(S15E10) Now, you can tell this episode of Survivor China is yet another one named for a James saying. He seems to have an Adam and Eve obsession, as well as a fixation on the apple.I realize he's hungry and I'm not all that sure apples are indigenous to China. He could nibble on some bamboo. After all, that keeps those cool panda bears looking all that fat and healthy.
Maybe I'd call this episode, "We Don't Need No Steenkin' Apples, Give Us Bamboo!" Yeah, that's it.
Due to last week's clip/rerun/recap episode, we've been hanging for two weeks with unfinished business at Tribal Council. Would someone else go home? Would Jeff declare himself the winner and send them all home? Nope. Nothing of the sort.
Jeff dismissed the jury and told the rest that they'd be playing for a special reward. The winner and two others of his or her choice would travel by private jet to a 1500 year-old Shaolin Temple. And, indeed, grasshoppers, this is where the martial art kung fu originated.The Rewards Challenge consisted of questions about China's history. As always, I thought it was Jeopardy and called out my answers in the form of a question from my sofa. I was surprised that I got most of them right, but was certainly guessing on a few. As were the castaways, I might add.
Peih-Gee won the reward and chose Erik (naturally, her only surviving Zhan Hu partner) and, surprisingly enough, Denise. I'm not sure if Peih-Gee knew how great it was for Denise.First off, Denise has been studying karate for years and has a huge interest in martial arts. Also, she has been having a feeling of being odd man out as of late. She's been the last picked or nearly last in every schoolyard pick of the game. She hasn't always been informed what's going on with her own tribe mates and, let's face it, she's a middle-aged sort of chunky woman with a mullet and a strong Massachusetts accent.
She's kind of like a female version of Boston Rob wearing a mullet haircut and not anywhere near as clever or sneaky at the game. Okay, maybe it's just the accent. But I bet Boston Rob wore a mullet at sometime in his life. He just seems the type.
The four who didn't go on the trip -- Courtney, James, Amanda, and Todd -- thought it would mean more relaxing and more food for themselves with the three out of the way. Of course, they conspired. You can't split up the tribe and have any groups of two or more without conspiring at this point.
But the true feast went on at the temple. I personally found it all kinds of fascinating on so many levels. I can't imagine what it would be like to be there in person. The architecture of the temple was stunning. The monks playing music, the interest they showed in their American visitors ... the group of small children giving them lessons after the main demonstration.
They even let Denise give the entire group a demonstration of her expertise. Before you knew it, everybody was kung fu fighting. Man, those cats were as fast as lightning. (Oh, you know I had to fit that in somewhere here, right?)After the demonstrations were all over, the three lucky reward recipients had a meal which couldn't be beat. Chinese food, yes. But certainly not of the ilk from the take-out down the block from me! Then they settled down for a great restful sleep on mats, much better than what their fellow tribe mates had. Peih-Gee said she was in her happy place.
What did the others have? Pouring rain that just wouldn't quit, forcing them to huddle in the cave which is just about big enough for two people, but not four or more.
When the reward party returned, they all jammed towards the cave after only Amanda emerged to welcome them back. That irked Courtney. You see, the cave is her personal happy place. But it's not a happy place when others are in it. How dare they seek her shelter and talk about the reward!
As I figured, Denise is wavering a bit on how she should play. Being very careful not to alienate Peih-Gee and Erik, she had nodded a lot but didn't commit to anything as Peih-Gee tried to swing her their way. Upon returning, she told Todd they worked on her and that Peih-Gee thinks they should target Todd himself. I think Denise wants to stay with whatever side will tip the scales in the voting game at Tribal Council.
Amanda had her own plan which didn't stick with the Fei Long strategy. She took Courtney along to get the tree mail about the Immunity Challenge. While there, she discussed targeting James instead of Peih-Gee or Erik. If they can blindside him and make him feel he's safe, she's sure he won't use the hidden immunity idols even though he has both of them. He also thinks he's running the show and is all that and a bag of chips.
If James read the tree mail, it had a forewarning which could apply to him -- "arrogance breeds complacency." Aha! He's been arrogant, especially since holding the idols. He thinks no one can survive without him and has been acting the part of big boss man. I liked him in the beginning, but he's been way too smug and controlling the past few weeks.
The Immunity Challenge itself also incorporated kung fu -- this time the kung fu throwing stars. Each person had three times to hit a target of three figures with different points awarded for certain areas of the target. The top three, or four as it turned into a four-way tie, had a sudden death showdown with the best of one toss of a star.Courtney actually ended up amongst the four tied for the second round. Peih-Gee, Erik, and James were the other three. But it was dead-eye southpaw Erik who brought it all home, winning immunity for a second ex-Zhan Hu win in a row.
But, he might be nibbling on his own apple even though James doesn't want his people to bite the apple which is Erik and Peih-Gee. Erik doesn't have the alliance to Peih-Gee that she has to him, I don't think. I believe he's more willing to go in alone with the Fei Long than she is. She wants him with her.
And, it looks like Peih-Gee is a goner, right?
Nope. Amanda put her plan in motion -- the James blindside shuffle. When Peih-Gee rather timidly approached Amanda about James having the idols and it might be a good time to force them into play or get rid of James, Amanda jumped on it. "Let everyone think you're going home. We need him to feel comfortable enough not to use the idol."
Amanda told Erik, but Erik didn't have as much faith in the plan as she did. But Peih-Gee really had nothing to lose. They both discussed voting for Todd so it could be win-win for them. If Courtney, Amanda, Denise, and Todd all voted for James, James for Peih-Gee, and they voted for Todd -- they'd be covered. If James saved himself, Todd would go.James told us in confessional that if he felt the least bit worried that something was going to go wrong, he'd save himself with an idol before the votes were tallied.
He should have taken his own advice. He looked like he felt a bit hinky as Jeff asked his Probsting questions at Tribal Council. But did he get a clue?
Nuh-uh.
James voted for Peih-Gee, Peih-Gee voted for Todd, and everyone else voted for James to go.
The looks on all of their faces, including the jury, was priceless. It was all they could do to keep from laughing out loud. Todd even pulled his hat over his face. But, in the end, James told us he got too sure of his position and it was his own fault he was voted out. He told us that as he shook the two immunity idols at the camera. He said the others were playing the game and I thought his reaction was as it should be. Todd had thought he might get killed. He may, but not by James and probably not over Survivor China.
They have nine days to go and I'm going to be very interested in seeing how the dynamics change.

