MTV may be eyeing a Rock Band TV show

MTVHarmonix brought us Guitar Hero and it was good. MTV bought Harmonix and promised more musical delights in the near future and now there is Rock Band. Where GH allowed you to rock the axe, RB expands to allow the entire "band." Peripherals are available to allow a guitarist, bassist, drummer and vocalist to all perform together. And major record labels are promising unprecedented cooperation, including making new music available weekly for the game.

Now, Rocky Mountain News is reporting that a Rock Band TV show may be under consideration at MTV. While nothing official can be reported, MTV senior VP of home entertainment Paul DeGooyer says of it, "we need the right concept, one that looks at how gamers engage with the game." Implications may be, though, that they are trying to find a way to do it without diluting or damaging the Rock Band name.

With major label and musician support and that planned rollout of new jams each week, including an exclusive premiere of Metallica's next single, Rock Band looks poised to be a major player in the music industry. It may just change it in the same way MTV itself did lo those many moons ago. If it proves anywhere near as popular as Guitar Hero, which seems pretty likely, then it will definitely have the attention of all those young people that have stopped buying CDs in favor of downloads and ring tones. And if tapping into the huge video game market is what it takes for the music industry to hang onto the youth market, then it's a savvy move.

My fear is that foursomes who jam the Rock Band will delude themselves into thinking they have real talent and try to force feed the rest of us their tone deaf crapilations. And you can bet your ass they'll all be recording themselves and plastering it all over YouTube to try and be the next viral ("Chocolate Rain") sensation. Me, I'm waiting for Barbershop Quartet for the Wii. I'm gonna get the boys back together and we are gonna bring the house down! Where's my bow tie? Where's my Ragtime Doll?
