(S03E09) "Christmas and skeletons do not go together." -- Both Max Keenan and Seeley Booth, but not at the same time.
No, this isn't a photo taken from a dream sequence of either Bones or Booth. It is actually Seeley and Temperance locking lips. The kiss was performed under duress and a bit of blackmail due to the puckish nature of Caroline Julian. So, it wasn't as intense as you would think their eventual first kiss would be.
Then again, Booth ended up with the gum Bones was chewing right before the kiss. So, maybe this was the kiss that would lead to the eventually blissful relationship of the FBI Agent and the forensic anthropologist.. Only time and several other successful season will tell.
After a pretty intense episode last week we were treated to a whimsical installment of Bones, which fit with the 'holiday magic' theme of this episode. Of course, Bones being Bones the magic began after finding a dead Santa in the sewer. They really had fun with the, ahem, myth of Santa in this episode as everything that they discovered about the dead jolly man pointed to the fact that he really was the true Santa Claus.
Everyone, including Bones and Zack, were getting into it. You wouldn't think that would be the case from two of the most analytical members of the Squint Squad. Yet, Zack was starting to believe a bit when they found out that the guy's name was Kris Kringle and that he was kicked by a reindeer. And, Bones was like a little kid when she and Booth went to the Santa's apartment (above a toy store, no less) and saw all the cool, yet creepy, stuff this Santa had. Personally, I loved the holiday train set in the middle of the room.
Unfortunately, not everything was pure and innocent (and weird) about this Santa. Booth found a whole bunch of money hidden away in one of his dresser drawers. Now, this is where I got confused about the mystery...was it this particular Santa who was the pick pocket, or was it David DeLuise. I seemed to think that it was Kris, but it was implied that Mr. Kringle confronted the other Santa about his habits.
Either way, DeLuise's Santa was arrested for the murder of Kris. This didn't make the other temporary Santas happy at all. I don't believe I have ever heard a more menacing version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town before. I will always hear that song in a different light from now on. By the way, nice to see Reginald VelJohnson again. Even though he is know for his years as Carl Winslow on Family Matters he has been cast in a number of dramatic series.
Even though the Squints and Dr. Sweets (who is now named in the opening credits and said 'Was there tongue involved?' after Bones told him he and Booth kissed) were seen in this episode it was pretty much all Bones and Booth this week. They were both a bit miserable about the upcoming Christmas holiday, and not just because they found a dead Santa. Seeley was grumpy because his son was going to Vermont to spend the holiday with his mother, while Temperance was upset that she could not get her criminal family together for a Christmas celebration.
I think we all knew that things would turn out okay for our favorite non-couple because the heart of the show is, well, heart. Booth got to spend Christmas day with his son after Parker came to find him and, thanks to the mistletoe kiss, Bones got her family together. I really enjoyed the musical montage showing how everyone was celebrating the holiday. There were the festively-dressed Squints smiling and hugging and passing around gifts, followed by Max looking at a barren trailer interior, followed by a very sad Booth. As the music continued the scenes switched and, all of a sudden, Max and Russ were being festive, and Seeley was reunited with his son. It was very heartwarming.
And, I'll admit it, I teared up a bit when Booth appeared outside with a Christmas tree.
That will be it for Bones this year. When I talk to you next it will be on, I believe, Friday, January 4th. This will be the new day for the show due to scheduler killer American Idol. If this pisses you off please contact FOX and tell them what an idiotic move they are making. Until then, have a good holiday.

I can avoid the text on the main page. I can't avoid the images. So why use images that are spoilers? You KNOW this annoys the crap out of people who read your site.

I love Bones, my favorite show I think.
I'm really glad they have Bones' family, in the beginning of the season they never showed them and that bugged me.
All the characters, both side and main, work great together, I love it. And Bones does Holiday episodes really well.

That's why he does it, to piss you off.
The kiss was in the previews, so get over yourself.

Dude... Once a show airs, its not a spoiler anymore. Furthermore, the kissed was teased last week in the "scenes from next week."
Nothing irritates me more than spoiler whiners AFTER an episode has aired...