The guy has 2 immunity idols and doesn't play one of them. If he used one now there would only be 6 people left and he still would have had 1, so he he would have been assured at least top 5 and you would think that in one of those weeks he would have won immunity so he probably would have gotten to top 4, so not playing 1 of the 2 immunities was incredibly dumb. In fact I would say it is one of the stupidest moves in Survivor History.
Although P-G seems wacky/annoying she has actually had 2-3 smart plans throughout the game, the first one which i still believe was smart initially was throwing the 2 competitions to get rid of the 2 members of the other tribe who came to their tribe, James and Aaron. The only reason that went wrong was because they got spooked and only got rid of 1 member,Aaron, otherwise the merge would have been an even number plus 2 of the strongest players would be gone. The second plan of voting for Todd just in case James used the idol was also very smart. She made sure that she didn't vote for James as well leaving herself helpless. She has actually done several smart moves, taking Denise on the trip was also I believe a smart move. And she is top 6, so good for her. If she makes it to the finals she deserves the money, even though she can be annoying sometimes.

Wow. I must admit, I liked James at the beginning and was still supporting him when he got arrogant, but by the sheer stupidity of his actions I do not feel sorry for him. James got way too cocky and too trustworthy in his position. If James was smart, he could've used the influence of the hidden immunity idols to create a smaller alliance and plow their way to control (PG and Denise would've been ideal a few weeks ago). I hope he learns from his mistake if he goes to Survivor All-Stars 2.
As for the state of the tribe now, it looks like there could be a power struggle between Todd and Amanda.

