invited to their dancing party. Too bad Meredith is such a nice person that she associates with selfish psychos like Izzie and George.

LMAO. Isn't Mer the selfish one that is whiny, self-involved and only cares about herself, etc.? I'm pretty sure selfish people don't care about things such as (George about Bailey's) marriage & (Izzie about her patients') feelings. Again, could be wrong, but didn't Izzie get lectured for basically spending too much time on her patients?
Also, I think the term "Oh snap," should be be retired our daily lexicon along with the word "seriously."

Regarding Dr. Hahn's comment to Izzy about taking time out to give the mom and children info on their father's surgery status. Dr. Hahn states that if Izzy wants to be a social worker the training is 2 years versus 12 years for a surgent. While I know that the show is purely for entertainment it is just annoying when the writers get something like this so wrong. The "training" for a medical social worker is a total of 8 years (4 undergrad, 2 grad, a minimum of 2 years post-grad supervised work - it is a set number of hours in no less than a 2 year period, multiple continuing education units required all leading up to a national exam for state licensure). At very least a medical social worker will have 6 years of combined academics and field training and complete there additional 2 year minimal supervised training as a medical social worker before taking the national exam.
I know the show is meant for entertainment purposes and the "2 years" versus "12 years" of training comment was simply meant as a shock value line but just so very very inaccurate. The writers should either find a different profession to pick on or get their information right. 2 years is very different from 8 years of training.

In response to nish:
First, I think Hahn just said social worker, not medical social worker.
Second, is there any reason to assume the Hahn would know anything about the educational process of any type of social work?
That line had nothing to do with the writers picking on the profession. Hahn was impatient with Izzie's desire to attend to the family. What other profession would she 'pick on' to make her point?
Sometimes people just say things in a moment, don't they?

Is it not possible that she meant the two years post graduate study for social work as opposed to the twelve years post graduate study to be a surgeon? Especially when considering a heart surgeon. I took the comment at face value, people just say stuff in the moment, but it is completely possibly that the comment is a lot more accurate than what you took it to be.

Thank You for that. I was so upset when Hahn said that. I am a social worker and thus far I have spent 6 and 1/2 years in school. I am a huge fan of the show, but I am very offended by what was said. Not only that, but I think Izzy is on to something. In my opinion a doctor that actually takes time and has some compassion for the patient and thier family is a good doctor.

it was indeed an erroneous comment. being a surgeon would take more than 12 years (4 years undergrad, 4 years medicine proper - plus 1 year postgrad internship for some countries, 5 years residency, 3-4 years fellowship training - plus a couple more years if you want to go all the way and get a subspecialty)

I know that everyone loves to hate Meredith, but it's the Mer-Der relationship that keeps a lot of people watching, and keeps the writers in good stories. And really, people, it's not that bad. If you let it grow, it might just become entertaining. *Might* being the operative word, but still.
Poor George. He gets pulled in by Bailey just like Cristina, and hardly gets his hands bloody. Instead, he gets to play "Telephone" with his mentor and her angry, intimidating, abandoning husband. Sweet deal, Bambi. Oh, and for the person that said Tucker knew what he was getting into when he married Bailey, SO not true. He married her after college, before med school. And even at that - it's marriage. You never know exactly what you're getting into. You may not like it, you may have to adapt, or you may leave. But you can never say you knew exactly what you were getting into. Still, good storyline, I'm sad that we're probably only going to get one more episode of it. The most redeeming part was George's "Oh, Snap!" at the end. Priceless.
I like the various relationships (i.e. friendships) that are developing within the hospital. It makes it more of an ensemble and less of a clique. And who knew that Alex was going to be the wise one? I was rather impressed.
Very well tied up for a lackluster beginning.

"oh Snap" Seriously....
Overall... I thought this was a pretty decent episode. I loved the end where they invited Izzie to dance. That was great. Afterall... the only people they have are each other... even Lexie...
LOVED the Derick/Rose thing. I always thought this show was better when Mer and Der were apart.
Oh SNAP.

I think MerDer has seen an end for now. Even Patrick Dempsey said in an interview that he's tired of the back & forth. He's ready for his character to either "fish or cut bait". I think the whole thing is getting as bad as iGeorge. I want to see Derek with Rose and Merideth needs to spend some time finding herself and working on her relationship with Lexie!

Casting Mistake: Why wasn't Seth Green cast as one of the new interns along with Chyler Leigh? He was superb in these two episodes and it seems like such a shame to have him off of the show already. Why does the network/producers/casting avoid such great possibilities (i.e., Mare Winningham, Seth Green, Loretta Devine, and more)? I can't wrap my brain around it. And when do we get to see a little more of what Dr. Hahn is all about personally? I'm getting anxious.