I was confused about the money, too, but on another blog someone thought that Kris had all the small bills (including the crisp $50s) because the other Santas owed him money or something along those lines. So the bad guy was really David Deluise and Kris remained "pure".
So many fun things in this episode! Loved the kiss, the gum and the Christmas tree. I *really* loved Booth in that awesome trench coat and the cool glasses when they were outside the toy shop. How hot is he??? I had to stop Tivo and just stare for a while . This show is becoming "must watch" TV for me. There's enough humor to keep it light(ish), enough drama to keep you glued to the TV and that hint of romance is just perfect. Hope the writers' strike ends soon so that we can get more-more-more!

The second it's aired it's no longer a spoiler? What a stupid rule. It's still a spoiler to those who haven't watched the episode yet.
And I don't watch the previews, because they often idiotically ruin dramatic moments in the episode to come.

hey Graham-
It was in the previews-unless you live under a rock there was a chance you'd see it on Fox...so don't blame Richard

Graham, why don't you just avoid reading the posts about episodes you haven't seen yet? That's what I do. The TVSquad posts about Dexter episodes always show up before I have a chance to watch the episodes themselves, so I just scroll past without reading them. After I've watched the episodes, I go back and read the posts.
The whole point of the episode-specific TVSquad posts is to talk about eps that already aired, so I'm not sure why you'd want to read even the introductory paragraphs before watching.

The kiss was confusing to me. I thought it was a rather bland long kiss. I kept waiting for Caroline to say what a boring kiss and say they were hopeless. I certainly did not see enuf action to lead to any gum swapping.
I, too, teared up at the end. Such a sweet, perfect gesture to Bones from Seely. They really do love each other in a friendship way. I like the slow relationship growth between them.

I had a lot of confusion after the kiss. Not that the kiss itself was confusing, but I didn't get Caroline's reaction. Was she expecting them to drop trou and do it under the mistletoe? Burst into flames? What? I kept thinking about it, and I still don't get her reaction. Anyone?

@K31 and Dorv
this is hilarious imo. just because an episode has aired doesn't make it a spoiler free. thats like telling a kid santa isn't real!

I remember when the new King Kong came out and people got pissed off because someone said that King Kong dies at the end. The story, and the first movie, were 70 years old. Just because you didn't see it yet mean shit, it's 70 years old.
It was shown in the previews too.
And If I don't want any spoilers of any kind I just don't come to the site.

Everyone knows Santa isn't real, he died a long time ago and the Tooth Fairy had to take over.

Alison, I didn't read the opening paragraph. I saw that it was a Bones post, I began to scroll by, but I couldn't help but see the picture. That was the point of my post.
There's definitely a statue of limitations on spoilers - Rosebud was a sled, Darth Vader is Luke's dad, the Titanic sinks - but that statute of limitations doesn't run out the second something has aired. Millions of people use DVRs now and don't watch shows as their broadcast. It doesn't seem unreasonable to want to still avoid spoilers the next day.
But since most people seem to disagree (and since 'Christmas spirit' apparently means insulting strangers on the internet) I'll quit now.
I thought the episode was pretty good, and I like the idea of a cultish group of Santa Claus'.

Richard - I know the writers are on strike but come on, watch your grammar: "Everyone, including Bones and Zack, where getting into it." - Everyone WAS (you meant to say WERE, but even that's not correct) and Sweets 'Was their tongue involved?', Was THERE...if it was 'their' then tongue would be plural. I guess you guys get paid for these reviews, and I know you have to churn them out pretty quickly, but really, re-read! Don't let the written word become a lost art!
Okay, Bones - yes, very confusing about the money on the part of the writers. And why did Kris stop paying his rent? B&B - nice kiss but not the type to exchange gum. Liked that Angela and Hodgins were starting their own family traditions. Very warm and fuzzy ending. Sucks that there will be no Bones until 2008! Thanks for letting us know that it will be on Fridays in Jan.

The grammatical errors have been corrected. Sometimes these things slip through even with my review and the editor's review. If you see these again please make sure you enter them at http://www.tvsquad.com/contact/corrections/ and they will get to us quicker.
And, not to seem like a lame excuse, but I hope the move of Bones to Friday will give me a bit more time on these reviews than it did during my House/Bones review weeks.