Courtney annoyed the crap out of me tonight - as usual - with her whole "don't come to my happy place and talk about the reward" garbage. The only reason Pieh Gee and the rest who went on the reward went to the cave was because that's where the group was, and the only reason they talked about the reward was because they were asked.
Todd has also been annoying me of late. he thinks he's such a great player but he wasn't going to move against James even in this episode until he saw his precious alliance structure crumbling. the proper play - as I've said several times before - would have been to ditch the mostly likable James and keep the thoroughly unlikable Jean Robert, taking James out early.
And yes, James annoyed me too. The arrogance born out of having both immunity idols was part of it, but so was his seemingly baseless hatred for Pieh Gee, and his attitude towards Denise. The big thing was that he couldn't believe that anyone would want to get rid of him even though he was the biggest physical threat of any of them for when the challenges start turning back to endurance.
I'm really starting to like Amanda. She's stopped being Todd's little puppet and is thinking - and more importantly acting - in her own best interests.

But seriously, I can't believe Amanda told PG the real plan. PG could have easily told James and he could have been ready with the idols. Amanda should have just lied and not taken the risk.

James was a fool not to use one of his idols and a bigger fool when almost every person said NO ONE is to be trusted. It was as if he wasn't listening to what they were saying, didn't care what they were saying or was to stupid to understand what they were saying.
This was the biggest blunder I have ever seen on Survivor and he got what he deserve.

Todd is running the game. I thought Amanda was ready to do a teriffic strategic move and get rid of him, but she missed her chance. All she had to do was have Erik and P-G vote for Todd, the rest of them vote for James, and then tell James to make sure he played an idol. She would have gotten rid of Todd without making it look like she did. She could have taken his place as the leader without losing the goodwill she has with him.

I think Amanda did the right thing by back dooring James and keeping Todd around. Everyone knows Todd is running the game and I think it's too soon for her to try to make a power play against him. Let him run the show for a few more days and then strike. I think she needs to get PG and Denise on her side. If she can go to the final 3 with them, she's almost guaranteed a win!

These older women align themselves with the schemingest (that isn't a word, but it works here) guy and always, always get screwed in the end! She can totally change up the game but wont - because she has some sick sense of loyalty to a person that doesn't give a rat's ass about her. Same thing happened when the used car salesman won Survivor - He had that stupid Marine chick in his pocket - she had the opportunity to change the game and didn't, then was voted out the at very next opportunity. She even admitted that she made a mistake. Duh! Don't these people watch the show. There are only so many ways one can get screwed over, so naturally you would think they would choose a different path than their predecessors. This season can be described in two words: Boring Predictable

James made a mistake by not playing an idol, but he would have never been blindsided like that if he would have done the right thing. Todd found the idol, and let James take it to the other tribe to save himself, he didn't need to use it and in the process got the other idol. He should have given the one back to Todd, then there would have been a balance of power between him and Todd, and the peace within the group of 5 would have held until Pieh Gee and Erik were gone.

The Lowdown from My Perspective:
Though many of you made some really good points, James' problem, from my perspective, was not only his cockiness, but the fact that he trusted those white people !
Everyone knows Survivor history: Blacks on the show are usually kicked off first -- often for no reason at all. Or, usually they are kept only for their brawn and then kicked off when it suits the others. And it doesn't matter if they kick the "laziness" tag they are often given by being the tribe's workhorse or not. On general principle, he definitely should've used at least one of those idols -- knowing he's the only black one left.
The looks on their faces after James' ouster was indeed priceless. It showed every one of their masks. Fake. And they were happy to see him going -- knowing they would never give a brotha a chance to get $1 million over them. It's the truth and the bottom line.
And you could argue about last year's winner Earl, all you want. But he won because he strategized the entire time while staying under the radar. But don't think for a minute that he wasn't targeted first. And at the rate they're going, he'll probably be the last black to win.
Don't you be fooled -- Race is always a factor.

Poor James, drop the racial aspect... James was booted because he was (1) likeable and hense voteable, (2) a strong threat with his immunity idols, and (3) getting cocky.
Another thing- Todd is NNNOOOTTT running the show like some of you have said. He has delusions of such grandeur, but he is an idiot who will NOT make it to the final four. If he does you can all come back on here and call me the idiot.

courtney i can't stand (and she's caucasian, too) i think people will keep her around, believing that can win against her in the end, but i just can't stand looking at her see thru body anymore !! i want her to do something stupid, so they all band against her & vote her bony you know what, out !!!
i'm really loving the china setting - the scenery is wonderful, the places they've gone on for challenge wins have been awesome & it almost looks like china could win agains MN for their 10,000 lakes - there seems to be a lot of waterways in china
